What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS New York, NY wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale warning went out at Feb 16, 1:17 PM EST, 2 hours 39 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 16, 1:17 PM EST, 2 hours 39 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
117 PM EST Wed Feb 16 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure over the western Atlantic will slowly give
way to a frontal system over the mid section of the country.
The associated cold front will move across the area late Thursday
night into Friday morning. Weak high pressure briefly builds
Friday night. A cold front moves through Saturday, followed by
stronger high pressure Sunday into Monday. A complex frontal
system back to the west will approach during the middle of the
next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
A slight temperature adjustment downward this afternoon and
updated cloud cover for cirrus coming in from west and stratocu
across eastern LI and SE CT.

Aloft, an upper level ridge over the east coast this morning
moves into the western Atlantic through today. A broad northern
stream longwave trough will be move across the northern plains
and north of the Great Lakes, sending a frontal system slowly
eastward. Ahead of it, a deep southwesterly flow will transport
warmer, more moist air into the region the next couple of days.
The warmer airmass will allow for temperatures rise to above
seasonal normals in the lower to mid 40s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Temperatures tonight do not drop off that much as clouds
increase and warm air continues to moves into the area with
increasing moisture as the deep southwest flow continues around
the high and ahead of the longwave trough. A southerly stream
shortwave will be phasing with the northern trough Thursday as a
deepening surface low moves into the Ohio Valley be late in the
day. With the eastern ridge remaining in the western Atlantic
precipitation will hold off until late in the day. Despite
cloud cover warm advection continues Thursday with 850 mb
temperatures rising to 5 to 6 degrees C. Temperatures will be
well above seasonal normals by 15 to possibly as much as 20
degrees. Again used the warm MAV and NBM 75th percentile.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Models continue in good agreement with a deep western trough w/
closed low over the SW US today, shearing NE across the central
Plains Thu, and then into the eastern Great Lakes Thu Night,
ahead of the first in a series of northern stream shortwaves. In
response, a low pressure system develops across the southern
Plains tonight, and then gradually strengthens as it tracks NE
across the Mid Mississippi and Ohio River valleys Thu and up
through Western NY Thu Night. Deep SW flow will have an
anomalously mild and moist airmass advecting into the region Thu
into Thu Night ahead of a trailing strong cold front.

Confidence is increasing in a period of strong wind gusts and
moderate to heavy rain Thu Night into Friday morning. Potential
for damaging wind gusts exists across E LI and far SE CT.

Ahead of the cold front a strong LLJ (65-80kt@950mb) is
signaled to develop across eastern coastal areas late Thu Night
into early Friday morning. As is typical for this time of year
with water temps in the lower 40s, the challenge is how much of
the llj will be able to mix down in a strongly inverted low-
level environment. As is typical, GFS indicating a slightly
deeper mixed layer, with potential for 50 kt gusts across E
LI/SE CT, while NAM more strongly inverted indicating gust
potential of 35-40 kt. Reality tends to lie in between in terms
of mixing, with more clarity expected as this event gets into
the window of CAM guidance today. NBM has trended slightly
downward with gust magnitude from 24 hrs ago, with 4.0
indicating 40kt gust potential for LI and CT, while version 4.1
showing a 45-55 kt potential for LI/CT (highest for E LI and far
SE CT. Confidence continues to be high in a wind advisory event
Thu Night along the coast, including NYC (45-55mph), with
potential for damaging high winds gusts (55-65mph) for E LI and
far SE CT. The timing for peak strong to high wind gusts
continues to center around 6-12z Fri.

Based on the signal for 50kt wind gust potential from NBM 4.1
and deeper mixed layer GFS across E LI/far SE CT, and strength
of llj, will issue a high wind watch for this area. This high
wind potential for Thu Night/early Fri should be able to be
refined today into tonight as it becomes better resolved by the
CAMs, in addition to the extent of higher confidence strong wind
(wind advisory) potential for the remainder of the coast.

In terms of heavy rain potential, deep layered lift of a +3-4
STD PWAT gulf moisture plume, will present potential for a 3-6
hr window of heavy rain late Thu Night. The limiting factor for
heavy rainfall amounts will be quick movement of the cold front
through the area, racing ahead of shortwave forcing, and weak
instability at best. Medium range ensemble spread has decreased
at bit for much of the area to 1/2 to 1 inches of rainfall, but
seeing some potential for 1 to 1 1/4" in the NAM, which seems
reasonable based on available moisture and weak instability. CAM
guidance over the next 48 hrs should provide higher confidence
on the heavy rainfall potential. Steadier rainfall timing
beginning from west to east Thursday evening, with a period of
heavy rain possible late Thu Night, and ending very late
Thursday night into Friday morning from west to east.

The cold front pushes through Fri AM, with winds shifting to
W/NW. Potential for wind advisory gusts of 40-50mph Friday
morning areawide with wind shift and immediately in wake of
strong cold front as lapse rates rapidly steepen/deepen. Gusts
should settle into the 30 to 35 mph range for the afternoon. It
will be drying out with sunshine returning quickly, and temps
dropping through the day (50s AM to 30s and lower 40s pm)

The upper level trough will begin to pivot through later on
Saturday. A cold front will swing through and reinforce the
seasonably cold air for Saturday night into Sunday. Look for dry
conditions with temperatures running a bit below normal. Upper
level ridging will then start to work back in to begin next week
on Monday. The question is whether any energy escapes from a
closed low getting re-established in the West-Southwestern
states towards the end of the period. Some global guidance hints
at some energy breaking through and approaching the area on a
SW flow aloft as early as Tuesday morning. Model consensus has
much of the energy hanging back and likely not impacting the
area as far as rain chances until later Tuesday or Tuesday
night. Temperatures will be warming up after Sunday, and should
continue to warm into the middle of next week.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
High pressure moves east today. A warm front passes well to the
north of the terminals tonight.

VFR conditions expected through the TAF period, however MVFR
cigs potentially occur over KISP/KGON for a few hours this
afternoon. Potential for stratus mainly east of the city
terminals tonight/early Thurs AM as well.

S winds 10-15G20kt. S winds will remain 10-15kt through
tonight, but gusts subside in the early evening. The subsiding
of gusts, but increasing winds aloft, will present a low level
wind shear potential with SW flow 40-45 kt at 2kft AGL tonight
into Thurs morning.

 ...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...

Occasional gusts 15-19kt possible this afternoon at KEWR/KTEB.
Slight chc tempo cigs 3000ft at KJFK this afternoon.
SW flow near 40 kt at 2kft AGL 18z Thurs thru 00z Fri.

.OUTLOOK FOR 18Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY...
.Thursday...S gusts around 25 kt. SW winds around 40 kt at 2kft
AGL.
.Thursday night...Rain with MVFR/IFR. Occasional LIFR possible.
Slight chance of a tstm. SSW/S wind gusts 35-45kt likely for coastal
terminals. Peak gusts up to 50-55 kt possible, particularly
KISP/KGON. LLWS with SW winds 50-60kt at 2 kft AGL, SW winds
65-75 kt at 2 kft AGL east of NYC terminals.
.Friday...Improving conditions with VFR by late morning/early
afternoon. W-SW wind gusts 30-40kt in the morning, shifting NW with
wind gusts 25-30 kt by late morning. Gusts decrease closer to 20 kt
by end of day.
.Saturday...Mainly VFR. SW wind gusts around 20-25 kt.
.Sunday...VFR. SW wind gusts near 15 kt.
.Monday...VFR.

.MARINE...
With high pressure departing into the western Atlantic and a
low passing to the north today into tonight the pressure
gradient will be increasing between the two systems. Southerly
winds will persist and increase this afternoon into tonight with
gusts on the ocean and Long Island bays reaching SCA levels
this afternoon, and the eastern Sound reaching SCA levels by
tonight. SCA conditions continue on the ocean waters and bays,
and the extreme eastern Sound tonight through Thursday. With
winds and gusts increasing further during Thursday as a second
wave of low pressure approaches to the west gust may reach SCA
levels late Thursday afternoon on New York Harbor, and the
western Long Island Sound. However, will not issue an advisory
as winds and gusts will be increasing into Thursday night,
potentially to gale and storm force.

S to SW winds will increase on Thursday, with gale conditions likely
all waters Thu Night and potential for storm force winds across
ocean waters east of Fire Island inlet and eastern nearshore waters.
NW gales possible Fri AM in wake of cold frontal passage, falling to
SCA for the afternoon.

High ocean seas of 12 to 16 ft likely to build Thu Night into Fri
AM, falling Friday, but likely remaining at SCA levels into Saturday
Night.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
1/2" to 1" of rain is likely, locally 1" to 1 1/4" possible
late Thursday into early Friday. Most of this falling in less
than 6 hr period. Localized minor urban and poor drainage
flooding is possible.

If higher end rainfall amounts are realized, some minor
flooding of quick reacting small streams in Hackensack/Passaic
river basin of NE NJ is possible based on 3-6hr FFG of 1 to 1
1/4". In addition, will have to monitor for localized ice jam
flooding potential across our far interior river/streams with
mild temps and rainfall allowing for ice break-up and increased
streamflow.
