What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale watch went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale watch went out at Jan 1, 1:47 AM EST, 1 hour 19 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 1, 1:47 AM EST, 1 hour 19 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
147 AM EST Sat Jan 1 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will lift north on Saturday, followed by a strong
cold front on Sunday. High pressure will build across the Mid-
Atlantic Monday through Wednesday. Another system is expected to
move through the area later next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
145 am update: Dense fog is now developing in far southeast
Pennsylvania and adjacent portions of northern Delware. A dense
fog advisory has been issued for these areas until 6 am.
Thereafter, rain may begin to improve visibilities somewhat.

100 am update: Dense fog has developed in the southern Poconos,
with webcams indicating very low visibility on portions of I-80
and I-380. Have issued a dense fog advisory for Monroe and
Carbon Counties through mid-morning.

Low pressure was centered near Chicago this evening with a
frontal boundary extending eastward along the New York and
Pennsylvania border area to southern New England. The boundary
will meander in that vicinity overnight as the low tracks
eastward across the southern Great Lakes.

The system will spread rain into our region from the west
overnight. Meanwhile, increasing low level moisture will result
in the development of areas of fog and drizzle. The fog may
become dense near the coast.

The wind will remain light overnight and temperatures are
expected to stay fairly steady.

Periods of rain will continue across the region throughout the
day Saturday. Warm air advection will be underway, and it will
be quite warm for the start of January, but high temperature
records will largely be safe. Highs top off in the low 50s in
the southern Poconos, and otherwise in the upper 50s to low 60s
across southeast Pennsylvania and most of New Jersey. Delmarva
will top off in the mid to upper 60s.

Another wave of low pressure develops over the Midwest and
tracks to the north and east during the day. This looks to bring
a heavier band of rain to the region late in the afternoon.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Rain will continue through Saturday night and may be heavy at
times (especially earlier in the period) as the best fgen
forcing strengthens as the wave of low pressure passes to our
west. Even with heavier rain, we are not expecting any flooding
concerns at this time. With clouds and rain across the region
and continued southwest flow (and warm advection ongoing),
expect overnight temps to be extremely mild and warm. Lows only
drop into the 50s through much of the region with some mid to
upper 40s across the northern zones. Areas across southern
Delaware and nearby Maryland may stay closer to 60 overnight.

The rain should come to end early Sunday as dry air starts to
filter in aloft. Most of Sunday should then remain dry until the
cold front nears the area and another round of showers is
expected. Skies will remain quite overcast but we will still
have the southwest flow across the region and temperatures will
be able to rise back into the upper 50s to lower 60s, though to
be fair we have a pretty good starting point with the previous
night having been so warm.

The cold front is expected to arrive Sunday afternoon/evening,
with another round of showers across the region. Behind the
front, winds will turn to the northwest and become quite gusty
through the night. With the colder air starting to advance into
the area in the strengthening northwest flow, there is a chance
that we see some showers switch over to snow as the
precipitation starts to come to an end. As is usually the case,
it will depend on how fast the colder air arrives and if we
still have the precipitation around when it does get here. Kept
a mention of rain/snow showers for Sunday night into early
Monday morning but the chances for accumulation at this point
look pretty small.

With colder air arriving, it will be considerable colder Sunday
night and overnight lows will drop into the 20s through much of
the region with teens across the higher elevations of northeast
PA and northwest NJ. With the gusty winds it will feel even
colder and wind chill values will be into the teens through
portions of the Lehigh and Delaware valleys and through central
and northern New Jersey. The southern Poconos and parts of
northwest New Jersey may see wind chill values into the single
digits.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
High pressure will build in for Monday and remain across the
region through Wednesday.

Monday will be a chilly day though the gusty winds of the night
before will be gradually subsiding. The cold air that started
filtering in the night before hangs around and keeps us below
normal for highs with temperatures struggling to break out of
the low to mid 30s. However, it should be a dry day for us with
plenty of sunshine.

Temperatures Monday night will also be cold, dropping into the
teens to low 20s. With the winds weakening across the region it
won't have quite that same biting cold as the night before,
though it will still feel pretty cold outside.

The high remains across the region for Tuesday and Wednesday
and with the air mass modifying and warming a little each day,
we should see daytime highs start to bounce back up a bit.
Tuesday will be near normal across the region with highs in the
mid to upper 30s to lower 40s. Wednesday will be even warmer
with highs back into the mid 40s to lower 50s across the region.

Models show a strong low pressure system starting to make its
way through the Ohio Valley Thursday and moves towards New
England Thursday night into Friday. Based on current model
projections, this could be another all rain event with warm air
pushing through the region with the coldest air ties up to our
north and west. Plenty of time to work on the details of this
storm over the coming days.

&&

.AVIATION /07Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This morning...IFR/LIFR CIGs and sub-VFR VSBYs expected. Locally
dense fog may develop, especially at the Philly terminals and at
ACY/MIV, especially around daybreak. Rain will be moving in
from the west this morning as well, which will likely bring some
variations in CIGs/VSBYs to the terminals. Light and variable
winds. Moderate confidence.

This afternoon...IFR CIGs and mainly MVFR/IFR VSBYs are
forecast to continue. Bouts of rain are likely, and cannot rule
out a rogue lightning strike as well (especially south of PHL).
Southwest LLWS is expected to develop late in the day. Winds
mostly light and variable, but may develop a predominant
southerly component (especially at ACY). Low confidence with
VSBYs; moderate confidence with CIGs/winds/LLWS.

Tonight...IFR/LIFR restrictions likely with rain also likely at
times. Some isolated lightning strikes may be observed with the
heavier precipitation. Winds mostly light and variable, though
south winds may develop at MIV/ACY and potentially ILG/PHL as
well. LLWS likely during at least the evening hours at the
Philly terminals, MIV, and ACY. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Sunday...MVFR/IFR conditions likely to start Sunday with
improvement expected towards the afternoon, with the potential
for VFR to occur. Southwest winds 5 to 10 knots becoming west to
northwest Sunday afternoon/evening and increasing to 10 to 15
knots Sunday night. Gusts around 20 to 25 knots possible Sunday
night. Moderate confidence with lower confidence on timing of
categorical changes.

Sunday night...Improving conditions with VFR expected to
prevail through the night. Northwest winds around 10 to 15 knots
with gusts up to 25 knots. Moderate confidence.

Monday...VFR. Northwest winds around 10 to 15 knots with gusts
up to 25 knots, decreasing late in the day and becoming light
and variable overnight. High confidence.

Tuesday through Wednesday...VFR. South to southwest wind around
5 to 10 kt. High confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
145 am update: The dense fog advisory was expanded to include
upper Delaware Bay based on nearby surface observations.
Previous discussion follows...

With dew point readings slowly rising above the water
temperatures, dense fog is expected to be an issue on our
coastal waters again overnight into Saturday morning. We have
issued a Marine Dense Fog Advisory.

Winds and seas will remain below Small Craft Advisory
conditions overnight through Saturday.

Outlook...

Saturday night through Sunday...SCA conditions expected. Seas
build to 4 to 6 feet Saturday night then become 5 to 7 feet on
Sunday. Increasing southwest winds 15 to 25 knots with gusts up
to 30 knots, decreasing some through the day on Sunday.

Sunday night through Monday...SCA conditions expected. Seas 4
to 6 feet. Northwest winds 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to 30
knots. Gale force gusts possible Sunday night.

Monday night through Wednesday...Sub-Small Craft Advisory
conditions expected on the area waters.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
This weekend's new moon is leading to high astronomical tides,
with departures of 0.5-1 ft necessary for gauges to reach minor
flooding. Though the pattern is not overly favorable for
widespread flooding, this weekend's system combined with weak
onshore flow preceding it will be enough to produce rounds of
minor flooding on Saturday morning and Sunday morning.

For Saturday morning, widespread minor flooding is expected on
the entire Atlantic coast of New Jersey and Delaware, as well as
portions of Raritan Bay and lower Delaware Bay. Coastal flood
advisories have been issued for these areas for the Saturday
morning high tide.

Additional advisories will likely be required for Sunday
morning's high tide for many of these same areas.

The wind is not expected to become northwest, pushing water
away from the coast, until after Monday morning's high tide. As
a result, another round of minor flooding is anticipated for
Monday morning.

At this point, spotty minor flooding appears to be most
probable for upper Delaware Bay and the tidal Delaware River,
though we will continue to monitor potential for more widespread
flooding through the weekend. Flooding is not currently
expected on the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay through this
weekend.
