.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will gradually build east from the Ohio Valley
for today and Wednesday. A significant storm system will
develop well to the west and affect our weather Thursday and
Friday bringing mainly rain with strong winds. Following that,
arctic air and gusty winds will affect the weather for the
upcoming holiday weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
835 AM Update...Some minor changes were made to the gridded
forecast based on the latest obs and trends. We increased sky
cover for this morning over our NW Zones (Berks County northward
into the southern Poconos) and also made some minor adjustments
to hourly temperatures through early this afternoon based on
latest obs (which are generally running a little warmer than
forecast). Previous discussion follows below.

Latest analysis depicts low pressure near eastern Nova Scotia
and high pressure centered over southwestern Pennsylvania. In
between, we remain in an area of northwesterly flow, though the
gradient has diminished. Aloft, the closed low remains near the
surface low near Nova Scotia, while an upper ridge axis is over
the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. A shortwave is rotating around
the closed low and trails west across New England and New York
state with a potent vorticity lobe.

The aforementioned shortwave and continuing northwest flow are
helping to bring stratocumulus southeastward into our
northwestern zones, particularly the Poconos, but also parts of
NW NJ and the Lehigh Valley/Reading areas. This will likely
continue at times thru the day, but further south, sunshine will
prevail this morning. This afternoon, a weak shortwave near the
Mississippi Valley presently will head eastward over our area,
spreading some mid-level clouds to diminish the afternoon sun.
With the cold Canadian air remaining in place and no surface
features of significance, dry weather will prevail, but
temperatures, presently in the 20s for many, will not be able to
crack 40 for most, except in the Delmarva and a few other
warmer locales such as the NJ shore and a few urban centers.

High pressure moves eastward overhead tonight. This should make
tonight the coldest of this stretch, with lows down near 20 for
most. Some late night mid and high clouds associated with
another weak shortwave may disrupt ideal radiational cooling a
bit, keeping some areas out of the teens, but it'll be very
close.

High pressure remains in control Wednesday, with light winds and
partly to mostly sunny skies. As with today, a passing weak
shortwave aloft may spread some mid and high clouds into the
area, but no chance of precip whatsoever. Highs may tick just
slightly warmer compared to today, a degree or two perhaps, but
not much difference really.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
The overall synoptic pattern for our upcoming storm remains
largely unchanged with the latest suite of guidance. An
impactful extratropical cyclone is forecast to develop across
the Midwest and rapidly intensify through the day on Thursday
and Friday accompanied by a strong upper trough and very
impressive synoptic scale dynamics. Rain, very windy conditions,
and quite the arctic cold blast will be the talking points for
the area to close out the week.

The period will start with high pressure centered over
Maine/Nova Scotia with the back end of an upper ridge overhead.
The high will slowly push further east as the deepening low
pressure that will be responsible for our late week storm ejects
out of the Rockies and tracks northeast through the Midwest.

With the surface high in place to our north and east,
antecedent cold air can often be a concern for precipitation
type at least at the onset of a storm. Temperatures are expected
to rise through the first half of the day, and likely preclude
impactful snow/mixed wintry precipitation. There is still some
disagreement on when precipitation will begin on Thursday, and
the earlier it starts, the higher the chance for some form of
wintry mix at onset. Some mix of snow/rain/freezing rain is
briefly possible at precipitation onset, and have included this
in the forecast, but overall impacts from any snow or ice are
not expected to be significant. The most likely area for this to
occur would be north and west of the I-95 corridor.
Precipitation will begin from south to north as warm air
advection/overruning overspreads the area, accompanied by a
surging low-level jet and potent upper trough. Precipitable
water values are progged to be near or just above 1 inch at this
time which is >90th percentile for the day. The overnight
Thursday-Friday morning period could see some heavier rain rates
and potential for localized flooding concerns. Rain will
continue into the day on Friday as strong mid-level height falls
(~40-50 dam in 24 hours) continue with the approaching upper
low. The very potent surface cold front is expected to pass
through Friday afternoon, and will bring with it the possibility
for a gusty low-topped line of showers as well as some limited
instability is progged. Behind the front, dry air will build and
likely put an end to the precipitation. That said, some
scattered snow showers are still possible on the backside, but
confidence is not high in enough lingering moisture for a whole
lot in the way of appreciable coverage. Left a slight chance of
snow in the forecast for now. A general 1-2 inches of rain is
expected with this event.

Regarding winds, advisory-criteria (46+ mph) continue to look
quite possible for most of the area on Friday. Another surge of
the aforementioned low level jet will likely occur on Friday as
the main area of low pressure and upper trough pass through. As
we will likely reside in the warm sector of the low for part of
the day on Friday, enhanced mixing will aid to increase gusts at
the surface where an already tight pressure gradient and strong
mid-level height falls/cold air advection will result in very
windy conditions. The isallobaric wind component associated with
both the rapid pressure decrease ahead of, as well as increase
behind, the front will too aid in elevated winds at the surface.
While it is too early to get much into specifics, NBM EXP 50th
percentile max 24 hour wind gust guidance indicates values
between 40-50 mph possible inland and even exceeding 50 mph
along and especially off the coast.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Saturday will look nicer than Friday, but we'll have a tale of
two seasons temperature-wise between the days. Ensembles suggest
the upper low will strengthen with associated height anomalies
to -30 dam and drive an arctic blast of cold air into the region
behind the front. Because the surface low is expected to track
across the Great Lakes, the coldest air will wrap around into
the Plains and the Midwest, but we certainly will see well below
normal temperatures for the weekend. A decent spread in
temperatures across ensemble guidance still exists for the
weekend, as it does with NBM percentiles, but consensus is that
highs might not reach out of the mid 20s for most with lows in
the low-mid teens (single digits possible for the Poconos and
Lehigh Valley). Winds will relax a bit for the weekend, but
blustery conditions still look likely as the pressure gradient
holds tight. The winter coat will be a necessity for any
Christmas Eve outdoor plans.

Into the beginning of the next work week, ensembles and cluster
means still hold below average 500 mb heights with temperatures
moderating but still remaining below average.

KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight... VFR. Mainly SKC. Light winds. High confid.

Wednesday...VFR. North to northeast winds around 5 knots or
less. High confidence.

Outlook...

Thursday...Sub-VFR conditions likely with windy conditions and
rain. A mix of rain/snow/freezing rain is possible in the early
afternoon mainly at KABE/KRDG. Easterly winds 10-15 knots with
gusts to 20 knots. Low level wind shear possible. Moderate
confidence in restrictions, low confidence in precipitation
type.

Friday...Sub-VFR conditions likely with strong wind gusts and
rain. Low level wind shear possible. Southeasterly winds 15-20
knots with gusts to 35 knots in the morning becoming
southwesterly in the afternoon. Low level wind shear possible.

Saturday-Sunday...SCA conditions likely. Westerly winds 15-25
knots with gusts to 30 knots. Seas subsiding to 6-8 feet on

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
While light winds and high pressure will keep anomalies low at
present, an easterly wind is forecast to develop in our region
for the period from Wednesday night into Thursday night. This
will push water up against our coast, resulting in building
anomalies. The wind is expected to veer toward the south late
Thursday night, before a cold front arrives on Friday. We are
anticipating an increase in tidal departures during the period,
especially as wind speeds increase from late Thursday into
Friday morning.

We are concerned with Friday morning's high tide cycle due to
the elevated astronomical tides associated with the new moon and
the buildup of water along our coast. There is potential for
widespread minor flooding at that time, with some areas of
moderate flooding possible. Some guidance actually brings major
flooding to parts of Raritan Bay, but we believe the guidance
is seeing more wind than there actually will be, which is
artificially inflating the projected anomalies. That said, we
will continue to monitor the trends in guidance over the coming
days.

.CLIMATE...
While the potential of a white Christmas has diminished
significantly, the potential of a very cold Christmas remains.
Highs are currently projected to get no higher than the 20s both
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This is a decent cold snap for
any December, as the last time we had two or more days in a row
with highs in the 20s at PHL was back in 2017, 5 years ago.
However, for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day itself, its more
notable, as we've been on quite a stretch of warm Christmases of
late. The last time the high on Christmas Day itself stayed
below 30 was back in 2000, when the high was only 27. The last
time both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day stayed below 30 was
back in 1989, when the high Christmas Eve was only 21 and the
high Christmas Day was only 28. So, this year's Christmas
weekend has the potential to be the coldest in over 30 years.
