.SYNOPSIS...
A coastal low will continue to affect the Mid Atlantic states
through Friday, before slowly moving northeastward offshore of
New England Saturday then into the Canadian Maritimes by Sunday.
This low will remain near the Canadian Maritimes into early
next week while high pressure builds to our west. Following
precipitation tapering off on Friday, look for dry but brisk
weather through Monday. A stronger coastal storm may threaten
late in the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Mount Pocono continues to hover right around freezing and
reports freezing rain, so extended the winter storm warning
through 10AM to cover another few hours of wintry precipitation.
Otherwise, no major changes with this update.

As of 5 AM, the center of the surface low was over Cape May and
Atlantic Counties. As such, we have seen winds shift to the SW
and W for much of Delmarva. Additionally, even the lingering
light rain has moved out of these areas. For the rest of the
region, light precipitation will continue to slowly progress
northward. Precipitation rates will generally be only a few
hundredths of an inch of rain, so not expecting to add much to
the current rain totals. As for precipitation type, For the vast
majority of the region, it is plain rain now. The exception is
on the Pocono Plateau, where temperatures are hovering right
around freezing. Consequently, the station at MPO has reported
light freezing rain over the past few hours.

The surface low will continue to progress northward along the NJ
coast through the morning. By this afternoon, the center of the low
should be northeast of our region and most of the region should be
dry with the possible exception of far northern NJ and the southern
Poconos. As with early this morning, any additional precipitation
should be very light, and we are expecting the precipitation type to
be all rain.

By this evening, the low should be well to our northeast and should
continue lifting away from our region. As a result, we should see
clearing skies overnight. Winds should stay up which will keep
radiational cooling somewhat limited. None the less, lows should be
in the 20s and lower 30s across the region.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Low pressure along coastal New England will intensify through
Saturday morning as a shortwave rotating around strong
upper-level low pressure near the Great Lakes phases in, and a
new mid/upper low closes off aloft. That will send a reinforcing
shot of cold air into our region from the west. This flow will
be downsloping off the Applachians and generally drier, with
some sunshine outside of stratocumulus mainly near the Poconos
or the Lehigh Valley and Blue Ridge, drifting in from lake-
effect enhanced moisture. However, a westerly breeze will
persist and be accompanied by increasingly chilly high
temperatures, struggling to break 40 degrees even toward the
Delmarva Peninsula and the NJ shore on Sunday, with lows
dropping well into the 20s, and even teens toward the Poconos.
A stray snow shower or two could reach the Poconos later Sunday
or Sunday night, but for now am not confident enough in that
possibility to include it in the forecast.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The next week will start off relatively quiet across the
northern mid-Atlantic as the remnants of our current coastal
storm becomes captured by an upper-low drifting eastward to the
north of the Great Lakes this weekend. As that vertically-
stacked system becomes nearly stationary around New Brunswick,
it will maintain relatively cold northwest flow over the
northeastern United States, slowing the moderation of the
airmass in place in our area. Monday will remain rather brisk,
but high temperatures should gradually edge up into the 40s at
least along and southeast of the I-95 corridor through Tuesday,
as broad high pressure builds in from the midwest. Winds will
slacken as a result as well. Monday through Wednesday look
generally sunny for most of our region, with the exception being
closer to northeast PA and far northwest NJ, where some
lingering moisture rotating around the aforementioned low
combined with lake effect may bring some stratocumulus up there.
Would not completely rule out stray flurries or light snow
showers up there around Monday, but do not think there is enough
chance to include it in the forecast. On Wednesday, it appears a
relatively weak surface low and cold front will track eastward
across the Great Lakes, but in association with the leading
edge of arctic air and a more potent upper-level low to the
south of Hudson Bay. All these pieces in play, along with some
others, will set the stage and factor in to the track of what
looks to be a potentially major coastal storm around Thursday
into Friday. Models disagree on the specific track and sensible
weather impacts on our region, including frozen precipitation
coverage and amounts, and that is completely unsurprising at
this time range of a week out. However, the overall pattern
appears very conducive to a significant storm system, with
arctic air getting involved, which increases the threat of a
stronger low pressure area and frozen precipitation for at
least a portion of our area. For now, it would be wise for most
of our region to prepare for at least some snow, gusty winds,
along with another round of coastal flooding and perhaps heavy
rain as well.

.AVIATION /11Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Through 12Z...MVFR/IFR/LIFR CIGs/VSBYs in RA. E winds 15 to 20 kt
with gusts up to 30 kt, except gusts 30 to 40 kt at KACY. Winds
begin to back to the N by 10Z. Moderate confidence on the overall
pattern, but low confidence on timing details.

Today...Expect to start with IFR ceilings. Visibilities may improve
rather quickly, but ceilings may be slow to improve.
None the less, we should see clouds begin to break up, at KRDG and
KILG first, at KTTN last, between 18Z this afternoon and 06 Z
tonight. N winds early will gradually back to the W-NW throughout
the day, generally at 10 to 15 kt with gusts around 25 kt. Low
confidence especially on the timing of improving conditions.

Tonight...Once clouds scatter out, VFR conditions should continue
through the night. W winds 10 to 15 kt. Gusts to 20 kt possible.
Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Saturday through Sunday...VFR, with just some scattered to
broken clouds drifting across eastern PA and northwest NJ. W
winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts to 20 kt possible each day, and
less than 10 kt at night. High confidence.

Sunday night-Monday...Mostly VFR conditions expected, though
some low clouds may drift in from around the Poconos. Northwest
winds 10- 15 knots, with gusts 15-25 knots possible heading into
Monday. Moderate confidence.

Monday night-Tuesday...VFR conditions expected. Northwest winds
5-10 knots, becoming westerly 5-10 knots during the day
Tuesday. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
We are currently seeing a lull in the gale force gusts for areas
generally south of the Great Egg Inlet as the winds shift to
westerly. The lull will be short lived though, as gale force gusts
are expected to develop once again later this morning. There will be
a similar pattern for areas north of Great Egg Inlet, but a few
hours later.

On the Delaware Bay, winds should subside below gale force by this
evening, but are likely to stay above SCA criteria for most if not
all the night. On the Delaware and New Jersey Atlantic Coastal
waters, winds should subside slightly this evening. However, there
is a risk that gusts stay right at gale force overnight. For now,
have not extended the gale warning until we see how much winds
increase later today.

Outlook...

Saturday...A prolonged period of SCA conditions likely with
lingering westerly winds 15 to 20 kt with 25 to 30 kt gusts and
seas 5 to 7 feet.

Sunday...Winds briefly subsiding Saturday night into Sunday
night, then westerly winds picking back up later Sunday into
Sunday night with gusts 25 to 30 kt possible over the ocean and
even lower DE Bay.

Monday...Small Craft Advisory conditions likely at least over
the open ocean with respect to winds, with 25 to 30 kt gusts,
while seas may at least flirt with 5 ft as well.

Monday night-Tuesday...Conditions likely lower below small craft
advisory levels.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
With the passage of this morning's high tide, the minor coastal
flooding has largely subsided. Areas located along the backbays may
see some lingering spotty minor flooding following this morning's
high tide. As the low continues to progress through the region and
exit to the north and east later today, the threat for coastal
flooding will continue to decrease as the wind associated with the
low was the primary driver with this coastal flooding event.

The exception will be for the central New Jersey coast where the
winds will linger the longest. Another round of minor coastal
flooding is expected with Friday afternoon's high tide and as a
result a Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for Middlesex,
Monmouth, Ocean, and Southeast Burlington counties. Higher impacts
are possible on the backbays, particularly along Barnegat Bay, where
coastal flooding will be near moderate thresholds.

No further coastal flooding is expected with this event after Friday
afternoon's high tide.
