.SYNOPSIS...
A heat wave will continue into Monday. Winds will become
increasingly breezy into early next week. More in the way of cloud
cover is expected on Monday with possibly some passing sprinkles.
There will be a gradual cool down of temperatures throughout the
week with minor chances for precipitation.

.DISCUSSION...
Tonight through Tuesday night: A shortwave trough of lower
pressure can be seen on water vapor satellite pushing across
northwest portion of the Gulf of Alaska and about to move into
northern BC. This shortwave will push across the region late
tomorrow afternoon into Monday evening. There are a few different
factors that need to be addressed with this disturbance. Broadly
speaking, the shortwave will flatten out the ridge of higher
pressure. The cut off low off the coast of northern California
will pump more mid level moisture across the area ahead of the
approaching shortwave disturbance.
(1) One factor to address will be this increasing mid level
moisture. There is good agreement with the convective allowing
models that we should see quite a bit of developing Altocumulus
Castellanus (ACCAS) clouds developing across eastern Washington
late tonight as that shortwave interacts with this axis of
increasing moisture and instability at mid levels. There doesn't
seem to be enough combination of instability with synoptic level
forcing to generate thunderstorms, but a few lightning strikes
also can't be completely ruled out. There's high confidence that
any moisture that does fall out of these clouds will mostly
evaporate, so we are going with sprinkles for now. We will see
these ACCAS cover push east with time through the day on Monday
and develop into the Panhandle by Monday afternoon/evening.
(2) The added cloud cover will be a welcome sight with our hot
temperatures and limit the amount of sun beating down for anyone
outside. Temperatures should be a little bit cooler tomorrow
(still hot) with temperatures aloft cooling a bit and added cloud
cover also helping. We will continue with our excessive heat
warning into Monday, but confidence is high that Monday will be
our final hot day of this current heat wave.
(3) The approaching shortwave disturbance will result in more of
a marine push through the Cascades on Monday. This will enhance
winds, especially in the lee of the Cascades. Fire Weather Watches
in effect for Monday have been upgraded to Red Flag Warnings due
to breezy winds and low relative humidity in the afternoon-
evening. I also added the Methow Valley and Okanogan Valley to the
red flag warning for Monday. Tuesday looks breezier overall
compared to Monday at least across the exposed areas of the basin,
Spokane Area, and Palouse. A Fire Weather Watch will be issued
for these areas to address the breezy and dry conditions for
Tuesday.
(4) Smoke and hazy conditions is expected into Monday with more
regional fires popping up. This may result in some air quality
degradation. The good news is that all of this smoke will be
moving in from aloft and mostly thin out as it lowers toward the
surface with afternoon mixing.
Tuesday will also be cooler with highs in the 90s region wide. The
cold air advection with the passing of the trough and increased
onshore flow will be the driving factor for the increased winds.

Wednesday: Models are in good agreement that a Low will push through
Central BC and swing a trough through the Inland Northwest. It will
bring gusty winds with very little moisture. Any shower activity
will mainly be northern mountains and Southeast WA and Lower ID
Panhandle. Winds will be generally sustained in the teens with gusts
near 30 MPH. The situation could lead to an extension of the fire
weather highlights for the Basin due to the strong winds and the low
humidities during Wednesday afternoon. Highs will be similar to
Tuesday with highs mainly in the 90s.
Thursday through Saturday: Behind the trough, a cooler, dry
northwest flow pattern will be over the region. While there is no
precip expected for the period, temperatures will drop to around
season normals. Highs will generally be in the 80s. Overnight lows
will be in the 50s and low 60s. Winds will be generally light and
diurnally driven. /JDC

18Z TAFs: High pressure remains over the region through Monday
promoting VFR conditions under mostly clear skies. Local areas of
smoke or haze could impact the Okanogan Valley and around Republic
with the source of the smoke coming from southern BC. We will also
see smoke spread northward into southeast Washington to the
southern Panhandle due to a large fire burning in northern
California. Lewiston Airport to Pullman/Moscow Airport will likely
be a bit hazy through the day today, but visibility at terminals
expected to remain 6SM or greater. Winds will increase between
Wenatchee...Chelan...Wilbur...and Spokane this afternoon with
