The arrival of a cold front late Wednesday and Thursday will
bring locally breezy conditions with temperatures cooling into the
mid 70s and lower 80s. Temperatures warm back up by the weekend.
Dry weather is expected through the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Tuesday and Wednesday: A loop of the water vapor imagery would
indicate a rather boring, flat ridge pattern developing over the
Northwest with several rotating features in the eastern Pacific from
British Columbia south to the current Tropical Storm Kay.
Currently we have a trough moving into the BC coast from Gulf of
Alaska which will bring cooler and breezy weather to the Inland
Northwest later this week and work to break down the Great Basin
High. This trough has evolved the past few days from a brief
brush-by to our north to now what will bring breezy-gusty west
winds region-wide on Wednesday.
Tues and Wed still look to be the warmest days this week with quite
low humidity values. PWAT percentages are in the 60% of normal
range Tuesday ahead of the frontal passage. As the pressure
gradient along the Cascades tightens and cold air advection
becomes more amplified Wednesday, westerly winds will increase
(sustained winds and gusts). Model guidance has shown increasing
wind values for places in the Cascade Valleys such as Wenatchee,
Omak, and into the lower Columbia Basin with average gusts 25-30
mph. As winds begin to increase late Wednesday after dry and hot
conditions Tuesday and Wednesday, elevated to critical fire
weather conditions will present themselves across the region. This
is not helpful for ongoing wildfires or new fire starts.
The flow aloft will shift from west to northwest to north
overnight Wednesday as the short wave moves eastward. Cold
advection will continue to filter into the area bringing cooler

This will be a good set up for strong northerly winds down the
Okanogan Valley, across the Kramer Plateau, and out onto the
Waterville Plateau and western Columbia Basin. The from the north
in these patterns is typically very dry, but the temperatures will
also be rather cool, which should result in very low humidities.
Even the Okanogan Highlands should be rather windy. Actually all
of the forecast area will have gusty northwest winds by Thursday
afternoon. Temperatures will be 10-12 degrees cooler than
Wednesday.
The gusty winds will continue Thursday night and Friday, shifting
to the northeast. Sheltered valleys could drop into the lower 40s
or even upper 30s Friday morning, but the wind should keep
temperatures from getting really cold in most areas. The same goes
for Saturday. Depending on the fire activity, a northeast wind
could bring wildfire smoke into much of eastern Washington.
Meanwhile, a high pressure ridge will be moving onshore for the
weekend, allowing temperatures to warm back into the 80s. But the
ridge is transitory, so it moves east of us by early next week.
Models are all in fair agreement on a pattern change, with below-
normal heights to our west next week. This will bring more fall-
like temperatures to our area next week, with a better chance of
precipitation as we get later into the week. RJ
