Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
1234 PM EST Fri Jan 14 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure rapidly intensifying well offshore today will
track toward the Canadian Maritimes. Meanwhile, strong arctic
high pressure builds into our region through Saturday before
shifting offshore into Sunday. On Sunday, a strong storm will
move from the Southeast northward across the Mid-Atlantic while
remaining inland. The low will then move toward New England
later in the day Monday. High pressure then returns into early
next week, followed by a cold front later Wednesday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1230 PM, an upper analysis showed the axis of an upper-level
trough just about to our east and closing off east of the lower Mid-
Atlantic. At the surface, a cold front is slowly working its way
eastward across the area with initially some lowering of the dew
points with it. Deepening low pressure is centered well offshore of
the lower Mid-Atlantic with its western cirrus canopy over portions
of New Jersey. This low will continue to track to the north-
northeast. Increasing subsidence west of the offshore low is
resulting in a good amount of sunshine across much of the area. Some
lower clouds have been around west of I-95, however these are
tending to dissipate now given downsloping/drying flow. Northerly
winds have turned gusty (peak gusts mainly 30-35 mph) as boundary
layer warming is being maximized ahead of the much stronger cold air
advection, which is enhancing the depth of the vertical mixing. For
this update, made some tweaks to the hourly sky, temperature, dew
point and wind grids. Some areas mainly in the coastal plain are
nearing 50 degrees therefore high temperatures were nudged upward a
little. Cold air advection is noted in the 925 mb and 850 mb
analysis, however this will become even stronger later this
afternoon which is when temperatures will start falling.
An arctic front moves through the region this evening, with very
cold/dry air advecting into the area through tonight. Temperatures
drop off drastically, with lows dropping to near zero in the
southern Poconos, otherwise, in the single digits across the
northern zones and in the teens elsewhere.
Winds diminish, but remain elevated through the night. Wind
chills late tonight will overwhelmingly be in the single digits
to as low as 10 below. For Carbon, Monroe, and Sussex (NJ)
counties, wind chills will range from 15 below to 20 below. A
Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect for those counties for
late tonight into Saturday morning.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Arctic high pressure will remain anchored across southeastern Canada
and slide slowly across New England and eventually offshore Saturday
through Sunday. This will be associated with mid-level shortwave
ridging passing across the same areas. Thus, a modest pressure
gradient will remain in place across the area Saturday with a stout
10-15 mph wind continuing and gusting to around 20-25 mph at times,
but it'll be noticeably less breezy than Friday. However, the
continuing cold advection will result in surface temperatures
struggling to climb into the mid 10s and 20s. It'll be a very cold
and raw day with wind chills maxing out near zero north of I-78 and
in the single digits and 10s elsewhere. Temperatures Saturday night
should be a bit colder than Friday night in most locations, but the
wind will be diminishing to around 5 mph or less. So the wind chill
won't be as much of a factor, but slightly more ideal radiational
cooling conditions will setup with the much weaker gradient,
especially in the typical cold spots and sheltered areas up north
and across the coastal plain. Lows should be in the single digits to
the mid 10s.
Attention remains on the strong storm system expected to impact the
region late Sunday through early Monday. A closed off mid-level wave
will pass from the lower Mississippi Valley Saturday night east
across the interior Southeast Sunday and then north across the Mid-
Atlantic Sunday evening. This will result in an intensification of a
surface low across the Southeast as it moves north across the Mid-
Atlantic. The consensus in the medium range guidance continues with
a storm track well inland, reaching eastern Pennsylvania and new
Jersey by daybreak Monday. Meanwhile, strong, cold, and dry arctic
high pressure will be anchored across New England. A strong pressure
gradient will result across our region late Sunday.
This system will have potential to yield multiple hazards across our
entire forecast area. The initial threat will be a period of snow
and/or sleet at the onset of precipitation, especially along and
north of the I-95 corridor. This still appears to occur Sunday
evening from south to north. Accumulating snow and/or sleet is
anticipated during this time (perhaps even locally heavy at times),
but a changeover to rain is expected to race northwestward as strong
warm air advection ramps up. A transition to rain near I-95 is
anticipated around 10 PM near I-95 (give or take a couple hours).
The 850 mb line appears to reach near or north of I-78 by 2 AM or
so, thus marking a transition to sleet or rain depending on the
depth of the cold air, even all the way into northwest New Jersey
and the southern Poconos.
Given the very robust warm advection with this system, I do not
anticipate that we will see any "significant" accumulations
from this system owing to the amount of sleet mixing in pretty
much everywhere. That being said, I do expect to realize a few
hour window where conditions will be favorable for accumulation
generally from along the I-95 corridor and northwest resulting
in a few inches of snow and sleet. As for the forecast totals,
kept totals conservative and broad (again given the expected
mixing). Something like 1-3" near I-95 and closer to 3-4" total
farther north with perhaps some localized high totals in the
higher terrain. Given the timing of this accumulating snow and
sleet and the transition to rain nearly everywhere, significant
travel impacts are not expected at this time, but untreated or
unplowed roads will become snow covered for a few hours Sunday
evening or overnight.
The second and possibly more significant hazard of concern will be
strong onshore winds. Within the strong easterly pressure gradient
that develops Sunday evening, guidance remains in fairly good
agreement with onshore (easterly) 925 mb winds 50-60 kts inland to
around the I-95 corridor and 60-70+ kts over the ocean, but
obviously there is a question as to how much of this mixes to the
surface. We've seen this kind of setup a couple times within the
past few years though. Nevertheless, this will likely lead to a
period of windy conditions as the LLJ sweeps across the area from
south to north Sunday night, especially along the coasts, across the
coastal plain, and across the higher terrain farther inland.
Thinking gusts of 40-50 mph are possible, with gusts near 60 mph
possible near the coasts during this timeframe. We'll continue to
monitor this potential of impactful wind gusts. Continued to trend
the forecast winds and gusts upward a bit given that confidence is
increasing on this potential.
A couple additional potential hazards to mention are fresh water and
coastal flooding. Fortunately, this system will be moving fairly
quickly, but storm total QPF amounts of near or over one inch are
expected across the coastal plain and especially near the immediate
coast where low-level convergence in the onshore flow will likely
lead to enhanced rainfall. If this falls fast enough in areas where
precipitation has changed to rain, we could realize a localized
excessive rainfall flooding threat. Lastly, our coastal flooding
forecasts are just coming into reach of this storm currently, but we
do know that the astronomical tides will be running above normal due
to the full moon on Monday. With a period of strong onshore winds,
this could result in some coastal flooding issues, especially along
the ocean front of New Jersey.
&&
.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A strong gradient will return on the backside of the low pressure
system as it pulls away on Monday. We could see another period of
windy conditions with this, and thus trended the wind forecast a bit
higher Monday through Tuesday. Temperatures will be near normal
values.
A couple weak, clipper-like systems may impact the area Tuesday
through Thursday of next week, but these both appear to be fairly
dry. An arctic front Thursday will usher in another period of below
normal temperatures.

.MARINE...
Low pressure well offshore of the Mid-Atlantic coast will track
farther out to sea today. A tight pressure gradient over the
waters and increased flow will be in place. Gales will develop
especially later this afternoon and this evening as an arctic
front moves across the waters. A Gale Warning remains in effect
through this evening. A Small Craft Advisory will likely be
needed after the Gale Warning expires.
With strong winds continuing late tonight and air temperatures
dropping to the 20s, along with elevated seas, freezing spray is
likely. Went ahead and issued a Freezing Spray Advisory for all
waters for late night and early Saturday morning.
Outlook...
Saturday through Saturday night...Advisory conditions likely
lingering through at least the evening across the ocean waters.
Gusts of 20-25 kts can be expected with seas 4-6 feet.
Sunday...Sub-advisory conditions expected through early afternoon,
then easterly winds and seas begin to build to advisory or possibly
gale force gusts by the early evening.
Sunday night...A period of east to southeasterly storm force wind
gusts possible across all waters along with moderate to heavy rain.
Seas building to 9-14 feet across the ocean waters and very
rough waters on Delaware Bay.
Monday...Southwesterly gale force wind gusts probable across most
waters. Seas remaining elevated around 10 feet for much of the day
as well. The winds and seas will begin to diminish overnight.
Tuesday...Advisory conditions probable with seas around 4-6 feet and
westerly winds gusting around 25 kts.
Wednesday...Advisory conditions possible with seas around 3-5 feet
and southwesterly winds gusting around 20-25 kts.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...
A very dry and cold airmass will be in place Saturday and there will
be a breeze. North-northwest winds will gust up to 25 mph before
diminishing some during the afternoon. Very low dew points will
result in the relative humidity values falling to 20-25 percent
during the afternoon especially. The combination of winds and
the very dry air may lead to some increased risk for fire
spread.
