What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this areal flood warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this areal flood warning went out at Apr 7, 3:40 PM EDT, 1 hour 26 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Apr 7, 3:40 PM EDT, 1 hour 26 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
340 PM EDT Thu Apr 7 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
An upper-level low will remain over the Northeastern U.S. through
Saturday, leading to continued unsettled weather. High pressure will
build into the region Sunday and Monday before sliding offshore into
the middle part of next week as a stronger storm system organizes
across the central portions of the country.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Showers continue to affect the area and at this time (mid
afternoon) are mainly from around the urban corridor northward.
In terms of the overall setup, low pressure centered over North
Carolina into Virginia with a warm front extending E/NE from
this feature just making it to around the mouth of the
Chesapeake Bay. There's some elevated instability north of here
but the surface instability is mainly south of here in the warm
sector.

As we go through this afternoon into early this evening, the low
will move northeast towards Delaware helping to push the warm front
farther north as well. As this occurs, energy from the large upper
level trough/low to our west will be making its way eastward as
well. The upshot is that more showers/storms will move through the
area due to the broad synoptic lift and deep layer moisture coupled
with increasing instability. The Storm Prediction Center continues
to highlight a Marginal risk for severe weather making its way
into southern Delaware and adjacent portion of the eastern MD
shore as these are the areas that may get just barely into the
warm sector. ML CAPE will likely just be a few hundred j/kg or
less but given the strong flow through the boundary layer as
well as deep layer shear damaging winds will be a threat. That
said, still think the bigger concern will be hydro. Through the
first half of the day a broad swath near and north of the urban
corridor "over performed" with the first round of showers
seeing .5 to locally over 1.0 inches of rain with streams
showing some responses. This next round of showers/storms moving
through late this afternoons through this evening is likely to
produce another 1 to 2 inches of rain with locally higher
amounts possible in any convection. For this reason a Flood
Watch remains in effect basically covering the urban corridor
and points north/west where these higher rain amounts are
expected. Many areas may only see more nuisance type flooding
of low lying areas and streams but there is the potential that
flash flooding could occur in some places, especially if heavier
cells set up near urban areas. 3 HR flash flash flood guidance
leading into today was around 1.0 to 1.5 inches and these
amounts within that time period not out of the question. There
will also continue to be responses on the rivers and it's worth
noting the MARFC now has a handful of river points (mainly in
the Raritan and Passaic basins) to reach into Action stage later
tonight/Friday.

The showers/storms should finally start to taper off west to east
through the late evening into the overnight as the low moves north
towards NYC and then into western New England. As this occurs winds
will swing around to west behind the system with at least some
partial clearing as well. Expect overnight lows mostly in the 40s.

Heading into the day Friday...while the first portion of the day
looks dry, scattered showers will develop into the afternoon as the
deep cutoff upper level low shifts eastward into the Northeast.
Given the steep low-level lapse rates, there is a good chance that
we could see some graupel and small hail with these showers as just
enough MLCAPE should lift moisture above the freezing level.
Otherwise expect variable cloud cover and breezy conditions with
highs mostly in the upper 50s to low 60s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Upper level low will be gradually translating east through this
period. As a result, could see additional rounds of showers Saturday
and Sunday before the main trough axis is finally east of our
region. However, we are also expecting continued dry air advection
through this period. Consequently, moisture will be limited so any
precipitation through this period should be light.

The northwesterly flow especially Saturday night into Sunday will
also result in cold air advection. On both days temperatures will be
below normal. Highs on Saturday will be 5 to 10 degrees below normal
ranging from the mid 40s to mid 50s. Sunday may be the coldest day
of the next 7 days, with highs in the 40s to lower 50s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
In the wake of the upper level trough, a surface high is expected to
build from the south while in the mid and upper levels a large ridge
begins to build over the eastern seaboard. As mentioned by the
previous shift, there is quite a bit of variability between models
with regards to how quickly this ridge will shift east and if we
will see any embedded short wave troughs within the larger scale
flow. For now, have gone close to a model blend, with only slight
chance mentions of precip in the Monday through Tuesday period.

The other story through the Monday/Tuesday period will be warm air
advection thanks to the subsidence with the ridge and low level
southwesterly flow. By Monday, highs will be mostly in the 70s
across the region.

For Wednesday and Thursday, attention turns to the large closed low
over the central U.S.. This low is expected to eventually bring a
cold front or occluded front through our region. Just ahead of and
with this front will be the next chance for a widespread rain event.
However, the question is when this will happen. Most guidance is
depicting the front staying well west of our region until after next
Thursday, but at least one deterministic model (GFS) is more
progressive, depicting the front arriving late Thursday. Given the
pattern with the deepening low, this is far more progressive than
what we typically see. Thus, for now, expect the warm (and mostly
dry) weather to continue through Thursday.

.AVIATION /20Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Through Tonight...IFR/LIFR in the evening with showers and
potentially some thunder, then conditions improve to MVFR and VFR
west to east through the late evening into the early overnight
period as showers/storms move out. The center of a low will pass
through Delaware into NJ so the wind pattern around this will mean
NE/N winds this evening at RDG/ABE, East winds near the urban
corridor and E/SE winds south of here. Speeds should generally be
around 10 knots or so. Winds eventually come around to
west/northwest overnight behind the low. Moderate confidence.

Friday...Generally VFR with scattered showers and associated brief
periods of MVFR or lower restrictions possible. Southwest winds from
5 to 10 knots with gusts from 15 to 20 knots. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Saturday and Sunday...Mostly VFR conditions are expected, though
there is a chance that brief MVFR ceilings could develop for some of
this period. Westerly and northwesterly winds 5 to 15 kt. Moderate
confidence.

Monday through Tuesday...Mostly VFR conditions. Southwesterly and
southerly winds 5 to 15 kt. Moderate confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
The Small Craft Advisory continues through the first half of this
evening for all zones. It's even possible there could be a few wind
gusts to 35 knots or so off the NJ coast. Also, showers with
embedded storms moving over the waters this evening could result in
locally higher wind gusts. Conditions should drop below Small Craft
Advisory levels by mid evening for the Delaware Bay but will linger
through Friday over the ocean zones due to elevated seas (winds will
diminish overnight tonight).

Outlook...

Friday night through Saturday...On the coastal waters, elevated seas
may linger, though confidence is low on how quickly seas will
decrease below 5 feet. Otherwise, winds and seas should stay below
SCA criteria.

Sunday through Tuesday...Winds and seas should stay below SCA
criteria, though northwesterly wind gusts above 20 kt will be
possible on Sunday..
