around Wenatchee, Chelan, Omak, and into the East Slopes of the 
Cascades have been very heavy and on the order of 1 to 2 inches per 
hour.  All Cascade Passes are closed at this time.  Areas of 
freezing rain will be a concern across the Columbia Basin into the 
Palouse this afternoon and early evening.

.SYNOPSIS...
Parts of central Washington will experience one of the biggest
snow events in many years tonight into Thursday morning including
the Wenatchee, Leavenworth, and Chelan areas. Motorists with plans
to travel across the Cascade Passes tonight into Thursday should
closely monitor pass conditions before making their trip. Friday
will be quite windy with gusts as high as 40 to 50 mph across the
Columbia Basin, Palouse, and West Plains. Quieter weather will
arrive over the weekend and persist into early next week.

.DISCUSSION...

...SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM TODAY...

Today through Friday night: The widespread winter system will
continue to impact the Inland Northwest today, but milder air will
start to invade the area tonight into Friday as a stout southerly
flow develops. First, this morning a warm front is draped across
west-central Washington to the lower Panhandle. Moisture
overrunning that boundary coupled with the cold air in place to
bring widespread snow. Heavier snowfall rates have been found
around some of the Cascades, with an earlier report of on inch per
hour near Leavenworth, WA. There have been a few reports of
around six inches or so in that region, but there are likely
higher amounts that we haven’t reports of yet. Waves of heavier
snow will continue to spread across that area this morning.
Another swath of heavier snowfall rates is found from the Okanogan
Highlands and east-southeast across Steven and Pend Oreille
county, into the Spokane/CdA area and some of Palouse and central
Panhandle. At our office we have picked around two inches so far
and the Spokane Airport reports approximately an inch and half so
as of about 2 am.

Most areas will see continued snow through early morning, but by
mid to late morning that activity is projected to wane some in the
lee of the Cascades/upper Columbia Basin and maybe as far east as
the West Plains and lower Palouse – at least briefly. The
Cascades and eastern mountain zones and remainder of southeast
Washington will continue to see precipitation falling much of the
morning and afternoon, however, in the moist west-northwest flow
and in the vicinity of that warm front. Yet some of that will
transition away from snow to a mixture of rain, snow and freezing
rain.

Milder air will be invading as we go into later this morning and
afternoon. As of about 2 AM, the milder air aloft (850 mb
temperatures at 0 C or higher) according to LAPS analysis was
lifting through western WA and impinging on the south-central WA
border. Extrapolation of that LAPS trends and model depiction
brings that warm nose into the deeper Columbia Basin, lower
Palouse and L-C Valley southward between about 15-20Z (7 am to
noon). That will allow for more of a mix in the lee of the Blues
into the L-C Valley and Palouse. Freezing rain is possible here,
as mentioned, but there is a better potential for the surface
temperatures to being to warm as well. Farther west into the
Columbia Basin and Moses Lake area the milder air aloft is more
apt to be coupled with freezing temperatures at the surface. The
precipitation chances will be waning in these areas some later
this morning and early afternoon, so that will limited that
freezing rain potential some.

Late this afternoon into tonight the parent low starts to move in
and the milder air continues to surge north, while that incoming
low revitalizes the precipitation across the region. Snow will
continue over the mountain zones and over north-central to
northeast WA. It will also continue early on over portions of the
northern basin and the Spokane/CdA area, but it is more apt to mix
with rain or freezing rain and eventually change to all rain as
evening progresses into overnight as temperatures rise. Farther
west, however, into the deeper Columbia Basin and Moses Lake and
perhaps the Waterville Plateau, the freezing rain there could be
more impactful. So we will have to monitor that for possible
highlights after this morning’s round of precipitation. Up to a
tenth of an inch of ice might be seen in those areas.

Overall, away from the mountain zones and additional snow amounts
of 3-7 inches are possible during the day today, on top of what
has fallen overnight. Within the mountain zones, another 4-10
inches will be possible, with amounts measured in feet toward the
passes. Again that is on top of what has fallen overnight.

Going into Friday and Friday night the area will remain activity,
but in a milder regime. Look for continued mountain snow and a
chance of rain over the eastern third of WA and lower ID. The
chances will be highest during the day, then quickly retreat to
the mountain zones at night. However the other impact will be
winds. Increasing southwest winds will bring potential 15-30 mph,
with gusts near 30-45 mph. We will have to monitor areas downwind
of the Blues onto the Palouse for possible wind highlights. These
winds will also bring the threat of blowing/drifting snow,
particularly in areas that remain colder toward the wester Basin
and Waterville Plateau. /Cote’

Saturday - Tuesday: Ensemble model suites continue to support high
pressure building over the Northwestern US late this weekend and
continuing into next week keeping the region void of any
significant winter weather systems. Snow showers will continue
across the Cascade Crest and Idaho Panhandle on Saturday but at
much lighter intensities and produce far less impacts compared to
what will come during this current winter storm. Confidence is
above average for dry weather to return to the region Sunday and
Monday as the ridge axis strengthens overhead. Areas of fog and
low clouds are likely to plug many of our lowlands and could
struggle to dissipate throughout the day given poor mixing, an
abundance of lowland snow, and low January sun angle. As such,
temperatures will likely remain cool and struggle to warm above
freezing.

We have seen some changes within the 100 member ensemble model
output in regards to precipitation chances going into the middle
of next week but confidence remains high that any precipitation
will be extremely light. Roughly 85% of members have trend toward
the direction of the European and now flatten the ridge and draw
deeper moisture toward the WA Coast bringing a glancing blow of
mid and high level moisture into the region. Roughly 70 of the 100
members have 24hr QPF between 0-0.01" for locations like
Wenatchee, Omak, Spokane, and Lewiston for each "potential"
precipitation event Tue-Wed so unless there is a major shift in
the models, looks as if the region will get a break from any
significant winter weather systems. If we do get any moisture in
this time, it could fall as a wintry mix due to a complex thermal
structure with subsidence warming aloft and cooler air trapped
under low-level inversions. Stagnant air and increasing pollutants
is something else that will need to be considered. If the stratus
was to develop and persist, it will be tough to meet thresholds
for air stagnation but a few of the models do suggest we could be
close for many locations.

Following some flattening of the ridge around midweek, the
upper-level ridge will stand a good chance of re-amplifying
bringing another period of cool and quiet weather. /sb

12Z TAFS:

...PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOW THIS MORNING FOLLOWED BY THE POTENTIAL
FOR LIGHT FREEZING RAIN THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING...

Snow will continue to fall across all TAF sites this morning,
especially before about 15-17Z. The precipitation will start to
wane near the lee of the Cascades, such as near MWH. Snow will
mix with rain and maybe freezing rain around LWS as milder air
noses in. Snow rates will decrease at the other TAF sites after
that 15-17Z time frame, but will continue to fall heavier around
the mountains. A broader chance for freezing rain will develop
later this afternoon into tonight. Best chances will impact the
central and western Basin, near places like MWH and EPH. Some
light icing is possible in the afternoon/tonight, up to 0.10".
Farther east the precipitation will transition from snow to a
rain/snow mix, possibly all rain. That transition comes to LWS/PUW
first, after about 16-20Z. Toward GEG/SFF/COE, that transitions
may develop as early as 00Z, but better chances develop after
about 04Z into the overnight. A bit of freezing rain may be mixed
in near GEG/SFF, but confidence is low. Lastly, winds will be on
the increase aloft going into tonight. A slight increase in
surface winds is possible tonight, but that is more likely to hold
off until during the day Friday. Yet LLWS will be possible in

A strong winter storm will impact the region today. Moderate to
heavy snow accumulations are expected in the valley and basin
areas. Be prepared for a snowy, potentially slow Thursday morning
commute. Snow will slowly transition to mix of snow and rain from
south to north across the Columbia Basin later Thursday morning
into tonight, with areas around Spokane and Coeur d'Alene area
seeing the transition possible late this afternoon into tonight.
A brief period of freezing rain will be possible during this
transition but significant ice accumulations are not expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY

Breezy to windy conditions are expected Friday. Some stronger
winds near the Blue Mountains, Palouse northward into the Spokane
area may cause localized damage to trees or tree limbs and be
hazardous to high profile vehicles. Localized power outages will
also be possible.
