.SYNOPSIS...
The remanants of Ian will linger across the eastern US into the
weekend as strong high pressure will be centered north of the
Great Lakes. This pattern will bring an extended period of wet
and breezy conditions across the region through the weekend and
into early next week. The remnant low of Ian is then forecast to
finally depart offshore on Wednesday. High pressure with drier
and more seasonable conditions will build back into the area on
Thursday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High clouds have overspread most of our area this morning,
putting an end to our extended period of sunny weather, with the
exception of perhaps northwest NJ up into the Poconos where some
dim sunshine may linger through midday. This forecast update
focused mainly on the timing and amounts of rain through
Saturday. Currently radar and sfc obs indicating light rain may
just be entering southern Delaware late this morning, but will
spread northward into southern NJ this afternoon, reaching PHL
possibly by sunset. Overall the main change with this update was
to speed up the progression of the steadier rain later today and
tonight, but then reduce amounts on Saturday as that batch of
rain moves out. The exception will be toward the NJ coast,
especially central and northern portions, but much of our area
even back into DE and PA will remain overcast and drizzly. That
said, overall total amounts through Saturday remain about the
same, with an inch along the I-95 corridor, lesser amounts to
the northwest, and up to 2 inches in southern DE and south NJ
coast. It will be a rather gloomy and raw day Saturday even
where the rain tapers off, with still some drizzle around and
northeast breezes. Northeast winds will generally range from 10
to 15 mph today, however, winds will be stronger along the
coast, ranging from 15 to 20 mph with gusts of 25 to 30 mph.
Those winds will actually ease back noticeably along the DE and
S NJ coast, but will remain stiff 15 to 20 mph N of ACY. Temperatures
will run several degrees below normal today, generally in the
mid and upper 60s. Similar temps are expected Saturday, but
several degrees cooler from the I-95 corridor northwestward.

Localized poor drainage flooding is possible in some urban areas
overnight, especially where drains may get clogged from fallen
leaves. But widespread flooding is not anticipated, given how
dry it has been. For southern Delaware and extreme southeast New
Jersey, although poor drainage flooding may be a bit more
widespread, still not expecting widespread flooding or flash
flooding.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
There should be a break in the rainfall from Saturday afternoon
through Saturday evening until the next round of rain
approaches Saturday night through Sunday morning as weak low
pressure develops over the Mid-Atlantic and tracks east of New
Jersey. There is some uncertainty as to how much rain will fall
during this time as models are indicating the possibility of a
dry slot over the area with the heaviest rain offshore. However,
bands of rain will spread back towards the coast by Sunday
afternoon. Showers continue to linger into Sunday night.

With that low just off the Jersey Shore, easterly winds will
increase to 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph throughout the
area, however, right along the shores, winds will be as high as 20
to 30 mph with 35 to 45 mph gusts. Will continue to monitor if a
Wind Advisory is needed, but for now, winds look to fall short of
Advisory criteria.

Overall, QPF totals from through Sunday night will generally
average 1 to 2 inches of rain along and north and west of I-95,
and from 2 to 4 inches of rain south and east of I-95, with as
much as 3 to 5 inches of rain in southern Delaware and into
extreme southeast New Jersey.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The surface low just east of the Delmarva will remain close
enough to the coast to bring rain and strong north to northeast
winds to areas along and south/east of the I-95 corridor into
Wednesday. Coastal flooding is still a good bet around times of
high tide given the onshore fetch. To the north/west of the
I-95 corridor, high pressure over the Great Lakes will result in
dry and cool conditions. Surface high pressure returns to the
area early on Thursday, followed by a cold front passing
through the region on Friday.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Today...VFR. Thickening high clouds and gradually lowering ceilings
but ceilings stay above 10K ft. Some 030-050 BKN ceilings around
KACY, may try to expand westward toward MIV this afternoon. NE
to ENE winds around 10-15 kt, gusting near 20kts at KPHL and
KILG and 20-25 kt southern NJ and DE. Moderate confidence.

Tonight...Conditions lower to MVFR this evening as showers begin
to move north. Heavier rain will move in after midnight with IFR
ceilings gradually coming in from south to north. Expect reduced
visibilities as well during moderate to heavy rain. East to
northeast winds around 10-15 knots overnight with gusts 15-25
knots possible. Timing for moderate to heavy rain looks to be
somewhere between 03z-06z at KACY/KMIV, 04z-08z at the I-95
terminals, and 08z-10z at KRDG/KABE. Confidence is high on gusty
northeast winds persisting, though moderate on timing of
MVFR/IFR ceilings/visibilities.

Outlook...

Saturday through Saturday night...Rain tapers off from west to east
by Saturday afternoon, but another round of rain is possible
Saturday night. MVFR/IFR CIGs throughout the period. E winds 10 to
20 kt with gusts up to 25 kt. Moderate confidence.

Sunday through Sunday night...Periods of rain throughout the day.
MVFR/IFR conditions. E winds 15 to 20 kt with 20 to 30 kt gusts,
stronger at KACY. Moderate confidence.

Monday...Mainly VFR ceilings, however rain may introduce periods of
MVFR at times. Northeast winds 10-15 kts with gusts of 20-25 kts,
stronger at ACY. Moderate confidence.

Tuesday and Wednesday...Mainly VFR. Northerly winds 10-15 kts
with gusts of 20-15 kts possible. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
With wind gusts at Buoy 9 already starting to reach 33-35 kt
this morning, have begun the Gale Warning for Lower Delaware
Bay and the Delaware and southern NJ ocean waters now, which
will peak tonight as wind gusts increase to 35 to 40 kt. SCA
otherwise on northern NJ and upper Delaware Bay, though that may
need to be upgraded off Ocean County, zone 451. VSBY restrictions
in rain tonight and Saturday. Isolated thunderstorms possible
as well into Saturday.

Gales may end earlier on Saturday for the southern waters on
Saturday, but stronger winds will linger near and north of
Barnegat Light Saturday afternoon and evening. Otherwise expect SCA
conditions then on tap with a lull through Saturday night.

Outlook...

A Gale Watch will likely be needed for Sunday for widespread 35
to 40 kt gusts.

VSBY restrictions in rain and isolated to scattered thunderstorms
through the weekend.

Monday...Gales likely. Northeast winds 20-30 kts with gusts up to 40
kts. Seas 8-12 feet. Winds and seas will begin to subside overnight.
A chance of rain.

Tuesday and Wednesday...Small Craft Advisory conditions likely.
North winds around 15-20 kts with gusts up to 30 kts. Seas 7-10
feet. A chance of rain.

Rip Currents...

Onshore flow strengthens with northeast winds around 20-25 kts. The
period will increase as well getting near/over 8 seconds. With a
medium/long period northeast swell, and breaking waves around 3 to 5
feet, there is a HIGH risk for the development of dangerous and life
threatening rip currents at New Jersey and Delaware ocean
beaches.

Due to prolonged onshore flow and high surf, an elevated rip
risk is likely to continue through at least mid week next week.

Given prolonged elevated risk of rip currents, we are currently
evaluating if we will extend the issuance of the SRF beyond what
was scheduled to be the final SRF forecast this morning.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
There is an increasing risk for minor tidal flooding beginning
this afternoon for the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean coasts
of Delaware and on Saturday for the Atlantic Coast of New
Jersey. Northeasterly winds will be the primary driver of the
increasing tides. Peak water levels are currently expected to
occur on Sunday producing minor coastal flooding. Minor
approaching moderate flooding is possible on Sunday and Monday
particularly in Sussex County, Delaware and Cape May County, New
Jersey. The coastal flooding threat will occur primarily with
the afternoon/evening high tide cycle but spotty minor
conditions will be possible with the overnight high tides.

While some spotty minor flooding is possible in other tidal
areas today, Sussex County, Delaware and Cape May County, New
Jersey should experience the most widespread minor flooding.
Therefore, a Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for the
late morning high tide today for these zones.

Additional advisories or watches will be needed for the coming
tide cycles, so be sure to monitor the latest forecasts.

Tide levels are expected to remain below minor flooding thresholds
for the tidal Delaware River and the upper eastern shore of
Chesapeake Bay.
