What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS New York, NY wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Apr 18, 2:38 AM EDT, 1 hour 33 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Apr 18, 2:38 AM EDT, 1 hour 33 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
238 AM EDT Mon Apr 18 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure settles over the area tonight and then slides
offshore on Monday. A deepening coastal low then impacts the
region Monday night into Tuesday morning. The low moves up into
Southeast Canada Tuesday afternoon. High pressure on Wednesday
gives way to a cold frontal passage late Thursday, but builds
back in again for the end of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
An upper trough will move off the New England coast this
evening. High pressure will then build over the northeast. Clear
skies and a dry atmosphere will combine with light to calm
winds overnight for ideal radiational cooling. No changes have
been made to the earlier updates to the frost and freeze
headlines. Confidence is highest for temperatures to fall to
30-32 within in the freeze warning areas where the growing
season has begun. Temperatures falling into the middle 30s
support the frost advisory. Lows will range from the upper 20s
across upper portions of the Lower Hudson Valley and SW CT, to
the low to mid 30s at the coast, and around 35 to 40 for the NYC
metro.

Brief ridging builds over the northeast on Monday with the surface
high shifting offshore. An amplifying upper trough will fast
approach on its heels with developing low pressure across the
southeast coast late in the afternoon and evening. Overrunning
clouds will spread northward over the area in the afternoon ahead of
the system, but no precipitation is expected during the day. Highs
on Monday will be cooler than normal in the lower 50s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
A fast moving deepening coastal low will track from the Middle
Atlantic coast Monday evening to Southern New England by Tuesday
morning. Models continue to come into better agreement on the
track and intensity of the low. However, there are still some
minor differences most notably some of the higher resolution
guidance tracking the low west of the global model and ensemble
consensus. The latest forecast has shifted a bit further west
compared to the previous forecast, which takes the low over
central Long Island and central Connecticut early Tuesday
morning. The NAM, NAM 3-km lie on the western envelope of the
guidance.

Thermal forcing increases rapidly Monday evening from south to
north with the deepest lift occurring overnight. The system
will be progressive with the forcing rapidly shifting to the
north and east around day break Tuesday. The low gradually
becomes captured by the upper trough late Tuesday as it lifts
into northern New England and southern Canada.

Precipitation type...Still thinking the majority of the event
will be in the form of rain. The trend to shift the track a bit
further west lowers the probability of any accumulating wet snow
across the higher elevations of Orange County. Boundary layer
temperatures are likely to stay above freezing as well. The
unfavorable position of the surface high also is a negating
factor. The threat for any significant accumulating snow remains
well to the north and west of Orange County. Even if there is a
shift east with the storm track, still feel any significant
accumulation will remain well to the north and west.

Rainfall...Rain will overspread the area from south to north
in the evening and then become moderate to locally heavy at
times from about 10 pm to 4 am. Rainfall amounts still look to
range from 1 to 1.5 inches. Rainfall rates could be one quarter
to one half inch an hour at times during the heavier downpours.
The fast movement of the system should prevent any significant
flooding concerns with minor urban and poor drainage flooding
the primary threat. The rain should quickly taper off from
south to north around day break Tuesday as the low quickly moves
into New England.

Winds...The deepening low and departing high will allow
easterly winds to increase Monday afternoon, becoming strongest
during the overnight. Have continued to side closer to the 90th
percentile of the NBM with minor adjustments upward across
eastern Long Island. The placement of the low level jet Monday
night will be a key factor for how strong the winds will get. It
is also a challenge in determining how much of the stronger
winds will mix down from the flow off the cooler waters. The
consensus track that is favored for now supports E-SE wind gusts
35 to 40 mph across Long Island and southeast Connecticut with
gusts 25 to 35 mph elsewhere. Gusts could reach 45 mph
especially across the forks. Have held off on any wind headlines
for now, but a wind advisory may be needed in future updates if
the trend in the low level jet and storm track continues
westward. Winds will come down briefly as the low tracks over
the area, then ramp back up during the day as the low lifts to
the north. W gusts 25 to 30 mph are likely with potential for 35
mph near the coast.

Behind the low on Tuesday, any lingering rain in the morning
comes to an end with a mostly dry afternoon. There could be a
few showers especially inland in the afternoon due to the
cyclonic flow aloft. Highs continue to be only in the 50s,
several degrees below normal for this time of year.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Fairly quiet weather is expected in the long term period as
high pressure will dominate this part of the forecast. High
pressure builds into the area on Wednesday and Thursday. A
weakening cold front is expected to move across the area late
Thursday into Thursday night, however high pressure builds back
into the region behind the front for the weekend. Expect a
warming trend through Friday, despite the frontal passage.

Will keep just some slight chance POPs very late in the long term as
some of the forecast guidance hints at some activity developing
on the periphery of the upper level ridge.

&&

.AVIATION /07Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
High pressure will build across the area through about 12Z
and then offshore by late morning. A deepening coastal low over
the Mid Atlantic states this afternoon will track across the
area overnight.

VFR through this afternoon. Increasing chance for rain toward
evening, with MVFR or lower conditions developing in the
evening with the onset of moderate to occasionally heavy rain.

Light NW winds will veer to the north and east less than 10 kt
going into the morning push. Winds increase from the east to
southeast to near 10-15 kt during the mid to late morning. E/ESE
Gusts 20-25 kt expected in the afternoon, increasing to 35-40
for city/coast terminals during the evening. Highest gusts will
occur from approximately 03Z to 09Z from west to east. Gusts
across the Lower Hudson Valley terminals during this time look
to be 30 to 35 kt.

	...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...

MVFR conds and E/ESE gusts 25-30 kt likely developing through
the Mon eve push. Gusts up to 40 kt expected by 03Z.

.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY...

.MARINE...
Sub-SCA conditions are expected for the remainder of tonight
through Monday afternoon. A developing coastal low tracks over
the waters Monday night. Winds will increase in the evening with
gale conditions likely on all waters overnight.

Winds will shift to the NW and W behind the low Tuesday
morning. The thinking is any gales will quickly end with SCA
conditions continuing through the day on Tuesday. Seas will
continue subsiding tonight before become elevated above 5 ft
Monday night into Tuesday.

West winds 25-30 kt Tuesday night will diminish below advisory
levels Wednesday for all waters. Seas on the ocean however will
remain above criteria until Wednesday night. South winds increase on
Thursday ahead of a weak front. The ocean will stand the best chance
of reaching sca criteria. Winds and seas drop below SCA levels for
all waters on Friday.

.HYDROLOGY...
A significant wetting rainfall Monday night into early Tuesday
morning will bring an average of 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches of
rainfall. SPC HREF indicating some localized swaths of 1 1/2 to
2" of rain possible. Max rainfall rates of one quarter to one
half inch an hour at times during the heavier downpours.

Minor urban and poor drainage flooding is a threat across the
entire area. A couple of things to watch for in terms of a low
and localized flash flooding threat are heavy rain coinciding
with times of high tides Mon evening, and FFG of as little as 1
1/4" in 6 hr along flashy portions of the Passaic and Rahway
River basin (eg. Rahway River and HoHokus Brook).
Correspondingly, WPC has placed northern NJ under a Marginal
Excessive Rainfall Outlook due to lower FFG guidance (6hr FFG
around 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches).

No hydrologic impacts are expected Tuesday night through next
weekend.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Widespread minor coastal flooding is likely for the Monday
night high tide cycle along NY/NJ harbor.

Widespread minor to localized moderate flooding (1 1/2 to 2 ft
of inundation) is likely for vulnerable locales along Jamaica
Bay and Queens and Great South Bay of Nassau County, as well as
along vulnerable shoreline communities along W LIS for Mon
Night high tide. The moderate flood threat would be more
widespread along SW CT and coastal Westchester if easterly gale
winds continue through the time of high tide. At this time, this
appears to be a low end probability, with likelihood the winds
back to the NE by high tide and keep moderate flood impacts
localized from surge and waves from NW Suffolk around the W
LI/NYC/Westchester coast to SW CT.

Generally minor coastal flood impacts are expected along
vulnerable twin fork of LI communities, with localized minor for
eastern great South Bay for Mon Night high tide.

If low pressure tracks west of NYC, the threat for moderate
coastal flooding would increase for the above mentioned south
shore bay and W LIS communities, due to a longer and stronger
easterly wind forcing through the time of Mon Night high tide.
