.SYNOPSIS...
Two additional weak clipper systems will affect the region through
Tuesday night. Strong Arctic high pressure then builds in for
Wednesday and Thursday before moving offshore Friday. A strong
coastal storm may affect the region Friday night and Saturday, with
high pressure building in for later in the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Surface ridge is centered over eastern Pennsylvania. Winds are
beginning to diminish, and will become more southerly this
afternoon as the high departs. not much in the way of warm air
advection, but highs today should end up in the 20s to low 30s
north and west of the Fall Line, and in the mid to upper 30s
elsewhere. Sky cover will be variable today, with at least a
few hours of clearing expected before increasing cloudiness
occurs by mid or late afternoon.

A warm-advection regime sets up tonight as a weak vort max zips
east- northeast across the northern Mid-Atlantic. Deterministic
solutions continue to depict a region of light snow attendant
to this perturbation, but mostly shadows areas south of I-78. To
the north, the window for light snow is brief...probably 2-5
hours (and most likely between 00z and 06z Tuesday). With scarce
moisture to work with, there should be little measurable snow
with this overnight system. A coating to a few tenths of an inch
are possible, with the best chances for measurable snow in the
southern Poconos. Elsewhere, increased cloudiness will occur,
but conditions should be mainly dry. Temperatures will drop
little in the warm-advection regime, especially with increasing
cloud cover stunting nocturnal radiational cooling.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Yet another clipper type system with limited moisture will move into
the area on Tuesday. With southwest flow ahead of it, Tuesday is
likely to be the warmest day of the week, with highs getting into
the upper 30s and low to mid 40s in most places. Recent trends are
indicating that this system is unlikely to produce much if any
precipitation. Did leave a mention of some sprinkles or flurries in
for the northwest half of the region, but not expecting much to come
of this. A cold front associated with the clipper should move
through during the daytime hours.

Behind the clipper, much colder air returns as Arctic high pressure
builds in. Lows Tuesday night will drop into the 10s and 20s with
colder wind chills. Wednesday will be the coldest day of the stretch
and likely one of the coldest of the season. 850mb temperatures dive
to near -20C, approaching climatological minimum values per SPC
sounding climatology. We'll see plenty of sunshine Wednesday, but
highs are unlikely to get out of the 20s, with wind chills in the
single digits and 10s. Winds will diminish Wednesday night, setting
up some of the coldest air temperatures of the season as radiational
cooling prevails in the increasingly calm and very dry air mass.
Single digits will be common, with some sub-zero readings likely up
north.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Overview...

In the long term, all eyes are on the end of the week as a potential
storm takes shape off the US East Coast. The Arctic high pressure
from midweek remains in control through Thursday. From there, the
range of possible outcomes diverges wildly. With strong ridging
present in the West, a deep trough will dig into the Southeast, with
a strong shortwave embedded within the base. This trough will
gradually tilt from positive to neutral or negative as it moves
towards the Southeast coast. This will spur offshore cyclogenesis,
with its strength and placement dependent on how fast the trough
begins to tilt negative. In addition, the developing storm appears
likely to eventually phase with a northern stream shortwave dropping
out of Canada, which would yield further intensification as it moves
north or northeast. The track of this developing low will then
determine potential impacts for the Northeast and mid-Atlantic.

Based on the potent nature of the shortwaves involved and with
unusually strong baroclinicity likely to be present, this has the
potential to be a strong storm. Certainly cannot ignore the number
of various ensemble system members and occasional deterministic runs
showing sub-970mb cyclones along or within striking distance of the
Northeast and mid-Atlantic coasts. At this early stage, a multi-
cycle consensus of model guidance favors a glancing blow for our
region, with potentially greater impacts towards New England or
Atlantic Canada. However, this system does have some of the
hallmarks of previous high impact storms where medium range models
displayed a right of track (ROT) bias. And ensemble spread has
generally been favoring the left side of the means and deterministic
runs. So we are definitely not out of the woods, but we also have
several days to watch this, and it will likely be some time before
we can definitively say whether there will be any impacts locally.

Dailies...

Thursday-Thursday night... Not much change on Thursday versus
Wednesday as strong Arctic high pressure remains in control. As the
high starts to shift east, a light southwest flow should develop,
and a little bit of air mass moderation is probable. But it will
still be a cold day with highs in the 20s and low 30s. Overnight
lows in the 10s and 20s are expected.

Friday-Saturday... Most of the focus for the long range will be on
this period. Any precipitation during the daytime Friday would be
light and associated with the northern stream component of the
potential larger storm. Should we see a "main event", it would
mainly be concentrated during Friday night and the first half of
Saturday. 24.00z guidance was generally west of 23.12z guidance,
with a multi-cycle consensus of deterministic and ensemble outcomes
favoring a grazing impact from a strong coastal storm. The latest
NBM looked quite reasonable for this period, and so essentially left
the forecast at that. This resulted in chc PoPs for eastern portions
of the region, tapering to slgt chc further inland. With an offshore
storm track, snow would be the favored ptype should precipitation
occur. Plenty of change is likely to the forecast, but this will
remain a period to watch.

Sunday... Cool and dry weather appears likely in the wake of
whatever becomes of the potential coastal low. Stuck with the latest
NBM forecast for this period.

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...VFR with light northwest winds in the morning becoming
variable during the afternoon. Moderate confidence.

Tonight...Mainly VFR, though cannot completely rule out some
brief light snow/restrictions at ABE during the late evening.
Winds becoming south or southeast up to 10 kt. Moderate
confidence.

Outlook...

Tuesday... Mainly VFR. Low chance of a rain or snow shower, mainly
in the morning, but little impact is expected. Winds shifting from
southwest to northwest at 5 to 10 kt. Moderate confidence.

Tuesday night through Wednesday night...VFR. Northwest winds less
than 10 kt Tuesday night, increasing to 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to
20 kt Wednesday, decreasing and eventually becoming light and
variable Wednesday night. High confidence.

Thursday-Thursday night... VFR. Winds mostly light and variable, but
probably favoring a southwesterly direction by Thursday afternoon.
High confidence.

Friday... Mainly VFR. Light westerly winds. Moderate confidence.

Mainly sub-advisory conditions are expected through tonight, with
northwest winds around 5 to 15 kt this morning become southwest and
increase to 10 to 20 kt this afternoon and tonight. Winds may
approach advisory criteria at times tonight, but overall, think
conditions will remain predominantly below thresholds. Seas will
generally range from 3 to 4 feet.

Outlook...

Tuesday-Tuesday night... Mainly sub-SCA conditions are expected.
Winds shifting from southwest to northwest at 10 to 15 kt with some
gusts near to a little above 20 kt. Seas may linger near 5 ft early
Tuesday, but should mainly be around 3 to 4 ft.

Wednesday-Wednesday night... Mainly sub-SCA conditions are expected.
Northwest winds around 15 kt. Some gusts close to 25 kt are possible
during the day Wednesday, and cannot rule out a period of SCA
conditions, but it looks marginal at best. Seas 3 to 4 ft.

Thursday-Friday... Sub-SCA conditions expected. Winds shifting from
southwest to northwest on Thursday, then back to northwest later
Friday, with speeds 10 to 15 kt. Seas 2 to 3 ft.
