.SYNOPSIS...
Artic high pressure will build over the region through the weekend.
A fast moving trough of low pressure will cross our region Monday
night, followed by a milder Pacific high which will promote a
warming trend through the last week of 2022.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Low pressure at the surface and aloft will drift northward across
western Quebec today and tonight. The circulation around the system
will continue to bring frigid air into our region from the west.
A mid level short wave trough rotating around the low is forecast to
pass overhead this morning with another impulse following this
afternoon. As a result, the cloud cover over eastern Pennsylvania,
and northern and central New Jersey should vary from scattered to
overcast today with some flurries possible. Mainly scattered cloud
cover is expected over eastern Maryland, Delaware and southern New
Jersey.
High temperatures should range from the single digits in the
elevated terrain up north to the lower 20s along the coast. There
should continue to be a west wind 10 to 20 MPH with gusts of 25 to
30 MPH. Wind chill values this morning are forecast to stay in the
20 to 30 below range in the Poconos and in the 5 to 20 below range
elsewhere. We will keep the Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories in
place.
Wind speeds are expected to diminish to around 10 MPH for tonight as
the pressure gradient relaxes a bit. Lows will likely favor the 5 to
15 degree range in our region with scattered clouds.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As the low which brought the arctic front Friday continues to
progress further away from our region through the weekend, we should
see slight moderating temperatures as well as decreasing wind speeds
(thanks to a decreasing pressure gradient). Thus, through the day
Monday, we should see tranquil, albeit still well colder than normal
conditions.
The main feature of note in this period is the mid level short wave
trough expected to quickly progress over our region Monday night.
Most deterministic models depict very light precip in the area of E
PA or NW NJ for at least a brief period, and low level winds should
veer to southwesterly ahead of this trough allowing for a brief
period of moisture advection before the trough arrives.
Consequently, included a 20 to 30 percent chance of snow showers
late Monday night into Tuesday morning, primarily for areas north
and west of the fall line. Even if snow showers develop though,
accumulations will be very light even with the moisture advection,
moisture will still be limited and this trough is moving rather
fast, so there is only a brief window of opportunity for any
precipitation.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A warming trend is expected through the remainder of the week as the
pattern shifts and the trough over the east gradually becomes
replaced by an upper level ridge. We look likely to see, on average,
a 5 degree gain in high temperatures each day, ending up Friday with
highs in the 50s for most of the region (higher elevations in the
southern Poconos and NW NJ may stay in the 40s). A trough lifting
from the southern Rockies to the western Great Lakes may bring our
next chance of rain at the very end of the week.

tonight as the arctic air and gusty winds remain in place in our
marine area.
Outlook...
Sunday...SCA conditions likely to continue through most of the day
for the ocean waters. May have some lingering freezing spray until
the winds subside late Sunday.
Monday through Wednesday...winds and seas should stay below SCA
criteria.

.CLIMATE...
A very cold Christmas weekend remains in the forecast. Highs
are currently projected to get no higher than the 20s both
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This is a decent cold snap for
any December, as the last time we had two or more days in a row
with highs in the 20s at PHL was back in 2017, 5 years ago.
However, for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day itself, it's more
notable, as we've been on quite a stretch of warm Christmases of
late. The last time the high on Christmas Day itself stayed
below 30 was back in 2000, when the high was only 27. The last
time both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day stayed below 30 was
back in 1989, when the high Christmas Eve was only 21 and the
high Christmas Day was only 28. So, this year's Christmas
weekend has the potential to be the coldest in over 30 years.
Something to think about if you are planning any outdoor
services.
All this having been said, it will be be tough to match the
coldest Christmas eve and Christmas Days on record, which for
much of our area dates back to 1989 and 1983. Particularly in
1983, we had some of the coldest weather we ever see in our
region, with many areas below zero at night and not even
reaching 10 above during the day.
