.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will slide east over the region through Thursday.
What is currently Tropical Storm Nicole is expected to lift out
of the southeastern U.S. as it interacts with another low and
strong cold front approaching from the northwest. This will
bring periods of rain and gusty winds Friday and Friday night.
Saturday will remain mild but windy. In the wake of the cold
front, much colder air should settle in over the region Sunday
into next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
One more day of tranquil and dry conditions is expected today as
the high shifts further off the coast. The main noticeable
difference from Wednesday is that winds will begin to shift
around to southeasterly as we get sandwiched between the high to
our east, Nicole to our southwest, and the other closed low
approaching from the west. In the mid and upper levels, this
will be the last day the ridge is centered over our region as it
will start to weaken later today. High temperatures will be
in the 50s and 60s, with some areas along the coastal plain even
making it to 70.
By tonight, we'll see increasing clouds starting in the evening.
It still appears as if the first rain won't get into our region
until well after midnight, but we should start to see some rain
entering, especially for areas south of Philly, by day break.
&&
.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
This time period will feature the most active and impactful
weather of the next 7 days, as we watch 'Nicole' head north and
northeastward, generally tracking along or just west of the
spine of the Appalachians Friday and Friday night. The trend
continues to be toward lessening the rainfall amounts across our
area, but that will continue to give us some potential for gusty
winds and isolated severe thunderstorms.
From a rainfall standpoint, showers may start moving in as early
as Friday morning, especially down toward the Delmarva. Overall
the rainfall has continued to trend lighter from previous runs,
with total amounts now looking like an inch to 2 inches from the
I-95 corridor northwestward, with the higher amounts likely
restricted to the Poconos. Lesser amounts will be found toward
the coast. That said, the rain could be locally/briefly heavy at
times, and may be quite variable from location to location due
to a more convective nature as we head later in the day Friday
and Friday night. Even though widespread flooding concerns,
particularly river flooding, does not look like a threat, with
precipitable water values highly anomalous for this time of
year (around 1.75" to 2"), and dewpoints at least in the mid to
upper 60s, the threat for heavy rain with any convection is
something that will need to be watched. Rain will end quickly,
probably by early Saturday morning, followed by an overall dry
day.
Wind might be the most impactful aspect of this system in some
ways. With a strong low-level jet only a couple thousand feet
above the surface of 50 to 55 kt out of the south-southwest
Friday afternoon through Friday night, any stronger showers or
thunderstorm will be capable of mixing down some stronger gusts.
Areas closer to the coast will be more likely exposed to general
southerly winds, so that still appears to be the area more
likely to need a Wind Advisory for general wind gusts in the 40
to 50 mph range. Farther inland, we are expecting more in the
30 to 40 mph range, but again, could be briefly/locally higher
with any storms. An inversion and shallow mixed layer will
prevent much of the strongest winds from mixing down away from
the coast otherwise. As the main area of low pressure passes by,
and some cold advection commences aloft as winds shift to the
west, mixing will improve, so there may be a period for more
widespread gusty winds even through Saturday morning. Winds will
ease later in the day Saturday, and it will be quite mild, but
still an overall windy day.
Severe weather is the big wild-card and the one potential
impact that we will have to keep the closest eye on, even if it
looks like a fairly low probability given the lack of
instability, especially of the surface-based variety. After an
initial wave of warm-advection rain goes by on Friday, from
Friday evening into the overnight there will be a window where
at least some degree of elevated CAPE will be present. Much of
the guidance is showing a prominent dry slot during this period,
but that may allow any isolated convection to be more discrete
and potentially stronger. There will definitely be a high degree
of low-level shear and helicity, so that some stronger cells
will be a possibility, capable of either mixing down some
stronger winds aloft very briefly in/around any storms, or even
spinning up a brief tornado. SPC only has us in a (5%) marginal
risk at this time; warranted given the lack of instability.
&&
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A quickly passing shortwave could reintroduce precipitation chances,
mainly for eastern New Jersey and Delaware, Sunday afternoon and
evening. Recent guidance has trended drier with this feature, and as
mentioned in the previous forecast, this makes sense with a dry
atmosphere in the wake of the cold front passage that should
preclude the majority of the precipitation. Can't rule out a few
showers with the rather potent shortwave progged, though I would be
surprised if coverage was any more than isolated. For this reason,
held with the low end slight chance PoPs along the DE and NJ coasts.
The main story of Sunday will be the introduction of a colder and
drier air mass with high temperatures on the order of 10-15 degrees
lower than Saturday as strong cold advection ensues in the wake of
the front/remnants of Nicole. Lows Sunday night look to fall at or a
few degrees below freezing, potentially introducing a widespread
freeze and put an end to the growing season in areas that have not
had a freeze to this point.
Leading into next week, mid-level ridging is forecast to build for
at least Monday and some of Tuesday and keep us dry with a
northwesterly flow. It's unlikely that ridging holds on for long as
ensembles indicate a digging trough across the Midwest on Tuesday
with associated surface low development and PVA downstream.
Deterministic guidance follows this general evolution as well,
albeit with continuing inter- and wintry- model variability.
General consensus is that precipitation chances may return
sometime mid- week. Aside from the precipitation chances, it
looks as though we may see temperatures that actually feel like
November. Highs through the period look to be at or a few
degrees below climatological normals.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Through 12Z...VFR under a mainly clear sky. Some patchy fog may
develop but confidence is too low at this time to include in
the TAFs. Variable wind less than 5 knots. High confidence on
overall pattern, low confidence on any fog occurrence.
Today...VFR with increasing cloud cover, particularly in the
afternoon. Winds starting light and variable, but should
eventually settle out of the southeast by this afternoon. High
confidence.
Tonight...VFR likely, with a mid level (4 to 6 kft) ceiling
developing. some -RA may move in to KPHL, KILG, KMIV, and KACY
by 12Z. Winds mostly light favoring SE or E direction. Moderate
confidence.
Outlook...
Friday and Saturday...Likely to have MVFR and IFR conditions
for much of this period, especially from 18Z Friday to 09Z
Saturday, due to both low ceilings and visibility restrictions
in periods of heavy rain. Southeasterly winds of 12 to 25 kt
with gusts 30 to 40 kt at times Friday, abruptly shifting to
Westerly and Northwesterly late overnight Friday night into
Saturday 10 to 20 kt with gusts to 30 kt or so, especially in
the morning. Moderate confidence on the overall forecast, but
low confidence on timing and wind speed details.
Sunday - Monday... VFR. Northwesterly winds 10-15 knots,
decreasing to 5-10 knots overnight. Moderate confidence.
&&
.MARINE...
Seas will remain elevated on our southern ocean waters through
tonight. For this reason, Small Craft Advisory remains in effect
here until 6 AM Thursday. Otherwise, expect that winds and seas
will be below Small Craft Advisory levels through Thursday.
Outlook...
Friday and Saturday...We discussed with neighboring offices once
again regarding a Gale Watch for the Friday afternoon through
Friday night period, with strong southerly winds shifting to
westerly overnight. We have wind gusts near 35 to 40 kt in our
forecast over the ocean and even into lower DE Bay much of that
time period, but there is some question if an inversion may
limit how much stronger winds reach the surface. Given the
fast-moving low passing to our west and a tight surface pressure
gradient though, be prepared for gales this time period, and we
will see how the forecast adjusts going forward. Seas will build
8 to 10 feet or so over the ocean from the south-southeast
Friday night, then linger while slowly lowering on Saturday,
with westerly short-period seas picking up on Saturday.
Sunday - Monday...SCA conditions possible Sunday with seas
diminishing for Monday. Northwesterly winds 15-20 knots. Seas 4-6
feet on Sunday and 3-4 feet on Monday.
