Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure across eastern Canada today will extend down into our
area before retreating northward tonight. Low pressure moves into
the Ohio Valley Friday with a warm front lifting northward across
parts of the Mid-Atlantic. This low tracks off the Mid-Atlantic
coast later Friday night and Saturday then stalls for a time before
drifting south and southwestward to the Southeast coast during the
first half of next week. Meanwhile, high pressure builds
southwestward into the Mid-Atlantic from the Canadian Maritimes next
week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Surface high pressure will build down from the northwest and north
for today, before the axis of the ridge slides to our east tonight.

There was a fair amount of stratocumulus over eastern Pennsylvania,
and northern and central New Jersey early this morning. The clouds
are forecast to shift southward as dry air begins to arrive from the
north. While the clouds should erode somewhat during the day, they
will likely not entirely dissipate. It appears as though we will see
generally more sunshine as the day progresses in eastern
Pennsylvania, and northern and central New Jersey, than in southern
New Jersey, Delaware and eastern Maryland.

A light northerly wind this morning is anticipated to work its way
around to the southeast and south at most location during the
afternoon. Temperatures are expected to be seasonable with highs
mainly in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

High clouds are forecast to begin arriving from the west late today.
Mid level clouds and a deck of stratocumulus will follow late
tonight. It appears as though the leading edge of the rain
associated with low pressure approaching from the west should arrive
in eastern Pennsylvania late tonight.

The wind is expected to be light and variable for tonight. The
clouds cover will likely prevent temperatures from falling below the
upper 40s and lower 50s.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Summary...Periods of rain along with strong onshore winds.

Low pressure in the Ohio Valley Friday will reorganize off the Mid-
Atlantic coast into Saturday and remain there as an upper-level
trough becomes closed off from the main flow aloft. This storm will
be a slow mover given the system aloft becoming cut off, and this
combined with strong high pressure over eastern Canada will result
in strong onshore winds.

For Friday, an upper-level trough is forecast to move into the Ohio
Valley. A warm front will become better defined to our south.
Strengthening 850 mb warm air advection within a low-level jet
initially of about 30 knots will be moving into our area especially
Friday afternoon. Model guidance shows an east to west zone of
increasing 850 mb frontogenesis in response to convergence and
strong thermal advection. As a result of increasing forcing for
ascent, rain is expected to develop and expand eastward during the
day Friday. It may start across the northern half of the area with
some development farther south through the day. The flow in the very
low levels will be off the ocean, however it veers quite a bit just
above the surface. The model forecast soundings indicate mainly
elevated instability developing later Friday and especially Friday
night mainly across Maryland, Delaware into far southern New Jersey.
There is enough instability forecast overall for the potential of
some thunder, therefore maintained a slight chance of thunder. The
veering wind profile will support some supercells, however all of
our area may remain north of the surface warm front and therefore
any convection would be elevated. The greater chance of some severe
storms looks to be just to our south and southwest but this will
need to be watched given the warm front and veering wind profiles
that are forecast.

Periods of rain will continue Friday night as low pressure
reorganizes off the Mid-Atlantic coast as the upper-level trough
closes off. The aforementioned frontogenesis should remain in place
and start to pivot southeastward through Saturday. Some of the rain
could be heavy at times through Saturday, and rainfall totals should
average 1-2 inches across the area. Any flooding should be limited
given much of the rain should be spread out, we have not had much in
the way of widespread rain for a few weeks now and green-up is well
underway.

Northeast winds will increase especially starting Friday night and
continuing right through Saturday night. Model guidance shows an
easterly low-level jet near 50 knots late Friday night and Saturday.
Low pressure to our south and strong high pressure centered well to
our north will result in a tightening pressure gradient. This
coastal storm will result in the strongest winds along the coast
with these lowering some as one goes inland. Looks like wind gusts
should peak between 40-50 mph along the coast and 30-40 mph inland.
A Wind Advisory may be needed mostly for Saturday and Saturday night
for the coastal zones. With the combination of strong onshore winds
and building waves, there is an increasing concern for beach
erosion. Temperatures will be rather cool Saturday given periods of
rain and a strong onshore wind. The rain may transition to some
showers by later Saturday night as the low starts to push south some
as more of an influence from Canadian high pressure starts to arrive
from the north or northeast.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Summary...Unsettled conditions subside as low pressure shifts east
and then south allowing high pressure to build in from the north.

Synoptic Overview...A closed low is forecast to be parked right over
the Mid-Atlantic Sunday, then it should gradually shift east then
southward through Monday. It may then weaken some as it turns
westward and moves into the Southeast U.S. This evolution will take
surface low pressure off the northern Mid-Atlantic coast Sunday
southward and then westward as it weakens. As this occurs, ridging
to the north results in high pressure building across eastern Canada
which then extends down into our region with time.

For Sunday...A robust closed low remains off the Mid-Atlantic coast,
however it should start to drift southeast or south through Sunday
night. This will take surface low pressure away from the coast,
however high pressure centered well to our north with offshore low
pressure will maintain a gusty northeasterly low-level flow across
our region. Some showers to start Sunday mainly south and east of I-
95 with drying slowly working in from the north or northeast. Much
of the guidance has the surface dew points tumbling into the 30s
especially for the northern half of the area with increasing
influence from Canadian high pressure. That southward push of drier
low-level air will determine how much shower activity is leftover on
Sunday and the extent of the cloud cover. A notable breeze will
continue especially closer to the coast. As a result, some beach
erosion may still occur when combined with rough surf.

For Monday through Wednesday...Our sensible weather will continue to
be dominated by the closed low as it lurks offshore along with
surface low pressure. Surface high pressure is forecast to build
into northern New England with it also extending down into our area
with time. This will result in increasing subsidence and the
entrainment of drier air, therefore improvements are expected. We
will likely still be dealing with a northeasterly breeze, although
this should be diminishing some with time as the overall pressure
gradient slowly relaxes as the flow weakens. As the closed low
starts to turn southwest and west toward mid-week and move into the
Southeast U.S., we may have some showers develop Tuesday and
Wednesday as the low-level flow starts to turn from the east and
shortwave energy circulates around the closed low. Temperatures
should start to rebound some overall as the airmass starts to modify
north of the gradually weakening closed low.

.AVIATION /08Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...Local MVFR ceilings through about 12Z, otherwise generally
VFR. North wind 5 to 10 knots, becoming southeast to south. Medium
confidence.

Tonight...VFR with an increase in cloud cover. Rain and MVFR
conditions arriving from the west, generally after 08Z. Variable
wind 5 knots or less. Medium confidence.

Outlook...

Friday and Saturday...MVFR/IFR conditions with periods of rain. East
to northeast winds 5-10 knots Friday, increase to 15-25 knots Friday
night and Saturday. Wind gusts increase to 25-40 knots mainly Friday
night and Saturday, with the strongest gusts at ACY. Low-level
wind shear possible. Low confidence on the details.

Saturday night...The conditions may improve to VFR as rain tapers to
some showers. Northeast winds 15-25 knots with gusts 25-35 knots.
Low confidence.

Sunday and Monday...Mainly VFR. East-northeast winds 10-20 knots
with gusts up to 25 knots. Wind gusts may diminish for a time Sunday
night and again Monday night especially inland. Low confidence if
low ceilings occur.
