What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale watch went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale watch went out at Feb 15, 1:32 PM EST, 1 hour 25 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 15, 1:32 PM EST, 1 hour 25 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
132 PM EST Tue Feb 15 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure will build across the Middle Atlantic region
today. As the high moves offshore tonight and Wednesday, a southerly
flow will develop and become stronger Thursday. Low pressure will
pass from the Ohio Valley Thursday and progress quickly down the
Saint Lawrence Valley Thursday night. This will cause a strong cold
front to cross our area Thursday night. High pressure will return
briefly for Friday, but then another weaker cold front will move
across the area late Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A strong center of high pressure building out of the Great Lakes
will crest over the region today. We'll see some rather impressive
high barometer readings today, in the neighborhood of 1040 mb or
around 30.70 ins Hg, fairly anomalous values for our area. With such
strong high pressure in command, a fair weather day is underway.
Temperatures aloft are still quite cold, but are moderating
versus yesterday. And with full sunshine and the downsloping
westerly flow, went a little on the warmer side of guidance for
highs today. It will still be a cooler than average days though
with highs ranging through the 30s. Mostly sunny skies are
expected, with the dry air mass unlikely to support more than
isolated diurnal cumulus and with just a few high clouds
streaming through.

Overnight lows could be a little tricky. Suspect temps will fall
quickly after sunset with clear skies, low dewpoints, and light
winds. However, as the high shifts offshore, light onshore flow
will develop by later in the night and probably cause
temperatures to stabilize or even rise especially near the
coast. Given how good the radiational cooling conditions should
be just after sunset, I did make a sizable downward adjustment
to the lows, and it's possible they could drop even more than
forecast in some spots. Am expecting 10s and low 20s across the
board.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will continue to push further out to sea Wednesday.
The return flow behind the high will strengthen and bring much
warmer and increasingly more humid air to the area. Highs Wed. will
be above normal with upper 40s/low 50s for Delmarva, southern NJ and
metro Philadelphia areas. Up across the Poconos and north NJ, highs
will be in the low 40s for the most part. The last of any snow on
the ground will likely be gone by days end. Increasing clouds and
mild temps expected for Wed night. South winds will increase to 10
to 15 mph.

A cold front will approach the area Thu so pops will increase from W
to E across the region during the day. Low pressure will deepen
along the front across the Tenn/Ohio Valley areas and then quickly
move towards the lower Great Lakes. On Thu night the low will move
down the St. Lawrence Valley dragging a strong cold front across the
Middle Atlantic region. Rains will continue to overspread the area
Thu evening and continue overnight.The rains may become heavy and
showery for awhile with even a chance for a tstm. Strong/gusty winds
are expected too with some guidance indicating that gusts over 40
mph are possible. The details about which areas will be impacted
will be fine-tuned later today and tonight. Rains of 1.0 to 1.5
inches are possible by Fri morning.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Improving conditions are expected Friday following the cold
front as it moves offshore. Precipitation will end during the
morning as drier and cooler air moves in. Highs on Fri will
still be above normal as the cold air advection will not become
a factor until the afternoon. Highs in the 50s for S/E areas and
40s N/W. Readings will drop thru the afternoon with some
moderately gusty winds.

Over the weekend and into Monday, dry weather is expected for
our area as high pressure builds back across the region.
Temperatures will be near mid-February norms for the weekend
before going above normal for Monday.

&&
