What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS New York, NY wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Dec 6, 1:17 AM EST, 2 hours 18 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Dec 6, 1:17 AM EST, 2 hours 18 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service New York NY 117 AM EST Tue Dec 6 2022 .SYNOPSIS... Offshore high pressure will continue to slide away to the northeast overnight. A frontal system with a weak area of low pressure will then approach for later today into Wednesday, before exiting to the east Wednesday night. High pressure overhead on Thursday will give way to another low pressure system that should likely pass just south Friday night into Saturday. High pressure may then briefly return from later Saturday into early next week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/... The forecast was updated to account for the latest hourly observations / trends. Rest of the forecast is on track. Holding pat across Orange County with respect to any freezing drizzle / rain chances towards daybreak. It appears as if it will be just dry enough in much of the column to keep this chance minimal. Will continue to monitor as all it takes is just enough moisture in the lower levels to result in a brief instance of freezing drizzle / light freezing rain. Thus, maintaining an hour or two of slight chance to chance of frz drizzle / rain. Temps should rise overnight via low level WAA, but could still be at or just below freezing as some spotty light precip begins to arrive close to daybreak per latest HRRR / NAM in far NW locations. Any light precip arriving then in most of Orange County would most likely fall in the form of light freezing drizzle and could produce hazardous driving and walking conditions, so this situation will have to be closely monitored overnight. Closer to the coast temps will continue their march upwards, at first gradual, then at a faster pace towards daybreak as SE flow / fetch takes gets a firmer grip. Light southerly flow will allow for some low level moisture increase, with some patchy low clouds across Long Island and S CT. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/... A rather long duration light to briefly moderate rain event is expected through Tuesday night as the frontal system over the mid-West approaches and the warm front to the south stalls but then heads north as a warm front. The cold front weakens somewhat as it approaches, but the convergence with the warm front will help to enhance the precipitation over the area late Tuesday into Tuesday night. There remains some uncertainty as to where the bulk of the rain will occur, with the NAM being the most aggressive, especially for southern portions of the forecast area. Taking into account all other models, between a tenth to just over three-quarters of an inch is expected through Tuesday night, with the lesser amounts occurring as you head east (more rain is expected for eastern areas into Wednesday). Flooding is not expected with this event given the long duration nature of the event. Increasing southeasterly flow for Tuesday will allow temperatures to rise to above normal, ranging from the lower to upper 50s, warmest along the coast. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/... Rain slowly shifts east Wednesday and Wednesday night with the storm system, with dry weather expected by the end of the night. With ridging aloft over the Northeast, surface high pressure builds in from the north, bringing us dry weather on Thursday and Thursday night. High temperatures will be above normal Wednesday and Thursday. Still a good amount of uncertainty regarding the weather pattern Friday through early next week. A shortwave reaches the Ohio Valley on Friday, then shifts east Friday night and Saturday. Differences show up among the global models regarding how much shearing it goes through as it shifts east toward a ridge, as well as the timing and placement of another shortwave that may interact with it. The idea of the low transferring energy from the Ohio Valley to a secondary low off the Mid-Atlantic Coast is more supported by the upper pattern of the GFS. Can't have any degree of confidence this far out when it comes to shortwave influence. With all of this said, NBM still seems to be a good compromise between the varying solutions regarding precip chances. Slight chc to chc PoPs from mainly Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon in association with this system. Thereafter, high pressure attempts to build in, but cannot completely rule out at least a slight chance of PCPN from a potential inverted trough trying to swing through from offshore or a new system approaching from the west. Highs Friday through Monday are expected to be near normal. && .AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... High pressure along the coast will weaken overnight. An extensive frontal system will then approach from the south and west on Tuesday. Patches of lower clouds with possible MVFR cigs are near KSWF and KGON, and could have brief impact overnight, otherwise mainly VFR into the AM push. Will have to watch at KSWF for some spotty light -FZDZ from about 12Z-14Z til temps rise above freezing and steadier rain arrives. Have delayed steady rain/MVFR cigs til 14Z-15Z for the NYC metros and until afternoon farther east. KSWF/KHPN should be the first to see conds lower to IFR, as early as 18Z at KSWF and 22Z at KHPN. Light/vrb winds tonight should become SE 5-10 kt daytime Tue. ...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty... AMD possible to fine tune arrival of MVFR cond. IFR cond tonight could arrive later than fcst. .OUTLOOK FOR 06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY... .Late Tuesday night and Wednesday...Rain with IFR cond. Chance of SE winds G15-20 kt into the Wed AM push, mainly for the coastal terminals. .Wednesday night...Rain gradually ending from west to east, with cond improving to MVFR in the evening and possibly to VFR overnight. .Thursday...VFR. .Friday...Chance of rain with MVFR cond, mainly afternoon/night. NE winds G15- 20 kt. .Saturday and Sunday...Chance or rain with MVFR cond, possibly mixed with snow inland. N-NE winds G20-25kt. Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component forecasts, can be found at: https:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90 && .MARINE... Sub-SCA conditions are expected through today. As SE flow increases late today, seas will slowly build on the ocean waters. Seas will build to 5 ft on the ocean waters for the second half of Tuesday night. Marginal advisory conditions prevail Wednesday and Thursday on the ocean, with the chance that seas prevail below 5 ft on Thursday as the flow shifts offshore. Otherwise, strengthening NE winds Friday and Saturday along with a rebuilding swell will maintain advisory conditions on the ocean waters. There is a chance for advisory conditions on the non-ocean waters both days depending on the eventual track of the next storm system that would be emerging off the eastern seaboard during this period. && .HYDROLOGY... Despite rainfall amounts of 0.75"-1.00" during midweek, no hydrologic concerns are expected through the period as this is expected to be a longer duration rain event. No hydrologic impacts are anticipated for late this week through the weekend. && .OKX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... CT...None. NY...None. NJ...None.
