Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
Issued by National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC
354 PM EST Tue Nov 8 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will slide east over the region through Thursday.
What is currently Tropical Storm Nicole is expected to lift out
of the southeastern U.S. as it interacts with another low and
strong cold front approaching from the northwest. This will
bring a period of rain Friday into early Saturday. In the wake
of the cold front, much drier and colder air should settle in
over the region Sunday into Monday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/...
Latest surface analysis shows a 1045 hPa high centered to the
north of Lake Superior. This expansive high's influence extends
across much of the eastern half of North America. Locally, we've
had northerly winds out ahead of the high transporting cooler
and much drier air into the region today. Satellite imagery
shows mostly sunny skies across the entirety of the forecast
area, with just a few high cirrus clouds lingering. Temperatures
have climbed into the 50s and lower 60s beneath the mostly
sunny skies.

The aforementioned surface high will weaken slightly overnight
to around 1040 hPa as it drifts southeastward and becomes
centered over southern Quebec and the Adirondacks by daybreak.
Mostly clear skies are expected overnight. Enough of a pressure
gradient should persist overnight to keep most locations from
decoupling. The Poconos will be the closest to the approaching
high, and as a result the most likely to go calm. The light
winds and low dewpoints (in the low 20s) should preclude the
formation of frost in most locations where the growing season is
still active. However, a little patchy frost can't be ruled out.
Lows overnight will range from the mid 20s in the Poconos, to
around 40 along the coast.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will continue to slowly drift southeastward
tomorrow, becoming centered over Long Island and southern New
England by tomorrow evening. Mostly sunny skies are expected
across most of the the area. A few clouds may work in from the
Atlantic in the afternoon as low level easterly flow starts to
develop on the south side of the surface high. Highs tomorrow
will be in the mid- upper 50s for most, with upper 40s in the
Poconos. Although high pressure will shift offshore, the surface
ridge axis will become centered over the forecast area tomorrow
night. When coupled with mostly clear skies, conditions should
be ideal for radiational cooling. Lows will drop back into the
30s and lower 40s for most.

Upper level ridging will remain overhead on Thursday as surface
high pressure continues to drift out to sea. Southerly flow will
develop on the backside of the high, which will start to
transport warmer air into the area. Skies will start out mostly
sunny, but clouds will be on the increase through the afternoon
and into Thursday night. High temperatures on Thursday will be
in the 60s for most, with upper 50s in the Poconos, and near 70
over southern DE. Conditions should remain dry through most of
the night, but a stray shower can't be ruled out just prior to
daybreak.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Afternoon update: No major changes to the thinking in the long
term period with the 12z guidance cycle. The most notable trend
was a northwest trend in the track of a coastal system on
Sunday. As a result, slight chance/chance POPs have been
introduced across much of the forecast area. If trends continue,
these may need to be upped further in subsequent forecast
cycles.

Overview:

Focus remains on the Friday into Early Saturday period with the
evolution of Nicole and the closed low (and associated cold
front) approaching from the NW. Beyond this period, dry but cold
conditions are expected.

Details:

Friday and Saturday...The biggest changes with this forecast is that
there was a noticeable northwestward trend in the track of Nicole,
and a trend of a faster interaction between Nicole and the closed
low, and consequently a continued faster trend with the precip
clearing out of our region. The interaction with the two systems is
now expected to occur while Nicole is southwest of our region.
Regardless, there are still a few possible hazards for our region,
including heavy rain, winds, and thunderstorms. Details of each of
these hazards follow:

Rain/heavy rain: With the faster trend, the main period of rain now
looks to be Friday afternoon into early Saturday morning. In these
situations, typically the heaviest rain occurs left of the center of
the low. Therefore, the previously mentioned northwestward shift of
the track could have big implications on if our region sees heavy
rain or not. At this point there is still a broad range of solutions
with the swath of heavier QPF being anywhere from the coastal plains
to NW of the Poconos. Thus, can't at this point nail down an area
that has a higher risk for flooding. Additionally, as mentioned by
the previous shift, the faster this system moves out, the less
likely we will be to see significant flooding potential, so the
faster trend could also have implications on this hazard.

Winds: Given all the uncertainty with the track of Nicole and the
timing of the interaction between the two systems, there remains
quite a bit of uncertainty with wind potential. That being said,
there are two periods of concern. First on Friday, areas east of the
track of Nicole could see gusty southwesterly winds. Then there will
be potential for gusty northwest winds behind the cold front on
Saturday. At this point, most guidance (except the ECMWF) show winds
staying well below wind advisory criteria. However, I am suspicious
that guidance is too low, especially with the southwesterly flow on
Friday as there could be a strong southwesterly jet just above the
boundary layer, which even with inefficient mixing could result in
gusts above 40 mph. As with the heavy rain threat though, there is
still too much uncertainty to highlight any specific area that could
have a higher risk of a strong wind threat.

Thunderstorms: Unquestionably instability will be limited, and
thus the primary mode of precipitation should be stratiform rain.
However, if any elevated instability develops, I can't
completely rule out an isolated severe thunderstorm in what
could be a classic low CAPE/high shear environment. This is the
hazard that at least at this point I am the most uncertain about
and has the lowest probability.

Sunday and Monday...In the wake of the cold front mentioned above,
guidance is depicting temperatures 5 to 15 degrees below normal,
with highs in the 30s and 40s, and lows in the 20s and 30s. If these
trends hold, it is likely that there will be a widespread freeze
across the region either Saturday night or Sunday night depending on
the timing of the cold front.

&&

.AVIATION /20Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...VFR. Winds north around 10 to 15 kts with gusts up to 20
to 25 kts possible. High confidence.

Tonight...VFR. Winds northeasterly near 5 kts for the more
northwestern zones and around 5 to 10 kts for the more southeastern
zones. High confidence.

Outlook...

Wednesday through Thursday night...VFR conditions. Winds mostly
light and variable. Moderate confidence.

Friday and Saturday...Likely to have MVFR and IFR conditions for
much of this period, especially from 18Z Friday to 12Z Saturday. Due
to both low ceilings and visibility restrictions in periods of heavy
rain. Southeasterly winds Friday, abruptly shifting to Westerly and
Northwesterly on Saturday. Wind speeds could be 15 g 25 KT with
gusts to 35 KT, but low confidence on the wind speed forecast.
Moderate confidence on the overall forecast, but low confidence on
timing and wind speed details.

&&

.MARINE...
Today...SCA conditions are in place for all coastal areas through
tonight. SCA conditions are in place for Delaware Bay today but
should see sub-SCA return by the start of tonight. 4 to 7 feet waves
are likely throughout the day for the coastal waters with winds near
25 knots and gusts near 30 knots. 15 to 20 knot winds are possible
on Delaware Bay today.

Outlook...

Wednesday...On the Delaware Bay, winds and waves should stay below
SCA criteria. On the Atlantic coastal waters, seas should gradually
subside below SCA criteria by late Wednesday or Wednesday night.

Thursday...Winds and seas should stay below SCA criteria.

Friday and Saturday...The risk for SCA conditions, and even gale
conditions continues to increase through this period due to what is
currently Subtropical Storm Nicole interacting with a low pressure
system approaching from the west. Expect southwesterly winds on
Friday, abruptly shifting to westerly or northwesterly Friday night
or Saturday. Gale force gusts will be possible with both periods.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
A dry air mass will be in place for today with a northerly wind of
10 to 15 MPH gusting to 20 to 25 MPH. Relative humidity values are
forecast to drop into the 20 to 30 percent range this afternoon.
Most of our region has not received much rainfall over the past
several days and fuel moisture levels have fallen to around 7 or 8
percent.
