.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will remain north and west of the area through
today. An intensifying low pressure system will pass east of the
area on Friday. Cold high pressure builds out of eastern Canada
and across the area for the weekend. A developing low over the
southern states on Sunday will track up the spine of the
Appalachians, passing just west of the area Sunday night into
Monday. Weak high pressure builds in for Tuesday, followed by an
approaching clipper low for midweek.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Clearing has occurred across Long Island and temperatures have
responded, rising into the upper 40s to near 50 degrees.
Otherwise the forecast remains on track.

A couple of boundaries will remain back to our west for today
and tonight. Mid and high levels clouds will move through the
region from time to time this afternoon with a SW flow aloft.

For tonight high clouds will continue to be in place. The winds
will remain light with the area being between a boundary to our
west and a boundary out over the Atlantic, thus the pressure
gradient will remain very weak. The mid and high clouds will
remain much of the time for tonight as BUFKIT forecast sounding
indicate higher RH getting down and even a bit below 10 kft late
in the overnight and into early Friday morning, especially
further east. Kept temperatures up a bit in rural locations and
minimized to some degree the amount of radiational cooling. Lows
will be a bit above normal despite the light winds as there
should be a good deal of mid level clouds making it difficult to
radiate out. Lows will range mainly in the upper half of the
20s to the north and northwest, with 30s across coastal
sections.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
On Friday upper level energy consolidates off the SE and lower Mid
Atlantic coast. This will lead to low pressure developing quickly
and intensifying off the coast. The system will move northeast and
well east of the benchmark on later on Friday. The winds will
increase during Friday morning, and will really pick up for the
afternoon and evening. Gusts of 30 to 35 mph appear likely with a
gusty northerly flow along the backside of intensifying low pressure
which will move off to the northeast into Friday evening. A good
deal of clouds, especially further east across the area is expected
on Friday. Morning clouds further west will give way to sunshine
late in the day, with clouds hanging in for much of the day on
Friday for eastern sections. The western edge of the precipitation
shield from the offshore storm system will come close to far eastern
sections, thus a slight chance to low end chance POPs remain in
place for eastern zones of CT and Eastern LI. Any precipitation
would likely be in the form of rain, but could be mixed in with
snow, especially as the system pulls away late in the day with no
accumulation expected. Temperatures will initially be in the middle
30s well inland, to the lower 40s for the city and the coast. But
another round of very cold air will begin filtering into the region
late in the day as the departing storm system to the northeast
begins to wrap in the cold air. By late in the day temperatures will
begin falling, with a noticeable difference into the evening as the
colder air arrives.

For Friday night another round of arctic air moves into the area.
This shot of cold will rival the round of cold that was experienced
earlier in the week. It may actually feel and get a few degrees
colder this time around. Wind chills by Saturday morning will be
below zero across the entire region, with perhaps far northern zones
flirting with wind chill advisory criteria as wind chills could get
below -10, but may be short of -15. Clear skies are expected Friday
night with a sharp northerly wind.

On Saturday sunshine is expected, especially early on. High clouds
then start to work in for the afternoon from southwest to northeast.
Temperatures despite the sunshine will struggle to reach 20, and may
fall short. Wind chills will run 0 to 10 above throughout the
day.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A deepening low over the Tennessee Valley Saturday night will track
along or just east of the Appalachians Sunday, taking a track to the
west of the forecast area late Sunday night into Monday. The 00Z
operational run of the GFS, ECMWF, and Canadian are in very good
agreement with the surface low track with about a 980 mb low
occluding just west of the area during this time. What has been odd,
is that the 00Z GEFS mean and most of its member low tracks are
offshore, with the mean passing near the 40N...70W benchmark Monday
morning. About 24h ago, we saw this with both the GEFS and EPS.
However, the EPS and Canadian ensembles are both now closely in line
with their operational counterpart.

Thus, unless we see some big change in the low track as the Pac
energy comes onshore today, the forecast area will be on the warm
side of this system with a quick transition to rain at the coast and
a slower progression to rain for most inland locations. Locations
well north and west may be able to stay mainly snow (western half of
Orange) as the low occludes Sunday night and the area dry slots.
Coastal locations will see the boundary layer warm quickly with a
strong E/SE flow gusting in excess of 30 mph at coastal locations
Sunday night. The 00Z GFS brings a 60 to 70 kt LLJ across coastal
locations during this time. In fact, Sunday morning lows will be in
the single digits for most locations, quickly rising through the day
with the flow off the ocean.

The timing of the precipitation to begin looks to be late Sunday
afternoon/early evening at the coast and then quickly overspreading
the remainder of the area. For inland areas, there could be a quick
dump of heavy snow, especially the farther north and west as one
goes. Strong thermal forcing will be present as a warm, moist
conveyor belt off the Atlantic throws moisture over a retreating
arctic airmass. Much of the global guidance is producing 1 to 1.5
inches of rainfall through the event with PWAT values approaching an
inch (90th percentile). Warning level snow of 6 inches or more will
be possible from interior SW CT west across the Lower Hudson Valley.
Of course, any subtle track change will have impacts on how much
cold air is retained or eroded as the storm system approaches the
area.

Conditions dry out Monday afternoon as the low lifts up into
northern NY state and northern New England. Gusty NW winds are
forecast on the backside of the system as colder air filters back
into the region. Weak high pressure then builds in on Tuesday with a
possible clipper low impacting the area midweek.

Low pressure begins to develop off the Southeast coast and rapidly
deepen well offshore late tonight into Friday. A strong low
pressure will impact the terminals Sunday into Monday with
strong winds and the likelihood of rain and snow.

Otherwise,,,VFR through the TAF period. Low chance of MVFR/IFR
late tonight at KGON into Friday morning as low-level moisture
rotates inland from the off-shore low.

Light and variable flow is likely to continue through much
of the day. Winds may become around 5 kt out of the E-SE near
the coast into the afternoon. A light NE flow then should
develop this evening before increasing late tonight. NW-N Gusts
to 30kt possible by midday Friday and continuing into the
evening.

     NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...

Wind direction likely to end up variable through this evening.

.MARINE...
Based on latest guidance for winds and gusts Friday and Friday
night have increased both, with gales now more likely across
the remainder of the forecast waters except New York Harbor.
Decided to issue the gale watch with the noon update, rather
than potential to go right to warning.

Otherwise, winds and gusts on the waters this afternoon have
been a couple of knots lower than the current forecast.

Sub SCA conditions take place for today and tonight as the
waters will remain between frontal systems with a light pressure
gradient. A storm will start to develop offshore late tonight
and into Friday. This will result in the ocean approaching SCA
conditions towards Friday morning. By Friday afternoon the winds
and seas ramp up, thus a Gale Watch has been issued for all the
forecast waters except New York Harbor for Friday and Friday
night with an intensifying storm to the east which pulls away
Friday night. Small craft conditions are expected during the
time across New York Harbor and the SCA remains in effect.
By Saturday afternoon the western waters will begin to fall
below SCA conditions, with small craft conditions possibly
continuing throughout the day across the eastern waters.

Gales will then become likely on the waters Sunday night into
Monday as an intense low pressure system tracks to the west of
the waters. There is even a chance of storm force gusts on the
ocean waters. Seas on the ocean by daybreak Monday may be as
high 12 to 17 ft. NW Gales may linger on the backside of the
storm into Monday night, especially on the ocean waters.

.HYDROLOGY...
No hydrologic impacts are expected through the upcoming weekend.

The Wallkill River at Gardiner stage may be impacted by ice.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Coastal flood impacts are a possibility for late in the weekend and
into early Monday. There remains a lot of uncertainty with the
precise track of a storm coming up from the south late Sunday
into Monday. This will impact water levels and the probability
of exceeding some minor coastal flood benchmarks on Sunday, and
potentially some moderate coastal flood benchmarks for the
Monday AM high tide cycle.
