Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1248 PM EDT Fri Jul 15 2022 .SYNOPSIS... A weak front will linger across parts of Delmarva today and tonight as high pressure builds in from the northwest, then high pressure shifts offshore tonight and Saturday. A cold front is forecast to slowly approach our area Sunday night, then settle across our area Monday night. The front may dissipate in place Tuesday into Wednesday, then the next cold front should arrive later Thursday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... The forecast is going largely as planned heading into the early afternoon with high clouds mostly breaking overhead. Winds will gradually trend more eastward then southeast, especially over the urban corridor and into southern New Jersey. Temperatures are warming quite nicely, with the warmest readings currently over the Philadelphia metro with mid 80s readings already appearing. Cooler with highs in the upper 70s to near 80 along the coast due to the onshore flow. A frontal boundary is forecast to meander in eastern Maryland, Delaware and far southern New Jersey through tonight as high pressure moves from the Great Lakes to the waters off New England. The chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue into this evening in the vicinity of the surface front. A mid level short wave trough was located over the eastern Great Lakes and the upper Ohio River Valley early this morning. The feature will progress to the east with its axis passing over our region during the afternoon and early evening hours. It may enhance the potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms near the front at that time. Also, some of the guidance suggests that it may touch off some localized convection north of the boundary in southern New Jersey. Meanwhile, no precipitation is anticipated for today and tonight in eastern Pennsylvania, and in northern and central New Jersey where conditions will be drier and more stable than areas to the south. The high clouds over eastern Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey early this morning are associated with an upper level jet. The jet should pull away to our east today, taking the high clouds with it. However, debris clouds from any additional convection that develops will likely affect those areas at times through the day. Scattered cumulus is expected for eastern Pennsylvania and for northern and central New Jersey. Those areas may see an increase in high clouds late tonight ahead of another mid level short wave approaching from the northwest. A light north to northeast wind this morning is forecast to veer to the east and southeast this afternoon. Highs should favor the 80s this afternoon with lows tonight expected to be mostly in the 60s. && .SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... An upper-level trough will be crossing the area Saturday, however it is forecast to weaken some as it does so. Several shortwaves associated with the trough aloft will provide enough forcing for ascent for some convective development during the day Saturday. The guidance has differed on the evolution of the convection, however there is some uptick in at least some of the guidance showing a bit more convection developing Saturday afternoon and evening. The passage of the trough axis and a trailing shortwave Saturday night along with some increase in the precipitable water may result in some increase in showers and thunderstorms, for at least parts of the region. Given weak shear, convection looks to be isolated to scattered overall. Given some increase in the low-level moisture Saturday, there could be patches of low clouds/fog to start the day. Afternoon temperatures in the 80s, although cooler in the Poconos and along the coast. For Sunday, a weak front may be draped in the vicinity of Delmarva. There looks to be a break between the Saturday night shortwave as it moves offshore before influence from an incoming wave over the Ohio Valley takes control later Sunday afternoon and evening. Kept PoPs increasing through the day into the evening, although they are held no higher than the chance range. The potential for more widespread convection may not come until Monday since the upper-level system lags to the west. Highs may be similar to Saturday. It will be more humid though with dew points across most of the region around 70 degrees. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... Summary...Warm to hot along with humid conditions; highest convective chances are forecast to be on Monday. Synoptic Overview...An upper-level trough gradually overspreads the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions Monday before lifting out during Tuesday. The flow aloft backs more zonal into Wednesday ahead of a sharpening upper-level trough in the Midwest and upper Great Lakes region. At the surface, high pressure looks to be anchored offshore resulting in a south to southwest flow of warm to hot and also humid air. A cold front is forecast to be approaching Sunday night tied to the aforementioned upper-level trough. The cold front looks to settle across our area Monday night, however it may not get to far south and east as the upper-level trough lifts out. The front either lingers nearby or dissipates as another cold front looks to arrive later Thursday. For Monday...This time frame will be influenced by an upper- level trough that will gradually cross the Northeast and Mid- Atlantic regions. A fairly strong shortwave is forecast to accompany the trough, and at the surface a cold front will be slowly making its way into our area. Increasing ascent tied to the upper-level trough and also the cold front should result in increasing shower and thunderstorm development. The heat and humidity will continue, although if cloud cover increases sooner and convection becomes more widespread then that will keep temperatures down some. A plume of 2.00-2.50 inches of precipitable water is forecast to slide across our area, therefore convective elements will produce locally very heavy rain. For Tuesday and Wednesday...The aforementioned upper-level trough is forecast to be shifting northeast and east of our area during Tuesday, and the precipitable water values are forecast to lower to near 1.50 inches. This will settle the cold front farther south and east across our area, although it may end up dissipating with time. The flow aloft backs more zonal for a time, and some drier low-level air sitting to our northwest may end up staying there as there appears to not be much of a southward push. Therefore, hot and humid conditions will continue and afternoon heat indices Wednesday are forecast to be very near 100 degrees for several areas. For Thursday...An upper-level trough is forecast to be sliding across the Midwest and Great Lakes region. As this continues to press eastward, a cold front will be arriving into our area mostly later in the day. Some showers and thunderstorms should develop ahead of and with the front. Plenty of heat and humidity looks to be in place, and while dew points might mix out a little during peak heating the heat indices are currently forecast to peak in the 95- 100 degree range for much of the area. Any severe thunderstorm risk will depend on the timing of the front, shear and instability magnitudes along with forcing. && .AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Today...VFR with scattered clouds. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon, mainly around KMIV and KACY and points south. North to northeast wind 5 to 10 knots, becoming east to southeast through the afternoon. High confidence. Tonight...Mainly VFR. However, some MVFR/IFR ceilings may develop after 06Z. Variable wind 6 knots or less. Low confidence regarding the flight categories after 06Z. Outlook... A north to northeast wind around 10 MPH this morning is expected to veer to the east and southeast this afternoon. Breaking waves should be 1 to 2 feet with a medium period south to east swell. Due to the onshore flow in combination with the large tidal range associated with the full moon, we will carry a MODERATE risk for the development of dangerous rip currents for today along the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey. The greatest potential for rip currents should be around the afternoon low tide. A southeast wind 5 to 10 MPH is forecast for Saturday. Breaking waves are expected to be around 1 foot with a medium period southeast to east swell. There is a LOW risk for rip currents on Saturday. && .TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING... We will continue to keep an eye on this evening's high tide. The onshore flow today should keep tidal departures in the +0.4 to +0.6 foot range. As a result, another round of spotty minor tidal flooding is expected for this evening in the coastal counties of Delaware and New Jersey, and along Delaware Bay. The astronomical high tide levels will be on the decrease this weekend as we continue to move away from the full moon.
