No changes with this morning's update. Forecast is in good shape.
In regards to the bitterly cold air coming this way tonight, some
of these morning numbers coming out of the northern and central plains
behind this front are eye-popping. Negative teens as far south as
the Iowa/Missouri state line. Minus 42 in Wyoming. Silly cold and
lots of that is coming this way. Not minus 42, but we're gonna
see some dashes in front of mercury readings by morning.

Biggest emphasis is really on wind chill values tomorrow morning
and what that can do with prolonged exposure. Minus 20 to minus 30
wind chills can cause frostbite in 15-20 minutes, so the best
suggestion is to stay inside. If you have to go out, be sure
you're covering all exposed skin. On top of that, with actual
mercury readings near or below zero, put a blanket in the car. If
the car breaks down, you'll need to stay warm.

We'll check timing with this afternoon's full forecast package,
but not expecting much of a change with spatial or temporal snowfall
accumulation totals this evening.

Quite mild across Middle Tennessee this morning with current
temperatures in the upper 30s on the Plateau and mid to upper 40s
elsewhere. Radar shows a few showers as well, and these widely
scattered light showers will continue this morning before
increasing in coverage this afternoon as the Arctic front
approaches.

Speaking of, Arctic cold front is currently near an OKC to COU
line and racing southeast, which still puts it on track per the
latest HRRR to reach northwest Stewart County around 22Z,
downtown Nashville around 0015Z, and be east of our Plateau
counties by 03Z. Temperatures will likely drop 20 degrees or more
in the first 1-2 hours after fropa, with rain very quickly
transitioning to snow due to the extreme CAA at all levels. CAMs
such as the HRRR suggest there will be a 1-4 hour window for snow
accumulation after fropa, with the longest duration in our
northwest and northern counties and shortest in the south.
Blending all the latest guidance and WPC snow totals still show
little change from previous forecasts, ranging from a few tenths
in our southern counties, around an inch in Nashville, and up to
2 inches near the Kentucky border. Orographic lift on the west
edge of the Plateau could also squeeze out some higher amounts in
the typically favorable areas around Monterey and Jamestown. Went
ahead and added a few more counties in our south to the Winter
Weather Advisory since they could see up to an inch of snow.
Regardless, any snow that falls along with leftover water from
today's rains will freeze to roads and other surfaces, with
hazardous travel conditions anticipated areawide beginning this
evening and continuing into Friday morning. Although it will stay
very cold through the weekend, the very dry Arctic air and any
solar radiation should help sublimate some of the ice/snow on
roads by Friday afternoon and especially on Saturday, helping
improve travel conditions.

Pressure rises behind the Arctic front will also be quite
impressive, which could cause winds to briefly gust above our
wind advisory criteria of 40+ mph. However, most gusts will stay
in the 30 to 40 mph range, so have held off on a wind advisory
for now so to not clog up the headlines. As far as temperatures,
NBM continues to trend even colder for Friday morning
temperatures, with lows now below zero for much of the forecast
area. If this pans out, this will be a 50+ degree temperatures
drop from Thursday afternoon's highs in the 50s to Friday morning.
The colder forecast temps are also lowering wind chills across
the area even more, with some locations potentially seeing wind
chills as low as 25 below zero. Have updated the Wind Chill
Warning with these latest numbers but no other changes were made.
By Friday afternoon, wind chills improve but still stay near or
below zero, and a Wind Chill Advisory will likely be needed for
the Friday afternoon through Saturday morning timeframe. Held off
on issuing one for now - also to not clog up the already numerous
hazards. Needless to say, it will be very dangerous for people and
animals to be outdoors Thursday night and Friday.

Temperatures slowly warm up over the weekend as the Arctic airmass
slowly modifies, although it will stay very cold with lows in the
single digits and highs only in the teens and 20s. Temps look to
finally rise above freezing by midday Monday, which would mark
roughly 3.5 days of below freezing temperatures. A continued and
more significant warmup will ensue the rest of next week as upper
level winds become more southwesterly, with highs back in the 50s
by Wednesday and 60s possible by the end of the week - along with
our next chance for rain.

Ceilings are low across the area with most terminals under MVFR
conditions ahead of the artic front. LIFR ceilings are currently
in place at CSV, improving to MVFR around 04Z and staying in place
for the remainder of the TAF period. Winds are westerly and
gusting between 20-30 knots across the area. As rain changes to
snow this evening, visibilities will drop significantly to 1 1/2-
2SM, improving between 06-08Z. VFR ceilings will be restored for
all terminals by the end of the TAF period with the exception of
CSV, which will remain under MVFR ceilings.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for Middle Tennessee.

.DAY ONE...Today and tonight.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for central and northern
Middle Tennessee this evening and tonight. Light rain will develop
across Middle Tennessee today, with the rain rapidly changing to
light snow late this afternoon and evening before ending. Snow
accumulations ranging from a dusting in southern Middle Tennessee up
to 2 inches near the Kentucky border are possible. Any snow
accumulation or leftover rain water on area roadways will quickly
freeze into ice Thursday night as temperatures drop, causing
hazardous travel conditions overnight and Friday.

A Wind Chill Warning also remains in effect for all of Middle
Tennessee from late this evening through midday Friday. Gusty winds
up to 40 mph will cause wind chills to drop as low as 25 degrees
below zero at times. Such cold wind chills could rapidly cause
hypothermia, as well as cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little
as 30 minutes. Outdoor pets and other animals should be brought
indoors or given extra protection and shelter to survive these cold
wind chills.

Dangerously cold temperatures are also expected across Middle
Tennessee tonight, with temperatures rapidly falling from the 50s to
near zero. Such a rapid temperature drop combined with gusty winds up
to 40 mph could cause exposed or unprotected pipes to rupture, as
well as result in isolated power outages.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.

Dangerously cold temperatures will continue across Middle Tennessee
through early Monday, with lows in the single digits and highs only
in the 10s and 20s. Temperatures are expected to remain below
freezing for up to 85 hours, which could cause exposed or unprotected
pipes to rupture, as well as result in isolated power outages.
