BAHWhat forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this areal flood warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this areal flood warning went out at Jun 12, 6:47 AM EDT, 3 hours earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Jun 12, 6:47 AM EDT, 3 hours before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 647 AM EDT Sun Jun 12 2022 .SYNOPSIS... A warm front will continue lifting through the area today. A weak cold front will move through tonight into Monday as low pressure passes to our northwest. Several additional frontal systems may affect the region through the remainder of the week. High pressure is likely to build in for next weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Showers and thunderstorms continue to work their way northward across the region this morning, currently moving through the Philadelphia metro as of 5:30 am. These are producing brief heavy downpours that could put up to half an inch of rain down along with some thunder and lightning. These are elevated so winds haven't picked up too much with them, up to 20 to 25 mph. A modestly dreary day with increasing humidity and scattered showers and thunderstorms. Expecting cloud cover to be a little thicker and the environment to be a little less supportive for stronger convection, thus, the SPC has pulled back the Slight Risk with the southwestern portions of the CWA now in a Marginal Risk and the northeastern portion in general thunderstorm risk. A few showers and downpours this morning along a weak and diffuse boundary over the southern third of the area south of the Philadelphia Metro. This will lift through the area as it develops into a warm front (the better defined portion of the front more over the Great Lakes. A cold front trailing southwest of a surface low over southern Canada will then move east towards the area through the day, and cross the region late tonight. The general consensus among the CAMs is for more focused showers and thunderstorms from the Philly metro through central New Jersey south and east this morning then a lull before more develop over east-central Pennsylvania this afternoon as a secondary shortwave perturbation and vorticity maximum moves towards the area. This looks to focus more of the stronger showers and thunderstorms north of the PA Turnpike and I-195. Being a very weakly forced event devoid of much surface forcing, there is low confidence in precisely when and where rain will occur. While not a washout, the potential is there for all of us through the day, so you will want to keep guard should you have any outdoor plans. While a non-zero severe threat, the hydro threat is perhaps to be the greater impact today. Even that, with total rainfall amounts in the deterministic forecast generally ranging from one half to one inch, confidence is not great enough to warrant a Flood Watch at this time. A few advisories and possibly a warning cannot be ruled out later today with PWATs attempting to near 1.8 to 2 inches. Would like to see slightly higher PWATs closer to 2 inches, but these look to remain confined to our south behind another stationary/warm front over the southern Mid-Atlantic. We will need to watch where the rain does occur given some recent moderate to heavy rain that has occurred, especially in the urban corridor. Rainfall rates could easily surpass one to several inches per hour in the heaviest downpours, but these will be brief and not widespread. Turning to the severe side of the coin, cloud cover likely prohibiting surface lifting through most of the region, so our attention remains more focused on ML and MUCAPE values. There is a narrow window early this afternoon with MUCAPE values nearing the 2000 J/kg neighborhood, especially north and west of I-95, which with 0-3 km shear nearing 25-30 knots, could support some severe multicell clusters. Should any cold pools develop, we could get some small line segments, though DCAPE isn't particularly high (below 1000 J/kg generally) given a pretty moist column, but there is drier air above the 500 mb level, which could be tapped in by any stronger convection. Strong to locally damaging wind is the primary threat today with any thunderstorms that do form. Highs today will be similar to just a few degrees cooler than yesterday in the low to mid 70s north and west of I-95 and in the mid to upper 70s south and east of I-95. If we see a nice break with clearing early this afternoon, a few places could easily over- perform. Dew points will be on the rise as the developing warm front lifts to our north, adding 5 to 10 degrees compared to yesterday so it will feel a bit more on the sticky side this afternoon. Lows tonight should remain a bit warmer with higher dew points and some lingering showers and thunderstorms in the upper 60s to around 70. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/... Mid-level northwest flow continues for the start of the work week. Both the Monday and Tuesday forecasts feature considerable uncertainty. For Monday, much of the uncertainty stems from the evolution of Sunday's potential convective event. Lingering outflow boundaries, and/or the presence of a very weak cold front in the still warm and humid air mass, may be sufficient to produce a pop up shower or storm. But more likely, there will be insufficient forcing for this to happen, and/or the weak front will progress far enough south to bring some relatively drier air into the region. So overall, am still inclined to believe the Monday daytime period will be mainly dry, with no more than slgt chc PoPs currently forecast. With some modest height rises and the development of a west-northwesterly downslope flow, Monday should also be fairly warm. Highs in the mid to upper 80s are forecast, locally near 90 on Delmarva. It will be fairly muggy also, though with time the downslope flow should yield some mixing out of the dew points especially north. Heading into Monday night and Tuesday, the question becomes the evolution of a possible severe MCS moving out of the Great Lakes region. Most guidance, both global and CAM, indicates an MCS developing in the Great Lakes region by late Monday. Following the northwest flow along the periphery of the ridge, the MCS would then track southeast in our general direction. Given plenty of instability, this MCS would have the potential to be long lived. Some guidance, such as the 12.0z GFS and RGEM take the MCS directly over our region. This is possible, but it is more likely the MCS would be inclined to dive further south towards the better instability. Did raise PoPs for late Monday night through Tuesday midday, but only to chc values at most. The diurnal timing also does not look favorable for this event, with late Monday night through Tuesday morning being the time to watch, though in this time of pattern that limiting factor can occasionally be overcome. So while this period is worth watching, the more likely outcome is that the MCS, assuming it develops at all, stays at least mostly to our south. And if that happens, Tuesday will actually be a nice day with both temperatures and humidity lower than on Monday. Highs will tend to favor the low 80s, with low to mid 60s overnight. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Overview... A mid-level northwest flow pattern will generally continue for the remainder of this week as strong ridging remains persistent over the central US. The ridge will reorganize towards the end of the week though, with the original ridge axis folding over anticyclonically over the East and a new axis developing over the Plains or Intermountain West. As the original axis folds over, it will bring temporary height rises to our region, as well as a period of low level southwest flow ahead of one or two frontal systems which will pass through late in the week. Because of the height rises and southwest flow, we will turn a little warmer and more humid by late week. We still aren't expecting any significant heat, but the Wednesday-Friday period is likely to feature plenty of readings in the mid 80s to around 90. However, as the ridge axis ultimately re- orients further west by next weekend, any warmth and humidity will not have much staying power. As has been stressed recently, these northwest patterns are inherently unpredictable, and forecast changes are likely in the days ahead. The current forecast sticks close to the latest NBM. Dailies... Wednesday-Wednesday night... Present indications are that Wednesday should not see any shortwave disturbances propagating through the northwest flow aloft. Instead, high pressure over New England should bring us a dry day. Some parts of the area do have slgt chc PoPs mentioned in deference to a multi-cycle blend, but confidence is fairly high on a dry day. The rain risk may start to increase by Wednesday night, though that is uncertain. An eastward shift of the ridge axis to our west will lead to some height rises and bring us a rather warm day, with temperatures rising mostly into the mid 80s, but it does not look too humid. A light southeast surface flow around the periphery of the New England high will also keep coastal areas cooler. Thursday-Friday night... This seems likely to be the most active period of the stretch as the pattern reshuffle takes place over the CONUS. At least one, possibly two, cold fronts will approach the region late in the week. While details remain unclear, it is likely we'll have at least one, possibly multiple, more widespread opportunities for showers and storms by Thursday and/or Friday. It is too early to try to time them out and/or gauge any potential severe weather risk, but have covered most of the period with chc PoPs. As mentioned above, we temporarily move into a better warm advection pattern during this period. As a result, Thursday and Friday both look warm, with highs in the mid 80s to around 90, and fairly high humidity also. Saturday-Saturday night... While the uncertainty in the pattern must be respected, early model consensus is strong for high pressure to build in on Saturday, likely remaining in place throughout next weekend. If this pans out, we should see a weekend characterized by dry weather, plenty of sunshine, and comfortable temperature and humidity levels behind the late week frontal system(s). && .AVIATION /12Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Today...A low confidence forecast with scattered showers and/or thunderstorms. Conditions hovering near the VFR/MVFR line through much of the day with restrictions most likely with heavier showers and thunderstorms. Best chance for showers is from PHL south through 18Z then this shifts north through the afternoon. Winds from the south-southeast from 5 to 10 knots. Low confidence. Tonight...MVFR or low-end VFR as showers and thunderstorms slowly exit the region. A few may linger through the night but overall coverage should lower. Winds turning to the southwest from 5 to 10 knots. Low confidence. Outlook... Monday-Monday night... Mainly VFR. Localized restrictions possible in showers or tstms, but mainly dry overall. West to west-northwest wind 5 to 10 kt, becoming light and variable at night. Moderate confidence. Tuesday-Tuesday night... Mainly VFR. Localized restrictions possible in showers or tstms, but again mainly dry overall. Winds mostly light and variable, favoring onshore directions towards the coast and possibly favoring the northwest near and west of the Delaware Valley. Moderate confidence. Wednesday-Wednesday night... Mainly VFR. Showers and tstms possible overnight especially north and west of PHL. Light east to southeast winds, locally light and variable. Moderate confidence. Thursday-Thursday night... Mainly VFR. Localized restrictions possible in showers or tstms. South to southwest wind 5 to 10 kt. Moderate confidence. && .MARINE... Conditions are expected to remain below Small Craft Advisory levels with winds from the south gusting from 15 to 20 knots and seas from 2 to 4 feet. Outlook... Monday through Thursday night... Winds and seas are expected to remain below SCA criteria. Several wind shifts expected through the period but gusts mainly 20 kt or less. Seas mainly 2 to 3 ft. Occasional chances for showers and tstms with briefly higher winds and seas. Rip currents... Today, winds will increase out of the south-southeast. A medium-long period southeasterly swell of 2 to 3 feet will result in a LOW risk for the development of dangerous rip currents. The risk may be a little greater on beaches more perpendicular to the southeasterly swell. Monday, winds weaken and turn more westerly. This likely results in a LOW risk of rip currents along both the New Jersey and Delaware beaches. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... PA...None. NJ...None. DE...None. MD...None.
