Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
117 PM EST Sat Jan 15 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
Arctic high pressure builds in from the Great Lakes region
through tonight and moves off the northeast coast Sunday.
Developing low pressure over the southeast will track north and
intensify as it passes over or just to the west of the area
Sunday night into Monday. The storm system lifts into southeast
Canada Monday night as high pressure builds into the area
through Tuesday. A quick moving frontal system passes Wednesday
into Wednesday night followed by high pressure late in the
week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
The forecast remains on track this afternoon.
A strong Arctic high will continue to build toward the region
through tonight as weak upper ridging builds into eastern
Canada. Winds and wind gusts will continue to diminish as deep
low pressure continues to move toward the Canadian Maritimes.
The peak of the Arctic air will move into the region tonight as
winds diminish and skies become nearly clear. Temperatures will
be in in single digits across much of the region, with sub zero
air temperatures possible across Orange County New York, and
around 10 near the coast. Winds will be less than 10 mph,
however sub zero wind chills will again be possible tonight away
from the coast.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Guidance remains consistent with the track of a strong coastal
low with impacts to the region Sunday night into Monday. The low
will be approaching from the south during Sunday with the outer
precipitation shield possibly reaching the metro area by late in
the day. With Arctic air still in place the precipitation will
begin as light snow. However, the lower levels will be quickly
warming, especially aloft, and the warm air will push farther
inland. As a result rain will quickly mix in and change to all
rain along the coastal sections. And with warmer air aloft a
period of light freezing rain will be possible farther inland as
the precipitation transitions from snow to rain. At this time a
light glaze is possible. Also with the warm air quickly moving
inland snow totals have been reduced, with little to none along
the coast and 4 to 6 inches across Western Passaic County and
Orange County.
Winds will be more of an impact with strong southeast winds
ahead of the low as as the low becomes occluded late Sunday
night a low level jet of 70 to 80 kts could bring warning level
gusts to the coastal sections.
Heavy rainfall late SUnday night into early Monday may produce
minor poor drainage and urban flooding.
With high astronomical tides and the strong winds widespread coastal
flooding will also be an impact. See the tides and coastal
flooding section for details.
The storm will be quick moving and precipitation will be ending
during Monday as the dry slot moves through the region. There is
a chance of wrap around precipitation into Monday afternoon
with snow mixing with the rain as colder air returns.
&&
.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
No major changes to the forecast Monday night through the rest
of the week.
The storm system lifts up into southeast Canada Monday night
with a strong pressure gradient left in its wake. A gusty NW
flow will result in strong CAA Monday night. Temperatures will
fall back into and through the 20s in all likelihood, with wind
chills down mostly in the teens into Tuesday morning. The
pressure gradient relaxes on Tuesday as high pressure settles
nearby, resulting in a good amount of sunshine and slightly
below normal temperatures through Tuesday night.
A return flow gets established on Wednesday with the high
pushing offshore. A warm front extending down into the region
from a clipper system pushing through the Great Lakes will bring
increasing clouds. Temperatures will turn a bit milder and
should be a few degrees above normal. The clipper low then moves
to the north late Wednesday and Wednesday night, dragging its
frontal system across the region. This should be all primarily
northern branch energy with little moisture to work with.
Perhaps there will be a few rain and snow showers late Wednesday
and Wednesday night, but the frontal system should come through
without any meaningful precipitation. By Thursday, a large 1040
mb high will move into the the nation's mid section and will
build east through Friday. This will provide a return to much
colder conditions, with noticeably colder air moving in for
Thursday night into Friday. At the present time, it does not
appear to be as cold as recent cold waves. Temperatures should
however run about 10 degrees or so below normal by Thursday
night and Friday. Highs on Friday may not get out of the 20s
region wide.
Model spread and uncertainty is high to start next weekend. The
high may remain over the area with shortwave energy developing
low pressure off the Carolinas. Used the NBM for Saturday given
the time range and plenty of time to monitor deterministic and
ensemble trends.

area tonight.
N winds should still prevail at mainly 10-15kt, with gusts
20-25 kt mainly out east (KJFK/KHPN/KBDR/KISP/KGON). Some gusts
up to 20 kt may hang on at the NYC metros into this evening but
become sporadic at best, then speeds should drop below 10 kt
across the board during this evening.
Winds veer to the NE late tonight into Sunday morning, then
should shift E-SE and increase to around 10 kt along the coast
by afternoon.

.MARINE...
Allowed the Small Craft Advisory on the non-ocean waters to
expire as wind gusts have generally fallen below 25 kt.
With low pressure departing well to the northeast and Arctic
high pressure building toward the region wind gusts have
diminished below gale force. Wind gusts to small craft advisory
levels will continue through the afternoon on the ocean. Also,
ocean seas will remain at or above SCA levels through tonight.
Conditions will be sub SCA Sunday. Gales will become more
probable Sunday night into Monday, lasting longest for the
ocean. Also, there is the possibility of storm force wind gusts
near 50 kt across the eastern waters for several hours late
Sunday night into early Monday Morning. A gale watch is in
effect for all waters 6PM Sunday until 12PM Monday, and for the
the watch extends until 6PM Monday.
Gales may continue on the ocean Monday night with SCA
elsewhere. SCA conditions should then continue into Tuesday
before winds diminish late Tuesday into Tuesday night. Ocean
seas will remain elevated Monday night into Tuesday and subside
Tuesday night. After sub SCA conditions early Wednesday morning,
look for small craft conditions to return out on the ocean and
perhaps the eastern LI sound during the afternoon on a SW flow.
&&
.HYDROLOGY...
One to 1.5 inches of liquid equivalent is expected Sunday night
through Monday, much of which is expected to be rain across the
coastal sections. A wintry mix will begin at the coast with
inland sections having a wintry mix most of Sunday night. Some
heavy rain will be possible at times along the coast especially
late Sunday night into early Monday morning. Areas of minor
nuisance flooding will be possible, especially with periods of
heavy rain late Sunday night into early Monday morning.
The Wallkill River at Gardiner stage may be impacted by ice.
Mainly dry conditions are expected Monday night through Friday.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
With an upcoming storm system moving up from the south late in
the weekend and with the approach of a full moon, there will be
increasing potential for coastal flooding during and around
times on Monday mornings. The Monday daytime coastal flooding
looks to be potentially worse and quite widespread with the
possibility of moderate coastal flooding. This is all contingent
on the precise track of the low which more models are depicting
to pass just west of the waters.
Monday morning high tide cycle poses the highest threat as
winds substantially increase out of the E-SE Sunday night into
early Monday adding to the surge component, effectively piling
more water along the coastlines. Ekman transport will also
result in higher water levels along coastline. Forecast surge of
2 to 4 feet early Monday will allow for this widespread coastal
flooding, of which quite a few locations especially the South
Shore Bays, lower NY Harbor and Western Long Island Sound
shorelines could get moderate coastal flooding. A coastal flood
watch has been issued. Latest guidance indicates that perhaps
the eastern CT sound shore has a chance of reaching major
coastal flood benchmarks, and perhaps a few locations along the
north fork and along Peconic Bay, Western LI Sound, and S
Nassau.
Also, another potential coastal hazard will be the potentially
strong winds, high surf that would result erosion along the
ocean beaches. Forecast ocean seas get to 10 to 15 ft late
Sunday night through Monday.
