.SYNOPSIS...Chilly morning temperatures expected Thursday
morning. Chances for rain Thursday night into Friday morning, with
highest amounts along the North Bay coastal ranges. Another
system will bring even more rain again Saturday into Sunday. Cold
morning temperatures are expected at the start of next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:15 AM PST Thursday...Morning temperatures
are bit warmer than anticipated in parts of the region, with
temperatures reaching mid to low 40s. Therefore, we will continue
to evaluate through the day on changing the minimum temperatures
for tonight into tomorrow morning. The forecast remains on track
with two systems heading for our area with one expected to enter
our region starting this afternoon into tomorrow morning and with
the second system starting Saturday into Sunday. The system over
the weekend appears to be stronger. The timing of the heaviest
band of rainfall will be monitored, as there is some uncertainty.
Radar has been switched to the precip mode as we prepare to see
rainfall starting this afternoon. Confidence continues to grow for
no freeze warning/watch at this moment, as we see increasing high
clouds in the models from the upcoming front, which will allow
for increased insolation.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 04:05 AM PST Thursday...Active weather on tap
for the Bay Area and Central Coast through early next week as two
storm systems move through the region.

Storm number 1: The longwave wave pattern aloft indicates an upper
level trough approaching the West Coast early this morning. At the
surface a cold front is also approaching the West Coast. As the
system to the north approaches high clouds continue to increase
over the region. A slight uptick in winds combined with more upper
level clouds have led to a warmer night, especially the North Bay
where temperatures are running 5-10 degrees warmer than 24 hours
ago. Even with the high level clouds and warmer temperatures it's
still chilly with temperatures in the 30s to lower 40s. In
addition to the warmer temperatures this morning some fog will be
possible over the inland valleys. Napa for instance has been
reporting dense fog for most of the night. The aforementioned
cold front will continue to move E and S toward the Bay Area
through the day. Latest timing puts the front in the North Bay
late this afternoon. There is a low chance for a few showers
ahead of the main front, but steadier rain won't arrive until the
afternoon commute. The front is progressive and will move N to S
late Thursday afternoon through early Friday morning. It does
appear as the front moves southward it loses some steam with
interior Monterey/San Benito see little to no precip. NBM
probabilities shows highest likelihood >0.25" for N Bay, SF Bay,
and coastal mts. The passing front will usher in some breezy
winds too.

A few lingering showers will be possible early Friday, but mainly
over Monterey/San Benito. Otherwise, a brief break in the action
so to speak for Friday with seasonably cool temperatures.

Storm number 2: A much stronger and wetter storm will impact the
region as early as late Friday night, but biggest impacts will
occur on Saturday. As an upper level ridge becomes highly
amplified over Alaska an upper level low on the east side of the
ridge will descend southward toward the West Coast, including CA,
Friday into Saturday. This feature will have more upper level jet
support and moisture to work with than Storm 1. It has some
similarities to the storm that rolled through about a week ago.
In fact, as the low drops south it taps into some marginal sub-
tropical moisture. This moisture plume of nearly one inch gets
pointed at the Bay Area Bay and Central Coast on Saturday. Latest
AR guidance continues to put this plume in the weak Atmospheric
River category. This also coincides with the Extreme Forecast
Index showing higher than normal water vapor flux, but far from
extreme values. That being said, there will still be a period of
moderate to locally heavy rain with the fropa Saturday into
Sunday. Latest WPC excessive rainfall outlook has the entire
coastal area in a marginal risk for flooding on Saturday. The
National Water Model also indicates a brief increase in stream
flows on area creeks and streams. No main stem river issues, but a
rise on some rivers will be possible. Similar to the last weak AR
some ponding on roads and minor nuisance flooding is possible.
Rainfall amounts 2-4" with a jackpot of 5" for North Bay and
Coastal Mts with 1-2.5" elsewhere from Friday night through
Sunday. Another form of precip will be snow. The fropa will drop
snow levels late Saturday into Sunday. Accumulation snow is
possible above about 4,000 feet. Half a foot seems reasonable for
the Santa Lucia Range with less elsewhere. Biggest snow event of
the season so far still seems likely.

The fropa will have have instability associated with it as well.
Thunderstorms have been added to the forecast Saturday afternoon
and Saturday night. If thunderstorms do develop small hail will
be possible. Will also need to monitor rainfall rates near any of
the burn scars. SPC Day 3 Outlook has coastal NorCal in a general
mention for thunder.

Finally, impacts from the increasing winds. Hi-res models and
higher end values of the NBM show gusty winds ahead of and with
the fropa Friday night and Saturday. Winds will be strongest over
the coastal waters, coastline, higher peaks. EFI shows above
normal winds for this time of year and higher confidence on it
occurring. After coordinating with neighboring offices held off
on a Wind Advisory at this time, but day shift will likely issue
one to highlight the strong winds. Winds finally ease on Sunday.

A few lingering showers and high level snow showers will be
possible through Monday. Drier, but colder weather returns for the
rest of next week.

Please stay weather aware over the next few days as two storms
will impact the region.

.AVIATION...As of 09:59 AM Thursday...For the 18Z TAFs. High
clouds have moved in over the entire region as the next frontal
boundary gets closer. These high clouds are obscuring lower
visibility where KOAK was reporting MIFG and even KSTS is
currently BCFG and lower vis at KAPC. However, as the front moves
through lower vis and cigs will be a result of the incoming rain.
Moderate rainfall is expected as the boundary pushes through, and
chances for heavier rainfall was converted to a TEMPO to assist on
projected timing. The biggest change to this TAF package is the
increased in southerly winds mixing down to the surface providing
stronger southerly wind gusts, as supported by the HRRR and our
local WRF. Rain should arrive in the North Bay in the next 2
hours, SF Bay by 00Z and then move southward after 03Z. Most
models are suggesting that by the time the front moves over the
South SF Bay, it starts to break up, which is why the Central
Coast terminals are kept at -SHRA for more showery activity. Light
winds and higher clouds for Friday morning.

For your situational awareness: Late Friday, the next frontal
system will approach the North Bay. This system is expected to
impact the SF Bay Area mainly on Saturday. It is projected to have
heavier rainfall rates and stronger wind/wind gusts.

Vicinity of SFO...Light southerly winds with VFR cigs, despite the
influx of higher clouds over the terminal. LLWS was left in the
TAF for when the front is in the North Bay, but as the boundary
approaches the terminal, expect southerly winds in crease and mix
down creating stronger gusts at the terminal. Models have
projected gusts as low as 20 knots and as high as 31 knots, but
mostly around 25 knots for the better part of the early evening.
Rain is expected after 00Z, but moderate confidence in the
periods of heaviest rain around 03Z. Winds will switch to the
northwest behind the front and rain tapers off rather quickly.
Chance for light southerly winds to return at the end of the TAF
period ahead of the next system.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.

Monterey Bay...VFR through Thursday afternoon. Chances for LLWS
were left in the TAF as the front approaches. Rain showers are
expected Thursday night and lingering into early Friday morning.
MVFR cigs are expected to remain through the morning commute
Friday. VFR for Friday.

.MARINE...as of 08:39 AM PST Thursday...Light rain is already
starting to move over the northern waters Thursday morning as
winds out of the south are starting to increase. Rain will
increase through the afternoon as the front moves southward over
the waters. Winds will switch over to the northwest behind the
front Thursday night in Friday. A stronger storm system will
arrive late Friday bringing heavy rain, gale force winds, steep
wind waves, and isolated thunderstorms through Saturday. Unsettled
weather will continue Sunday into Monday despite weaker winds.
