Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 847 PM EST Tue Dec 6 2022 .SYNOPSIS... A series of low pressure systems will move through the region through Wednesday. A cold front will then pass the area Wednesday night, with high pressure building into our area Thursday. An unsettled pattern begins on Friday, with an area of low pressure sliding by to the south Friday night and Saturday. Low pressure will linger offshore through the rest of the weekend, with the unsettled pattern continuing into early next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Latest analysis shows a warm front pushing slowly northwestward across the region, with the boundary approximately stretching across the Poconos and the Reading area. This front loops southward around the Piedmont of the Carolinas, then lifts back northward on the west side of the Appalachians, then back southwest across the Ohio Valley toward a wave of low pressure near Arkansas. Aloft, an upper level ridge axis extends along the southeast coast with a broad trough over the north- central US and Canada. In between, several weak disturbances are embedded in the fast southwesterly upper flow. The warm front has become more or less stationary across the area so a continuation of the rains, drizzle, low clouds and fog will continue overnight since a strengthening low-level jet will interact with the strong moisture advection and warm advection/isentropic lift. Overall, expect amounts tonight to be between a half inch and an inch, with highest amounts likely across northern parts of the forecast area such as northern New Jersey and the Lehigh Valley, with lighter amounts southwards into southern New Jersey and the Delmarva. Best forcing departs early Wednesday, leaving behind a very moist air mass. This likely result in drizzle and fog, possibly dense. As there will be little air mass change or wind on Wednesday as we wait for low pressure to pass to our east and the front to drop back southward as a cold front, it will be tough to get much break in the clouds, and a misty drizzle may persist a fair amount of the day. While the steadiest rain will be behind us, additional upper disturbances may still bring periods of light rain, especially across the Poconos closer to the passing surface low pressure. With plenty of clouds and occasional rain/drizzle along with lingering mist/fog, temps likely don't budge much, with most areas topping in the 50s to perhaps right around 60. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... A cold front will move through on Wednesday night with some scattered light showers near the front moving through for the first half of the night. The area will be drying out overall, and any showers overnight should move off the coast by the early morning hours on Thursday. Even with the passage of the front, temperatures will stay mild as cold advection lags well behind the boundary. Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 40s, which is around 10+ degrees above normal for early December. Thursday looks to be the quietest day of the upcoming period as weak ridging builds into the region. At the surface, Canadian high pressure will be slow to work in from the north, and temperatures on Thursday will again be quite warm. Looking at low to mid 50s across the region with the exception of the Poconos, which will stay in the 40s. With some moisture aloft, skies will be mostly cloudy with a mid to high level cloud deck. Ridging begins to break down on Thursday night as the next system approaches. With the colder airmass working its way into the region, temperatures should be 5-10 degrees lower than Wednesday night, with upper 20s in the Poconos/NW NJ, with low to mid 30s across SE PA, most of NJ, and Delmarva. The GFS has backed off and fell more in line with global guidance in terms of the Friday/Saturday system. Backed off the spread of PoPs into our region late Thursday/early Friday but parts of Delmarva and SE PA could see some showers work their way in on Friday AM. Some flakes could be mixed in over the far western PA zones as well during the morning hours, but any precipitation should be light to start out. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... Friday looks to be an unsettled day across the area as high pressure lifts out. GFS has come into better agreement with global guidance in the 12z suite, delaying the precipitation overspread into our region, and showers generally being more scattered through the day. Best chance to see precipitation will be over SE PA, South Jersey, and Delmarva on Friday. Some snowflakes may be mixed in across Berks and Chester County through the morning on Friday, but mainly looking at scattered light rain for everyone else. A shortwave trough will move in from the Midwest Friday night into Saturday with an associated area of surface low pressure sliding by to the south. This will result in some more widespread precipitation moving through on Friday night. As it stands currently, precip type looks to be mainly rain from Trenton/Reading southward. With a cold airmass off to our north, there is some potential for a wintry mix north of that area, with higher elevations in the Poconos and NW NJ possibly seeing all light snowfall. Still a lot of uncertainty with this event overall though in terms of precipitation type. Rain/snow showers will continue through daybreak. Some moisture may linger through Saturday, with some scattered showers possible over the daytime hours. Other than the higher elevations, this should mainly be all rain. From Saturday night onward, the forecast becomes far more uncertain. With an area of low pressure lingering offshore, steady northeast flow will funnel in sufficient moisture for additional showers. Looks like winds will increase as well with the pressure gradient tightening. Have broad Chc PoPs in for Sunday across the region, which mainly should stay all rain, however some snowflakes may be mixed in over the Poconos. Start of next week could transition to a quieter period as flow looks to amplify with a deepening trough over the western US and a building upper level ridge over the eastern US. Guidance is still all over the place regarding the strength/positioning of these features, so stuck close to NBM from Sunday onward as uncertainty is very high. Temperatures through the long term period look to be right around seasonal averages for mid-December. Highs are generally expected to be in the 40s, with lows getting down near freezing in most spots. && .AVIATION /02Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Through tonight...IFR conditions will prevail at most terminals, though brief improvement is possible on occasion. Visibility will drop due to periods of steadier rain, as well as due to intervals of mist/drizzle. Cigs likely end up below 500 feet for most sites. Winds mainly south to southeast 5-10 kts. Moderate confidence overall. Wednesday...IFR likely to start with low clouds/fog/mist/drizzle, with some improvement back to MVFR possible by afternoon. However, do not expect VFR conditions to return during daylight hours for any length of time. Occasional showers will also be possible especially KABE/KRDG. Winds SW around 5 kts. Moderate confidence in pattern, low confidence in details. Outlook...
