What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Dec 6, 12:59 AM EST, 2 hours 51 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Dec 6, 12:59 AM EST, 2 hours 51 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
1259 AM EST Tue Dec 6 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure shifts to our east and northeast overnight. A
series of weak low pressure systems will track to our north
Tuesday and Wednesday with a weak cold front arriving behind
them for Wednesday night. High pressure will then build to our
north Thursday through Friday, with another storm system
approaching from the west Friday into Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Cloud coverage has inc over the last few hours, slowing
radiational cooling this morning and helping stabilize temps
in the upper 20s to mid 30s, which will likely be the lows this
morning. Hi res guidance then has gradual warming occuring through
sunrise.

Trends with regards to the upcoming system continue to be
slower. By early morning Tuesday the cold air should have
started to erode and so when the light precip arrives by mid-
morning we think it will all be falling as rain in our CWA.
Regardless, it still looks like a fairly wet period. The
combination of a low level jet and warm air advection should
lead to precip enhancement through the afternoon into the
evening hours Tuesday. Anticipate about a tenth west of the I95
corridor in the morning and then up to about one third of an
inch over the region Tuesday afternoon with clouds continuing to
lower through the afternoon. Highs under the strong warm air
advection should warm into the mid to upper 50s with 60s
possible for eastern locations across DelMarVa and the south
Jersey coastline.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Stalled boundary in our vicinity combined with an upper level
shortwave pushing northeastward toward us promises to result in
a rainy Tuesday night across the region. Strengthening low level
jet combined with relatively warm (near 50) surface
temperatures and plentiful moisture should combine to result in
multiple periods of rain during the night. Total precipitation
likely ends up between a half an inch and an inch.

Low clouds, mist and a few showers linger mainly Wednesday
morning, but the shortwave and weak surface low associated with
it will be pushing northeastward away from us, so expect an
overall drying trend. With winds shifting to the southwest and
some possible breaks in the clouds by afternoon, temps likely
approach, and possibly top, 60 degrees.

Cold front slides southeastward across the area Wednesday
night, possibly resulting in a few showers in the evening before
dry and cool advection starts to clear us out. Temps will
remain above normal but should drop back into the 40s.

Canadian high pressure then gradually builds southeastward into
the area for Thursday. Temps will be a bit cooler, but a bit
more sun is expected, and it should stay dry. Highs mostly in
the 50s, which is still above normal for this time of year.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
At the start of the long term Thursday night, guidance is in
relative agreement, but its pretty much all downhill from there
in that department. Speed differences with different pieces of
energy result in feature interaction differences over time which
result in considerably uncertainty as early as late Friday,
which only increases from there. This is made all the more
important because cold air will be available, which means some
wintry precip can't be ruled out.

For Thursday night, at least we have reasonable certainty that
building high pressure from the northwest should keep
conditions generally dry, though disturbances to our southwest
likely help keep cloud cover elevated. Temperatures will be more
seasonable than the prior several nights, with temperatures
mostly in the 30s.

Friday afternoon, guidance has a closed upper low in the
vicinity of northern Illinois, but by Friday night, guidance
diverges significantly, with the GFS sending this closed low
into Lake Erie, the EC towards eastern Ohio, and the GGEM into
the UP of Michigan. From there, the GGEM dissipates it in
southern Ontario, the EC does likewise near the Delmarva, while
the GFS hangs onto it a bit longer, keeping it together over the
southern tier of New York State. This results in the GFS holding
precip together as the surface low hangs on into the eastern
Great Lakes, but it also keeps us mild with mainly rain. The
GGEM, being further north, also is relatively warm, but mostly
dissipates the rain as it moves into the region as the forcing
aloft falls apart. Finally, the EC, diving the system further
south before it weakens, sends most of the precip to our south,
but does allow some to enter our southern and western zones.
Because of its southerly trajectory, it also allows more cold
air into the region, providing an opportunity for wintry
weather.

Given the high uncertainty here, opted to not stray much from
the existing forecast, and given the consensus for a warmer
solution, kept the mention of wintry weather limited to
northernmost locales, but confidence on the forecast Friday into
Saturday is exceptionally low.

Saturday night into Sunday, the GFS lingers the system and
keeps some rain around. The GGEM also lingers the remnants,
keeping a few showers around, while the EC tries to dry us out.
Again, given considerable uncertainty, mostly kept close to
previous forecast which was mostly dry, but with plenty of
clouds and near normal temperatures.

Late Sunday into Monday, GGEM and EC have another wave passing
mostly to our south, with the GGEM further north and stronger
than the EC, with another round of precip possible. GFS is
completely on its own by this point, with a ridge of high
pressure overhead. Again, didn't stray far from continuity, with
slight chance to chance pops and plenty of cloud cover along
with seasonable temperatures.

The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Early Morning...VFR with increasing clouds. Some MVFR CIGS are
possible before 12Z KABE/KRDG. Variable winds 5 knots or less.

becomes more widespread overnight. Ceiling and visibility
restrictions expected through early Wed morning. Southeast winds
around 5-10 knots gradually veer to the south. Medium
confidence.

out and clouds gradually break up. South to southwest winds less
than 10 knots, becoming westerly at night. Low confidence.
