.SYNOPSIS...
Anticipate light mountain showers across the north today with
local breezy afternoon winds. A strong storm arrives tonight into
Monday, with heavy snow for the Cascades and the strong winds to
50 mph or more across most of the Inland Northwest. Expect
quieter, drier weather for the later half of the work week. A
chance of showers returns toward the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
...Strong winds region-wide and heavy mountain snow for the
Cascades on Monday into Monday night...
Today will be the relative calm before the storm, although not all
that quiet. A weak shortwave aloft will flatten out the ridge
aloft. Satellite shows a mid level band of moisture pressing east
of the Cascades. The high resolution models shows some spotty
convective showers possible by late morning in the Okanogan
Highlands, and spreading across the Selkirks to the northern
Panhandle mountains by afternoon. Rainfall amounts will be light
and instability low so the threat of thunder is minimal. Snow
levels will be near 3K ft by afternoon, so some light snow or
graupel is possible with the showers. Near the Cascade crest, snow
will become more steady by mid afternoon with the incoming next
system. Otherwise, the rest of the region will see filtered
sunshine with the thinning cloud deck in the afternoon. Winds
increase out of the southwest by afternoon with local gusts 25-30
mph. Daytime highs will be seasonal and a touch warmer than
yesterday with widespread 50s.
Tonight through Monday night: The next system roars into the
region, guided by strong zonal 150kt jet across the Pacific
Northwest and a deepening low pressure center across BC will bring
strong winds across the Inland NW. An atmospheric river will
accompany the low pressure system with a moisture plume will pound
the Cascade crest with heavy mountain snow. Precipitation will
spread east of the Cascades late tonight with lowland rain and
mountain snow. Winds will increase late tonight into Monday as a
cold front sweeps through the region. A rain shadow develops by
Monday morning limit the precipitation across much of central
Washington.
* SNOW: Snow will begin slightly early, by mid afternoon at the
Cascade crest. Under strong upslope flow, the snow will increase
in intensity overnight into Monday after the cold front passage.
Heavy snow will be found at the Cascades passes, including
Stevens Pass through Tuesday morning as snow showers persist.
Moderate to heavy snow is forecast with snowfall amounts up to 2
feet possible at Stevens Pass while some higher peaks could see
higher amounts. Mountain snow will be found in the across
northeast Washington and north Idaho, including Sherman Pass and
Lookout Pass with snow amounts of 5 to 10 inches.

range from 40-60kt across the Columbia Basin. Surface winds
pick up by mid morning and peak by mid afternoon. Strongest
winds will lie from the lee of the Cascades, Waterville Plateau,
Columbia Basin, West Plains, Palouse, southeast Washington and
parts of the southern Idaho Panhandle. Sustained winds should
range from 20-35 mph during the afternoon hours with gusts from
40 to 55 mph. Some 60-65 mph gusts are possible. Confidence is
high on the winds speeds, although moderate on the potential
impacts that can range from areas of blowing dust across the
agriculture fields of Columbia Basin, tree damage, and some
power outages. Winds should gradually decrease Monday night,
although strong mid level winds may continue across the Cascades
that keep the threat of local strong gusts through Monday
night.
* THUNDERSTORMS: Behind the cold front on Monday, instability increases
with the cold pool aloft. Most unstable cape range from 150-300
J/kg and sheer with be strong. Included a slight chance of
thunderstorms across northeast Washington and north Idaho,
mainly east of Republic, to Spokane and Pomeroy for Monday
afternoon and night. With the strong gradient winds, any
thunderstorms could increase the wind gust potential. Occasional
lightning, small hail or graupel is also possible with strong
storms. The thunderstorm threat should decrease Monday night.

Tuesday through Saturday: Zonal flow keeps the jet stream within
very close proximity of Eastern Washington and North Idaho until
ridge amplification pushes it northward thus breezy/gusty winds
linger on until about Wednesday morning. In addition to the blowing
dusts resulting from those winds in the large precipitation shadow
some snow showers will linger on within close proximity of the
Cascade Crest and over portions of North Idaho and the Blue
Mountains until sometime Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. The ridge
amplification becoming more noticeable Wednesday morning continues on
and peaks around Thursday allowing for a dry forecast with minimal
clouds and with temperatures peaking Thursday. The ridge axis
migrates eastward after Thursday as a large but shallow upper level
trof slowly sags to the southeast with a weak frontal zone marking
the leading edge of its approach. This will allow for an increase in
clouds Friday and minor pops for very light showers and a cooling
trend that continue on into Saturday with a cold front passage
