Area forecast discussion, Feb 19, 8:54 PM EST, 4 hours 5 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
854 PM EST Sat Feb 19 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
The strong cold front that pushed through our region this
afternoon is now off the coast. High pressure located in the
Middle Mississippi River Valley will follow. The center of the
high is forecast to pass off the Middle Atlantic Coast on Sunday
afternoon and it should continue to influence our weather into
Monday. Low pressure is expected to move across the Great Lakes
on Tuesday and down the Saint Lawrence River Valley on Tuesday
night. The low is anticipated to pull a cold front through our
region on Wednesday afternoon and evening. High pressure is
forecast to nose into our area from the northwest and north on
Thursday before another area low pressure moves northeastward
across our region on Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A cold front and associated snow squalls moved through our
region this afternoon. The wind shifted to the northwest after
the frontal passage with wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph. But over
the last hour or so, speeds have begun to diminish. It will
still be breezy at times, the next few hours, with winds gusting
into the 25 to 35 mph range, but gusts exceeding 45 mph are no
longer expected. As a result, the wind advisory has been
cancelled.

This is a cold post-frontal airmass. Lows are expected to drop
into the teens across most of the region, with single digits
across the Poconos. Wind chills will be quite cold, especially
considering the warm up we just experienced. Conditions are
expected to stay above Wind Chill Criteria across the Poconos.

Surface high pressure will be centered over the NC/ VA border
Sunday morning as the potent shortwave from today exits the
region. The surface high will slowly exit the coast Sunday
afternoon, with clear skies across the region.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The mid level pattern should transition from a generally zonal
flow on Sunday evening to a digging trough over the western part
of the country and ridging over the east on Tuesday afternoon.

Surface high pressure is forecast to be located off the Middle
Atlantic Coast on Sunday evening. The air mass will continue to
move out to sea. It should bring us dry weather from Sunday
night into Monday night. Temperatures are expected to begin to
trend milder in the return south to southwest flow on the back
side of the departing high. Lows on Sunday night should favor
the 20s, with highs on Monday mainly in the 50s. Minimum
temperatures on Monday night are anticipated to be in the 30s
and lower 40s.

Low pressure is expected to move northeastward across the Great
Lakes on Tuesday. The continued warm advection in our region
will bring increasing moisture. As a result, we are forecasting
a mostly cloudy sky along with periods of rain. High
temperatures on Tuesday should favor the 50s and lower 60s.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Strong surface low pressure is forecast to move from the
eastern Great Lakes down the Saint Lawrence River Valley on
Tuesday night and Wednesday. The low will likely pull a cold
front across our region during the afternoon and early evening
hours on Wednesday. The potential for rain is expected to
gradually decrease from Tuesday night into Wednesday, even as
the cold front approaches. Conditions are anticipated to remain
mild in advance of the front, with highs on Wednesday getting up
into the 60s in much of our region. Temperatures should not
begin to fall until after sunset on Wednesday, with readings
forecast to drop into the 20s and 30s on Wednesday night.

Surface high pressure is expected to nose into our area from
the northwest on north on Thursday. However, our next weather
system should already be approaching from the southwest on
Thursday. Low pressure is forecast to be developing in the lower
Mississippi River Valley and the Tennessee River on Thursday.
The circulation around the high to our north and the low well to
our southwest should result in a developing easterly flow in
our region on Thursday. We should see cloudy conditions at that
time along with an increasing chance of precipitation. With some
cold air in place, a light wintry mix is possible, mainly in
eastern Pennsylvania, and in northern and central New Jersey,
with light rain in areas to the south.

The low is forecast to pass through or near our region on
Friday morning as it continues to move northeastward and
strengthen. Since the exact track of the low remains uncertain
at this point, so does the precipitation type forecast. For now,
we will paint it as a wintry mix to the northwest of the
Interstate 95 Corridor for Thursday night into Friday, and
mainly rain to the southeast.

It appears as though the low will continue to move
northeastward and away from our region on Saturday, allowing for
the return of cold dry weather for Saturday.
