Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
1149 AM EST Wed Jan 26 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure will be centered over the Midwest today. That
high will gradually shift eastward, cresting over our region early
Thursday before moving offshore by Thursday night. A strong coastal
storm is likely to begin developing off the Southeast coast on
Friday, and to pass east of our region on Saturday. High pressure
returns for the end of the weekend and early next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A positively-tilted trough will be moving through the Northeast
today, with a reinforcing surge of colder air moving through the
northern Mid-Atlantic this morning. Cold advection will continue for
much of today, with northwest surface winds generally in the 10 to
15 mph range with occasional gusts above 20 mph possible this
afternoon. Skies will generally be mostly sunny, though periods of
increased cloud cover are possible, especially in the northern and
western CWA. Despite the insolation, highs today will be much colder
than yesterday in most locations, with teens expected in the
Poconos, 20s northwest of the I-95 corridor, and upper 20s to lower
30s to the southeast.
Forecast lows tonight are the primary challenge in the near-term
period, with the setup favorable for rapid cooling after sunset. A
surface ridge will migrate into the area tonight, with its axis
likely straddling the CWA between 06z and 12z. Winds will decouple
quickly after dark, and skies will likely be mostly clear for much
of the night. This is a pattern that commonly results in minimum
temperatures noticeably lower than consensus. I generally went 3-6
degrees below consensus statistical guidance (a little bit less than
that in the urban corridor). Think lows below zero are probable in
the Poconos, and single digits are likely in the Lehigh Valley,
northern New Jersey, and the Pine Barrens.
The ridge axis will take its time moving offshore on Thursday, with
return flow gradually establishing itself during the afternoon.
However, this will likely only result in a modest warmup, with highs
about 3-7 degrees higher than those forecast for today. Conditions
should continue to be dry, with little synoptically-evident forcing
in place to generate precipitation in the Northeast.
&&
.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
No surprises here, as we continue to watch a potentially major
winter storm affecting portions of the Eastern Seaboard late Friday
and Saturday. Sizable differences in model guidance remain,
primarily owing to the placement of a shortwave trough which will be
moving through western Canada today, and another shortwave well to
its north-northeast. The tracks of, and interactions between, these
shortwaves will be the primary drivers of a developing surface low
and probable bomb cyclone off the US East Coast Friday and Saturday.
Similar to last night, the majority of tonight's 26.00z guidance had
an overall eastward look relative to their more westward 25.12z
counterparts. The phasing between the shortwaves generally happened
later, with a more positive tilt longwave trough as it approached
the Southeast coast. This then results in a further east track of
the surface low. Even the EC, which remains on the western edge and
still shows a high impact event, was a little more east. And other
models such as the GFS and UKMET are even further east and would be
quite low impact for our region. But there are still more western
solutions on the table, such as the 0z NAM. Upper air changes on
most of the models were quite subtle, but as has been discussed,
downstream output will be contingent on very minor changes occurring
over the next 24 hours. Today's trends will certainly be important.
With all of the shortwave energy at least over land now, sampling
will be steadily improving, and "big picture" model solutions should
start converging in the next 12 to 24 hours.
Ultimately, there was not a whole lot of change to the gridded
forecast. Likely PoPs are included for most of the area, a bit lower
across the far west. In terms of timing, it still looks like there
will be some light snow around during the day on Friday, with the
main event Friday night through at least midday Saturday. Snow
remains the favored ptype. There may be just a bit of brief mixing
near the coast at the onset Friday evening, with Friday high
temperatures in the mid to upper 30s, but if there is precipitation
to be had, it will fall as snow. We will have to watch the winds as
well, especially around the back side of the strengthening storm as
it starts to depart. A closer track would also mean higher winds and
potential for blizzard conditions near the coast. We will be closely
monitoring tidal levels at the coast as well, as astronomical tides
will be on the rise heading into the weekend.
&&
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A multi-day stretch of quiet weather is expected in the wake of the
potential storm. Saturday night and Sunday could be quite cold,
especially if the storm is stronger and drags more Canadian air in
behind it as it pulls away. May even need to monitor for wind chill
headlines Saturday night, but a lot of that will depend on what
happens with the storm. A moderating trend should commence next
week, with a chance for one of our better warm-ups in awhile towards
mid next week as a Western trough, eastern ridge pattern becomes
established. Dry conditions are expected with high pressure in
control.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Through tonight...VFR through tonight. Occasional scattered clouds
today (generally 5000-8000 feet). Northwest wind 5 to 10 kt,
increasing to 7 to 15 kt with occasional gusts to 20 kt this
afternoon. Winds will become light and variable after sunset. High
confidence.
Thursday...VFR with winds becoming southerly or southwesterly 5 to
10 kt during the afternoon. High confidence.
Outlook...
Thursday night... Mainly VFR. Light snow possible late mainly near
and north of RDG and ABE. Winds light and variable. High confidence.
Friday (daytime)... Mainly VFR initially. Sub-VFR possible by
afternoon with light snow overspreading the area. Winds mostly light
and variable. Moderate confidence.
Friday night-Saturday... Sub-VFR is possible, especially east of
PHL, as a winter storm may affect the region. Winds should turn
northeast at 5 to 10 kt Friday night. Winds on Saturday will back to
north then northwest and increase, with strong winds possible. Low
confidence owing to uncertainty in the potential winter storm.
Should that storm track close enough to the coast, significant
aviation weather impacts would be probable.
Saturday night-Sunday... VFR conditions returning by early Saturday
night. Northwest flow with speeds gradually diminishing. High
confidence.
&&
.MARINE...
Winds have continues to gust at SCA levels through the morning,
it now appears that the winds will remain 20 to 25 knots into
the afternoon. The SCA flag will continue until 4 PM.
Tonight...Northwest winds 10 to 20 kt are forecast, with a
gradual shift to north or even northeast late tonight. Seas of
2 to 4 feet are expected.
Thursday...Variable winds in the morning will become southerly
during the afternoon. Speeds should generally be 10 kt or less,
though they will be increasing late in the day. Seas at or below 3
feet are anticipated.
Outlook...
Friday... Sub-SCA conditions expected. Light rain or snow possible.
Friday night-Sunday... Marine headlines are likely as a strong
coastal storm passes offshore. Winds and seas will ramp up quickly
Friday night. Depending on the strength and track of the coastal
storm, gale or storm force winds will be possible. Winds will
increase from the northeast on Friday night, then increase further
and shift to north then northwest on Saturday. Heavy rain or snow
possible. Seas building to 6 to 8 ft, possibly greater.
Sunday night-Monday... Diminishing winds and seas with conditions
returning to sub-SCA levels.
