Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1240 AM EST Sun Dec 18 2022 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure off the Northeast coast continues to depart tonight. Meanwhile, another area of low pressure remains well north of the region. High pressure builds in from the west and dominates for much of the upcoming week. A storm system affects the region late in the new week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... As of 12:30 AM, clouds continue across the area although there are some breaks in the clouds, mainly in the northern third of the CWA. The 00z Dulles/Sterling RAOB showed a strong inversion just below 700 mb and this is where the current cloud bases are located (around 7000 feet AGL).Areas under clear skies have seen temperatures come down quickly, with areas under cloud cover seeing a slow decline in temperatures. Adjusting temperatures and sky grids were the main adjustment in the 1 AM update. Shortwave energy continues to roll across our area around a closed low in the Great Lakes. While some breaks in the cloud cover could continue overnight into Sunday morning, clouds should prevail with any clearing Sunday morning tending to fill in with daytime heating. Seeing some light returns on radar across parts of SE Pennsylvania and Delmarva, however this looks to be cloudiness given drier air below cloud base. Should be a quiet night for most over the next couple hours, though important to note some high-res guidance has shown some potential snow showers sneaking into the western portion of our CWA. Not buying this quite yet, but will keep an eye on observations, though generally thinking snow showers stay confined more towards central PA. Otherwise, lows tonight will be in the mid/upper 20s for most areas with some teens N/W. Winds will be less than 10 mph. Fair weather will continue Sunday. It will resemble today (Saturday) somewhat with periods of sun during the morning but then more clouds through the afternoon. Temperatures will be perhaps a bit cooler than today/Saturday with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s. Winds will be light during the morning then increase to 10 to 20 mph for the afternoon. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... High pressure builds in from the west and will settle itself over the area by Tuesday. Meanwhile, an upper trough will lie over the Northeast, and northwest flow will usher a chilly airmass with below normal temperatures. Skies will mostly be sunny for much of the region, although some clouds associated with Lake Effect snow bands to the north may spread into the southern Poconos. Will keep precip out of the forecast for those far northern zones, but cannot rule out a some flurries making it into portions of Carbon and Monroe counties on Monday. Brisk and cold during the period with lows generally in the low to mid 20s and highs during the day Monday and Tuesday will be in the upper 30s to low 40s. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/... The first part of the Long Term period starts out quiet. High pressure over the Northeast will move out to sea, and then a stronger area of high pressure will build into the Northern Plains and western Great Lakes Tuesday night through Wednesday. By Thursday, this high will park itself over eastern Canada, eventually becoming a 1040 to 1045 mb high by the end of the week. Temperatures will gradually moderate during this time, with highs right around the seasonal average on Wednesday, and then with return flow setting up on Thursday, highs will climb into the low to mid 40s north and west of the Fall Line, and in the upper 40s to low 50s south and east of the Fall Line. Continued focus is on potential storm late in the new week. Although there is confidence that a storm will impact not just the local area, but much of the eastern third of the Nation. However, there remains a wide spread in solutions as to exactly how this storm will develop and impact the area, most notably in terms of temperatures and precipitation type. Although no one solution will be picked for this forecast, there seems to be a trend among the operational models with the storm taking more of an inland track, developing over the Southern Plains before lifting into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley before moving into eastern Canada. This keeps the local forecast area in the warm sector, and most, if not all, of the precipitation will be plain rain, which may be heavy at times. This does not rule out the storm taking more of an easterly track, with colder air spilling into the region, resulting in more wintry precipitation. These finer details will be sorted out over the next several days as more of the regional and high- res guidance come into play. To show how much spread there is among the models, the NBM has a high of 47 for Philadelphia on Friday, whereas the NBM05Pct has a high of 21, and the NBM95Pct has a high of 65. This is why the forecast will be focused using the blend. Low pressure will be up in eastern Canada by Friday night and Saturday morning, intensifying to around 960 mb. A strong west wind will develop over much of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Based on the latest track, the strongest winds will be over the eastern Great Lakes and west of the Appalachians, but potentially damaging winds are possible down into the local forecast area. This will also usher strong cold air advection into the region starting Friday night. Low temperatures will crash into the teens by Saturday morning. Any lingering standing water on untreated surfaces could quickly freeze. Arctic high pressure continues to build in from the west on Saturday. Strong cold air advection will be underway highs as will be 15 to 20 degrees below normal, ranging from the low to mid 20s in the northern half of the forecast area and in the mid to upper 20s in the southern half. && .AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Overnight...VFR ceilings (5000-8000 feet AGL) could scatter out at times. West-northwest winds 5-10 knots, to locally light and variable or even calm. High confidence. Sunday...VFR, with ceilings around 5000 feet AGL. West-northwest winds increasing to 8-12 knots with some gusts to 15-20 knots. High confidence. Outlook... Sunday night...VFR. W winds 5 to 10 kt. Skies become generally clear after 00z.
