Issued at 827 PM CST Tue Dec 20 2022 A few scattered clouds are passing just to our east / southeast, but not a whole lot going on over our area. Tomorrow will be much like today, with AM temps starting out in the upper 20s to 30s and afternoon highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s. && .SHORT TERM... (This afternoon through Thursday Night) Issued at 202 PM CST Tue Dec 20 2022 First few days of the forecast look rather uneventful. The earlier Gulf system brought a few light rain showers to our far south. High pressure will now attempt to build in tonight with some decrease in cloudiness expected. This will be brief however as the mid and high cloudiness will be on the rebound on Wednesday. Winds will quickly turn southerly with some shower activity returning for Wednesday night. The rain chances will increase on Thursday, ahead of an approaching arctic boundary. Look for rainfall amounts into early Thursday evening to average between one tenth and four tenths of an inch. After lows tonight of 25 to 30, high temperatures the next two days will be in the lower to mid 50s. Thursday night will mark the passage of the upcoming arctic front. Timing of this boundary has trended sooner just a touch as opposed to 24 hours ago. It now looks like 5 PM or so in our far northwest, 7P to 8Pm Nashville and I-65 corridor, 9PM to 11 PM Plateau. Given the rapid height fall, the cool down will be especially dramatic along the Plateau. As for the snowfall potential, still looking at a fast but rather brief transition from rain to snow. This will commence with the fropa itself. Upper low will track across IN with sfc low displacement about 300 miles to the northeast. Wrap around snowfall looks to be the extent for the mid state. NVA looks a touch neutralized so it looks like maybe up to 1 inch from the Highland Rim eastward through the northern Plateau. Elsewhere, generally a trace to one half inch will be possible. Scattered Snow flurries will continue into much of your Friday. The bigger concern of course will be the bitterly cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Models are slightly colder than 24 hours ago. Both the Euro and GFS solutions carry a -24C 850 mb temp into northern middle TN early Friday. The deep thermal troughing shifts across the Plateau by afternoon, so that area may fail to reach 10 degrees for a high. Otw, around sunrise Friday, temps will range from zero to 7 degrees above zero. Highs by afternoon will reach 8F to 15F. Winds are going to be a huge factor. Strongest winds will occur with and just after the passage of the arctic boundary. However, wind speeds will remain elevated into Friday morning as a rather tight pressure gradient will prevail. That said, speeds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts of 30 mph will be common place Friday morning. Coldest wind chill values will generally range from minus 10F south to minus 20F across the north. For this reason, a wind chill watch has been issued for the entire mid state, effective from 06Z Friday until 21Z Friday. Note that a brief 2 to 3 hour window of wind advisory criteria cannot be ruled out when the fropa occurs. We will certainly be looking at that a bit closer as Thursday night approaches. Note that the record low maximum temperature on Friday for Nashville BNA is 14 degrees set back in 1989. Depending on the timing of the arctic fropa, this record may be broken. It will be close at midnight and possibly again Friday afternoon as temps try to warm into the 10 to 15 degree range. && .LONG TERM... (Friday through next Tuesday) Issued at 202 PM CST Tue Dec 20 2022 Moving on, the extended period looks rather cold, but dry for the most part. It looks like we will finally rise above freezing on Monday, but still below normal into Tuesday. The upper level pattern still looks a touch active, though the NBM and Euro are dry. Once temperatures fall below freezing Thursday night, they will stay below freezing through the holiday weekend. This extended period of below freezing temperatures could cause exposed or unprotected pipes to rupture as well as result in isolated power outages. Dangerous wind chills as low as 15 below zero will also be dangerous to people and animals that are outdoors for any extended period of time. Light rain will spread across Middle Tennessee on Thursday and changeover to snow by Thursday night.
