National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
313 AM EST Fri Dec 2 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
Surface high pressure will gradually shift offshore later today. A
strong cold front crosses our area late Saturday afternoon, then
high pressure builds in Sunday into Monday. The next system looks to
arrive Wednesday followed by high pressure building toward our
region Thursday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A mid level ridge axis located over the Ohio River Valley and the
Great Lakes early this morning will continue to work its way
eastward and it should pass overhead this evening. Surface high
pressure was located in our region early this morning. The air mass
will move out to sea today and tonight. A cold front approaching
from the west is expected to reach the central Great Lakes and the
lower Ohio River Valley toward daybreak on Saturday.
The wind will remain light and variable through late morning due to
the center of the high being in our vicinity. As the high moves
farther off the coast, a southerly surface flow will develop in its
wake for this afternoon into tonight. The southerly flow is
anticipated to bring temperatures into the 40s in much of our region
for this afternoon. Some readings in the lower 50s are possible in
eastern Maryland and Delaware. The sky is forecast to remain clear
this morning, with some patchy mid level clouds expected for this
afternoon in the developing warm advection aloft.
We will likely see an increase in cloud cover tonight ahead of our
next weather system. A strong (50+ knot) low level south southwest
jet is forecast to settle over our region late tonight. However, the
strong winds are not expected to mix to the surface. The leading
edge of the rain showers associated with the approaching cold front
should arrive in eastern Pennsylvania and northwestern New Jersey
around daybreak on Saturday. Tonight's minimum temperatures
(generally in the 30s) will likely occur before midnight. The
increasing cloud cover the the southerly flow is expected to cause
temperatures to rise a bit late tonight. Readings will likely be
above freezing at all location when the precipitation begins in our
region.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Wet and milder Saturday then much drier and turning colder Sunday.
A central Canadian upper-level trough is forecast to remain nearly
stationary. A potent shortwave trough tracking along the southern
periphery of the main trough is forecast to quickly lift across the
eastern Great Lakes to near New England Saturday. It may also take
on a negative tilt as is does so. Surface low pressure tied to this
feature will track well up into Canada Saturday, however a strong
cold front tied to it will sweep across our region late Saturday
afternoon or early evening. A zone of stronger ascent enhanced by a
40-60 knot low-level jet (925 mb) will result in an area of
organized showers or even a period of rain during the morning to
early afternoon hours. There should be a break in the showers as the
initial batch exits offshore in conjunction with the strong low-
level jet and associated warm air advection. A narrow line or broken
line of low-topped showers may then cross the region later in the
afternoon into the early evening hours associated with the cold
front. This development could be tempered some as the model forecast
soundings show a much drier air mass overspreading the area quickly
along and behind the front. Instability continues to look rather
limited therefore no thunder is mentioned.
The system looks like a quick mover, therefore rainfall amounts are
currently forecast to be one-half of an inch or less despite the
precipitable water values reaching or exceeding 1-inch for a time.
The strong low-level flow enhancing the warm air advection will
result in temperatures Saturday surging to around 60 degrees from
about the fall line south and eastward. Some deeper mixing will also
result in a gusty southerly surface wind ahead of the front with
gusts in the 25-35 mph range, especially across the coastal plain.
In the wake of the cold front, strong cold air advection will
deliver a much colder air mass as well as a much drier one Saturday
night. A gusty west to northwest wind may occur in the evening in
the wake of the cold front during the peak cold air advection.
Temperatures are forecast to drop into the 20s and 30s overnight,
and the added breeze will result in wind chills dropping into the
20s and some teens.
As we go through Sunday, the flow is more zonal aloft and sprawling
surface high pressure is currently forecast to build over our area.
While some stratocumulus may develop during daytime heating, the air
mass is forecast to be rather dry and that should result in a good
amount of sunshine. It will be a colder day with afternoon
temperatures topping out in the low to mid 40s for most places, then
we drop into the 20s at night with even less wind.
&&
.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Summary...Temperature roller coaster continues due to fast flow,
with unsettled weather returning Tuesday and Wednesday.
Synoptic Overview...A strong upper-level trough is forecast to be
across much of Canada through this time frame with its southern
extent attempting to amplify at times across the northern tier of
the U.S. This will drive the next cold front across our area around
the Wednesday time frame, with warmer air ahead of it followed by a
shot of much colder air. The guidance overall seems to continue with
a slower arrival of the cold front next week, with a weaker system
sliding by Tuesday and then the actual cold front arriving during
Wednesday.
For Monday...Surface high pressure is currently forecast to weaken
some as it shifts to our northeast. As that occurs, the Canadian
upper-level trough is forecast to amplify south and eastward some.
This will drive surface low pressure primarily across the central
Plains then across the Great Lakes region Monday night. However, a
warm front should be organizing to our southwest due to a zone of
increasing low-level warm air advection. Departing high pressure may
become wedged into our parts of the Mid-Atlantic Monday night,
however this may not be all that strong. Given the warm air
advection, precipitation that is able to reach our area (western
zones) closer to daybreak Tuesday should be primarily in the form of
rain. Some frozen precipitation cannot be ruled out at the onset in
the Pocono region, however overall it should be warming enough for
mainly rain. Since the timing can change and dry low-level air may
hang on longer, continued to not increase the PoPs as quickly Monday
night. Daytime temperatures will climb into the 40s for most of the
region, then temperatures Monday night may bottom out in the evening
before potentially recovering some overnight as clouds thicken.
For Tuesday and Wednesday...A low confidence forecast continues as
the details and timing can continue to change, although it appears
that the model guidance overall still suggests a slower arrival of
the cold front. An upper-level trough amplifying toward us may tend
to lift just to our north during the latter portions of this time
frame. Surface low pressure is forecast to track to our north,
however a warm front will be working toward us from the southwest.
An initial disturbance moving through Tuesday should produce some
showers for a time. Stronger low-level warm air advection should
limit any frozen precipitation types and daytime temperatures are
forecast to peak into the 50s across much of the area both days. The
details continue to be less certain this far out and therefore kept
the forecast precipitation types on the more simpler side. Based on
the slower arrival of the cold front, Wednesday should also be a
milder day across much of the area especially for the coastal plain.
Some colder air then returns Wednesday night.
For Thursday...As the upper-level trough amplifies more across
portions of eastern Canada, we remain in a more zonal flow aloft.
This should direct surface high pressure toward our area, although
we should be within a zone of a tightened pressure gradient. This
may result in brisk conditions, and also a colder and much drier air
mass is forecast to be settling in.

.AVIATION /08Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Today...VFR with scattered clouds. Variable wind 5 knots or less,
becoming south 5 to 10 knots. High confidence.
Tonight...VFR with increasing cloud cover. South wind 5 to 10 knots.
Low level wind shear is expected after about 08Z due to the presence
of a south southwest low level jet around 50 knots. High
confidence.
Outlook...
Saturday...MVFR and/or IFR conditions through about midday as
organized showers move through, the conditions improve to VFR by
late afternoon. Some additional showers could move through later in
the afternoon or early evening with a cold front. South to southwest
winds 12-18 knots with gusts 20-30 knots, becoming west to northwest
later in the afternoon. A period of low-level wind shear is probable
during the day due to a 40-60 knot southwesterly low-level jet. Low
confidence regarding the timing and details.
Saturday night...VFR. Northwest winds diminishing to 10 knots or
less. Moderate confidence.
Sunday...VFR. Northwest winds 10 knots or less becoming southwest in
the afternoon, then mostly light and variable at night. Moderate
confidence.
Monday...VFR. Light and variable winds becoming south to southeast
around 5 knots. Moderate confidence.
Tuesday...Sub-VFR conditions probable with some showers. Southerly
winds 5-10 knots. Low confidence.
&&
.MARINE...
A northwest wind 5 to 10 knots this morning is forecast to become
southerly, increasing to 10 to 15 knots this afternoon. Wind speeds
are expected to be 15 to 20 knots tonight, with gusts of 25 to 30
knots after midnight. As a result, there is a Small Craft Advisory
in effect beginning at midnight.
Outlook...
Saturday...Small Craft Advisory for Delaware Bay, and a Gale Watch
for the New Jersey and Delaware Atlantic coastal waters. South to
southwest winds will be strong due to a robust low-level jet,
however the challenge is how much mixes down. It appears the greater
chance for a period of low-end gale force gusts is across the
Atlantic coastal waters from about mid-morning to mid-afternoon,
therefore a Gale Watch has been issued to cover this potential.
Saturday night...The flow weakens some through the evening in the
wake of a cold front and any gales should end early. A Small Craft
Advisory however will be needed for all zones.
Sunday...Small Craft Advisory conditions (gusts) may linger early
Sunday morning, otherwise conditions improving.
Monday and Tuesday...The conditions are anticipated to be below
Small Craft Advisory criteria.
