.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will through today before sliding east of the
region tonight. A significant storm system will develop well to
the west and affect our weather Thursday and Friday bringing
mainly heavy rain with strong winds. Following that, arctic air
and gusty winds will be in place for the upcoming holiday
weekend. High pressure builds into the area for early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
1000 AM...For the morning update, only real change was to adjust
hourly temperatures down a few degrees in spots for the late
morning into early this afternoon as they're a bit colder than
previously forecast. Otherwise, quiet today. Previous discussion
follows below.

For our weather today and tonight, its the calm before the
storm. With the high remaining nearby, expect clear to partly
cloudy skies with winds generally light and variable much of the
day. Some high clouds will likely pass by as a weak shortwave
passes, but overall, the most tranquil day of the forecast
period is today, with temperatures only slightly below normal.

Tonight, high pressure slides east of the area and the system to
the west strengthens. This will help develop an onshore flow
which will begin to spread moisture and milder air inland. Lows
will be early, with rising temperatures late at night, but still
expected to get below freezing in most of the area. As the
onshore flow picks up moisture, low clouds may develop near the
coast and then move inland, while at the same time high clouds
from the strengthening system to our west will begin
overspreading the region. So, certainly we're looking at a
pretty cloudy end of the night. But, do not expect any precip to
reach us until after dawn.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
The increased trend in rainfall totals mentioned by the
previous forecast remained consistent with the latest guidance,
and no major changes were otherwise warranted. An impactful
extratropical cyclone is forecast to develop across the Midwest
and rapidly intensify through the day on Thursday and Friday
accompanied by a strong upper trough and very impressive
synoptic scale dynamics. Heavy rain and very windy conditions
will unfold Thursday and Friday with an arctic blast beginning
Friday afternoon on the back side of a cold front.

A cold surface high pressure centered over Maine/Nova Scotia
will shift eastward as a deepening low across pushes into the
Mid Atlantic region. Some mix of snow/rain/freezing rain is
briefly possible at onset across the Lehigh Valley and Poconos
as the surface high provides antecedent cold air at the surface,
but overall impacts from any snow or ice are not expected to be
significant. The cold air may hang on in the Poconos for just a
bit longer, but by the afternoon, expect the precipitation type
areawide to be all rain. Precipitation will begin from south to
north in the afternoon as warm air advection/overruning
overspreads the area, accompanied by a surging low-level jet and
potent upper trough. Precipitable water values are progged to
be near or just above 1 inch at this time which is >90th
percentile for the day. The overnight Thursday-Friday morning
period could see some heavier rain rates and potential for
localized flooding concerns. Rain will continue into the day on
Friday as strong mid-level height falls (~40-50 dam in 24 hours)
continue with the approaching upper low. Latest forecast
guidance has a very potent surface cold front pushing through
sometime late Friday morning with the boundary nearing the
coastline by early afternoon. Along the front, we could have the
possibility for a gusty low-topped line of showers as well as a
few rumbles of thunder with some limited instability progged.
With regard to rainfall, WPC has maintained the Marginal
Excessive Rainfall Outlook for the I-95 corridor and points
north and west for Thursday and Thursday night. Greatest
concerns will be around I-78 and points north and west where the
current forecast is for widespread 2-3 inches of rain. Across
southeast PA, southern NJ, and DE, a general 1-2 inches is
expected.

Behind the front, dry air will build in and likely put an end
to the precipitation rather quickly. With that said,
deterministic guidance is favoring a quick burst of snow on the
backside, especially across the higher elevations. Confidence is
not very high in terms of coverage, and where snow does occur,
accumulations look to be just a couple tenths of an inch and
impacts directly related to snow are expected to remain limited.
The main story behind the front will be temperatures plummeting
quickly Friday afternoon, dropping into the teens for overnight
lows across much of the region with single digits around the
Poconos. Some roads and other untreated surfaces that remain wet
from the day's rainfall may experience some freezing.

Regarding winds, advisory-criteria (gusts 46+ mph) continue to
look quite possible for most of the area on Friday. Another
surge of the aforementioned low level jet will likely occur on
Friday as the main area of low pressure and upper trough pass
through. As we will likely reside in the warm sector of the low
for part of the day on Friday, enhanced mixing will aid to
increase gusts at the surface where an already tight pressure
gradient and strong mid-level height falls/cold air advection
will result in very windy conditions. The isallobaric wind
component associated with both the rapid pressure decrease ahead
of, as well as increase behind, the front will likely produce
the strongest wind gusts on either side of the frontal passage
Friday afternoon. The combination of a prolonged period of
higher wind gusts with a freshly saturated ground may result in
favorable conditions for some downed trees/power outages.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Saturday and Sunday are expected to remain dry, but a fresh
arctic airmass will be in full control through the weekend.
Highs on Saturday and Sunday are only expected to reach the 20s
with mid teens across the Poconos. Overnight lows both nights
will be in the low to mid teens with single digits again in and
around the Poconos. Winds will still remain elevated through the
weekend, though not quite as extreme as Friday, but enough to
combine with the cold temperatures to produce potentially
dangerous wind chill values especially Friday night into
Saturday morning. Wind relaxes a little on Sunday, but we can
still expect it to feel like the low to mid teens Sunday
afternoon before dropping again overnight with wind chills again
at or below zero. Overall, a very cold and blustery Christmas
Eve and Christmas Day are in store.

Into the beginning of the next work week, guidance is showing
slightly warmer temperatures, but overall remaining below
average for the end of December. Ensembles indicate the
anomalously low 500 mb heights slowly improving with surface
high pressure returning dry conditions.

.AVIATION /15Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...VFR. Light and variable winds, becoming north to
northeast then east or southeast near 5 knots. The wind may
actually remain light enough to result in a more variable
direction during the day. High confidence.

Tonight...Primarily VFR. Winds becoming east to northeast 5-10
kts. Guidance is starting to bring in a low MVFR stratus deck
late at night, starting around KACY and spreading inland toward
the I-95 terminals by dawn, so have cigs dropping significantly
late. That said, no vsby restrictions or precipitation expected.
Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Thursday...Sub-VFR conditions likely developing through the day
with strong wind gusts and rain. A mix of rain/snow/freezing
rain is possible in the early afternoon mainly at KABE/KRDG.
Easterly winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots during the day
increasing to southeast winds around 15 knots gusting 25-35
knots Thursday night. Low level wind shear possible. Moderate
confidence in restrictions, high confidence in winds, low
confidence in precipitation type.

Friday...Sub-VFR conditions likely with strong wind gusts and
rain. Some light snow showers possible in the afternoon.
Southeasterly winds 15-25 knots with gusts 35-40 knots in the

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
An easterly wind is forecast to develop in our region for the
period from late today into Thursday night, pushing water up
against our coast. The wind is expected to veer toward the south
late on Thursday night, before a cold front arrives from the
west around midday on Friday. We are anticipating an increase in
tidal departures during the period, especially as wind speeds
increase from late Thursday into Friday morning.

We remain most concerned with Friday morning's high tide cycle
due to the elevated astronomical tides associated with the new
moon and the buildup of water along our coast. It will take
positive departures of only 0.6 to 0.8 feet to begin minor
flooding. It appears as though there will be widespread minor
flooding at that time in the tidal areas of Delaware and New
Jersey. Minor flooding is also possible along parts of the tidal
Delaware River and the upper eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay.

Based on the forecast wind direction and speed, the veering
pattern suggests the greatest water buildup in our region along
the northern part of the New Jersey coast. As a result, we have
issued a Coastal Flood Watch for the counties of Monmouth and
Middlesex. It is in effect on Friday from 4:00 AM until noon.
Latest guidance as of early Wednesday still supports this
solution, so no adjustments were made.

We will continue to monitor the trends in guidance over the
coming days and make any necessary adjustments and additions to
our coast flooding headlines.

.CLIMATE...
While the potential of a white Christmas has diminished
significantly, the potential of a very cold Christmas remains.
Highs are currently projected to get no higher than the 20s both
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This is a decent cold snap for
any December, as the last time we had two or more days in a row
with highs in the 20s at PHL was back in 2017, 5 years ago.
However, for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day itself, its more
notable, as we've been on quite a stretch of warm Christmases of
late. The last time the high on Christmas Day itself stayed
below 30 was back in 2000, when the high was only 27. The last
time both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day stayed below 30 was
back in 1989, when the high Christmas Eve was only 21 and the
high Christmas Day was only 28. So, this year's Christmas
weekend has the potential to be the coldest in over 30 years.
Something to think about if you are planning any outdoor
services.

All this having been said, its gonna be tough to match the
coldest Christmas eve and Christmas Days on record, which for
much of our area dates back to 1989 and 1983. Particularly in
1983, we had some of the coldest weather we ever see in our
region, with many areas below zero at night and not even
reaching 10 above during the day.
