What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this fire weather watch went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this fire weather watch went out at Apr 28, 3:46 AM EDT, 13 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Apr 28, 3:46 AM EDT, 13 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
346 AM EDT Thu Apr 28 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain in place well north of the area with a
stacked low pressure system centered offshore of Nova Scotia through
Saturday. This will result in prevailing breezy and dry conditions
along with gradually moderating temperatures. Low pressure will
cross the Great Lakes on Sunday eventually bringing the potential
for showers to the Mid-Atlantic along with warmer temperatures. This
will start a generally much more unsettled weather pattern through
much of next week with multiple systems potentially impacting the
area.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
No significant changes with the late evening update. Short wave
trough has slid east of the region. Precipitation has mostly
dissipated. It does appear that guidance continues to be too
fast in clearing out the mid level clouds, but we are seeing
clearing generally south of a Philly to AC line already.

The other considerations with temperatures tonight is the dry
air in place and the surface winds. Across the region, even in
areas that have seen the light precipitation, dew point
temperatures remain in the 20s. Winds are not likely to go
completely light thanks to a rather tight pressure gradient
remaining in place, but speeds should decrease with a typical
nocturnal trend after sunset due to limited mixing.

All of this makes for a very complicated temperature forecast
overnight. At this point, the areas most likely to see a freeze
are the southern Poconos (Carbon and Monroe Counties), but the
growing season hasn't started there yet. I think the clouds
should linger slightly longer for NW NJ, which should be enough
to keep temperatures just above freezing. However, for Berks,
western Chester, and the Lehigh Valley, slightly earlier
clearing, combined with terrain effects which make decoupled
winds more likely, increase my confidence that these areas will
have lows right at or just below freezing. Therefore, issued a
freeze warning for that portion of SE PA. Did not issue any
frost advisories as the combination of dry air and winds
staying up in other locations makes frost less likely.

For Thursday, the closed low will only edge slightly further
east, meaning we'll stay in the blustery NW flow. By late
Thursday, the surface and upper low become vertically stacked
with low pressure center weakening and pressure gradient
loosening. One last trailing short wave trough may swing through
the region, but it is unlikely to result in any precipitation -
even sprinkles -thanks to the dry air in place.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY/...
For Thursday night, may have one more night of temperatures near
freezing, but at this point, forecast is for temperatures just
above freezing.

Northwesterly flow continues for one more day on Friday. Friday
looks equally dry to Thursday, but with a little less wind.

Mid level short wave ridge starts to build closer on Saturday,
though the main axis will still remain west of the region for
one more day. Even still, increasing 1000-500 mb thicknesses
will mean a modest warming trend with highs mostly in the 50s
and 60s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Generally quiet and warmer weather Sunday into early next week
as heights aloft rise and sfc ridging builds in. A weak warm
front may bring a few showers Sunday night into Monday. Showers
and t-storms possible next Tue with a more significant area of
low pressure.

&&

.AVIATION /08Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Through Thursday..VFR conditions. NW winds through the period,
generally 15 to 25 kt with higher gusts. Winds may decouple and
become lighter between 03 and 12Z, especially at KABE (due to
terrain effects), but should increase again by 15Z. High
confidence.

Outlook...

Friday and Saturday...VFR. NW wind 5 to 15 kt. High confidence.

Sunday and Monday...Starting VFR, increasing chance for MVFR or
even IFR with showers. Winds light and variable becoming S and
SE 5 to 10 kt. Low confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
SCA conditions will persist through Saturday morning under a
tight pressure gradient. Winds remain below SCA Saturday
afternoon into early next week.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
A multi-day stretch of dry and breezy conditions is expected today
and Friday, gradually easing up by Saturday. We are likely to be at
or near meteorological red flag thresholds both today and Friday,
especially today when the criteria will certainly be met all across
the region. Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts of 25 to 35
mph will be likely today, decreasing somewhat on Friday but only
modestly. Dew points will mix out significantly during the daytimes,
with minimum RH values of 15 to 25 percent both Thursday and Friday.
Relatively poor RH recoveries are expected Thursday night also, with
max RH values on either side of 50 percent. Limiting factors for
this event will be the relatively cool temperatures as well as the
increasing progression of the spring green-up. However, state
partners have generally confirmed that fine fuels are expected to be
receptive across our area. As a result, a Red Flag Warning has been
issued for most of the area today. A Fire Weather Watch was issued
for our MD counties, with decision on a warning or SPS pending
additional coordination with state partners.

A Fire Weather Watch also remains in effect for our NJ and PA
counties on Friday, and warning upgrades will likely be needed. In
DE and MD, sustained wind criteria are less likely to be met on
Friday, but there is a good chance at least a Special Weather
Statement will be required due to the increasingly dry and still
breezy conditions. Fire weather concerns should subside over the
weekend, especially by Sunday, as winds decrease. The risk may
remain somewhat elevated on Saturday due to warming temperatures and
continued dry conditions, but winds will be lighter.
