Area forecast discussion, Jan 13, 12:10 AM EST, 3 hours 29 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1210 AM EST Thu Jan 13 2022 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure develops off the southeastern U.S. coast Thursday before rapidly intensifying as it lifts to the northeast Friday. High pressure then builds into our region Saturday. An intensifying low pressure system is expected to move up the East Coast Sunday and Monday with high pressure following for Tuesday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... Temperatures are trending on the warmer side so far tonight in response to the increased high clouds. Made some adjustments to these for the first half of the overnight. Plenty of cirrus sliding across the area this evening in response to strong westerly flow aloft and a system to our north. An upper- level trough swinging across the Midwest, Great Lakes and adjacent Canada is forecast to gradually amplify eastward through Thursday. At the surface, high pressure will continue to shift farther offshore and a cold front or stationary front will be draped from northern New England southwestward to near Chicago through tonight. The front looks to shift a little southeastward during Thursday. Meanwhile, a weak surface trough to our west should move into our area later tonight and Thursday morning. Our sensible weather looks to be on the quiet side overall. High level clouds are expected to continue through tonight, with even some lowering forecast especially from about the I-95 corridor north and west. Some guidance hints at some snow showers into the Pocono region late tonight and early Thursday morning, which looks to be tied to the incoming weak surface trough well ahead of the sharpening upper-level trough well to our west. While the forcing looks to be on the weak side as does the available moisture, several pieces of guidance hint at some snow showers in the far northwest zones. For now just kept the mention of flurries for parts of northeastern Pennsylvania and far northwestern New Jersey for late tonight and early Thursday morning. As the airmass continues to modify along with some added cloud cover, temperatures will not be as cold tonight although many places are expected to drop back into the 20s as winds go light and variable to calm. For Thursday, much more cloudiness should be around in response to the gradually amplifying upper-level trough to our west. This trough will result in cyclogenesis off the Carolina Coast by late Thursday afternoon. We are between this system and the incoming trough axis to our west, which will result in more cloudiness, light winds and temperatures getting into the 40s for most of the region. Other than some flurries possible in the far northwest zones early, the day is anticipated to be dry. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/... The main focus through this period is the off shore low Friday into Friday night. For the deterministic guidance, there was a slight shift northwest with the track of the low. It still looks like most of the precipitation stays off the coast, but if this trend continues, the precipitation shield may brush right along the coast. Any precipitation should be very light, so not expecting any significant impacts. Then the focus will be on the arctic cold front progressing through the region Friday evening. In the wake of that cold front, dangerously cold wind chills will be possible, especially in the southern Poconos and NW NJ. Even for the rest of the region, wind chill values near or below zero will be possible late Friday night into Saturday morning. The cold air will linger through the day on Saturday as temperatures across the region will stay below freezing across the region, and for areas north and west of the fall line temperatures should stay in the teens. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Prior to the arrival of the next low pressure system, conditions will remain cold and dry Saturday night and into the early part of Sunday. Later on Sunday, the next low pressure system will likely bring precipitation to the region. Guidance continues to suggest that the low will remain inland as it moves northward ahead of the negatively tilting trough. However, there is still uncertainty over the exact track of the low. As a result both rain and snow precipitation types remain possible for the area. After the low and precipitation exit the region later on Monday, high pressure will build back into the region. Conditions Tuesday into Wednesday are likely to be dry with seasonable temperatures. && .AVIATION /05Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight...VFR. Light and variable winds (locally calm) at most terminals. High confidence. Thursday...VFR. Light and variable winds, becoming locally east or southeast 5 knots or less. Moderate confidence. Outlook... Friday through Saturday night...Mostly VFR conditions expected, though localized MVFR ceilings will be possible especially Friday morning. Northwesterly and northerly wind 10 to 20 kt, decreasing to 5 to 10 kt Friday night and Saturday night. Moderate confidence. Sunday...Mostly VFR through the day. Conditions are expected to lower to at least MVFR, and localized IFR Sunday night as precipitation (some of which could be a wintry mix) moves into the region. Northeasterly and easterly winds 5 to 15 kt, with higher gusts. Low confidence on most aspects of the forecast. Monday...Continued MVFR and localized IFR conditions continue as the precipitation continues in the region for at least the first part of the day. We may see improvement to VFR late in the day. Winds shift from easterly to westerly early on Monday, with speeds of 5 to 15 kt. Locally higher gusts possible. Moderate confidence on the overall pattern, low confidence on details. && .MARINE... Winds will continue to diminish well below advisory thresholds overnight as the pressure gradient remains weak. For Thursday, the conditions are then expected to be below Small Craft Advisory criteria due to much lighter winds. Outlook... Friday...Increasing concern that we will see widespread gale conditions across the waters with northwesterly flow. Saturday...Winds should subside below 25 kt Saturday morning, though elevated seas above 5 ft may linger on the coastal waters. Sunday...After a lull in the winds late Saturday and Saturday night, winds shifting out of the northeast and eventually east will increase during the day on Sunday, with widespread SCA conditions, and some gale conditions possible. Monday...Winds shift out of the west, but widespread SCA conditions and localized gale conditions remain possible. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... PA...None. NJ...None. DE...None. MD...None.
