.SYNOPSIS...Cloudy and cool conditions prevail through Thursday.
High pressure starts to gradually build on Thursday starting a
minor warming trend for the weekend and early next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 01:53 PM PDT Tuesday...Temperatures are
running a couple degrees cooler today than Monday. Coastal
profilers are currently estimating the marine layer between 1700
and 1900 feet. Onshore flow is helping to keep temperatures cool,
with only 70s and 80s in the forecast for Tuesday afternoon. While
skies may momentarily be clear, after the sun sets, stratus
clouds will once again move inland as overnight lows return to the
50s and 60s. The robust marine will help suppress fire concerns
for most areas, but the highest peaks in the interior ranges will
still be dry overnight.
A weak, dry front will pass over the Bay Area Wednesday, in
association with an upper level trough passing. Cooler air behind
the front will lead to cooler than seasonal norms on Wednesday and
Thursday. As the trough approaches the coastline, it will perturb
the marine layer enough that it may result in light drizzle in
isolated spots along the immediate coastline, but not widespread
enough to put it in the official forecast. But otherwise, the
trough will harmlessly pass through and move northward toward
Western Montana.
Behind the trough, high pressure will slowly grow and temperatures
will gradually warm into the weekend. While the ridge will have
more influence over the area, the trough in Montana will not be
forgotten about. That is because on Thursday, it will make a turn
and start drifting southward toward Denver on Friday. The result
that relates to California's weather is that the broad scale wind
pattern will turn to the North. While offshore winds in late
September/early October are common in these parts, the large scale
gradient between the low and our area is weak. Winds over the
interior North Bay Mountains will increase from the North to
around 25 mph. However, fuels responded well to the recent rains
and the winds are not expected to be overly strong so there
remains no fire concerns at this time.
Outside of that, the ridge sets over California to keep warmer
quieter conditions over the area for a while. Long range models do
not have another trough appearing in the Eastern Pacific until
Thursday October 6th.

.AVIATION...As of 11:27 AM Tuesday... For the 18Z TAFs. Marine
stratus continues to build as the trough moves over our CWA, which
brings a combination of LIFR/IFR/MVFR level cigs throughout the
TAF period. Coastal profilers show the marine layer depth is
~2,000 feet deep at Fort Ord and Bodega Bay, which brings high
confidence of cloud cover. Satellite shows a slower clearing of
the cigs compared to yesterday, except for inland TAF sites so
expect cigs to clear near 20Z-22Z for most TAF sites, whereas some
inland sites may clear near 18z-20z. As the marine layer builds,
the ceilings should start to rise to higher altitudes. Therefore,
low confidence in lower cigs at terminals with higher chances near
coastal TAF sites.
There is lower confidence for low visibility and fog at KMRY and
KSTS due to lack of model agreement. Therefore, the TAFs do not
reflect low SM of visibility for these sites, but there is a
possibility for low visibility.Breezy NW winds into the afternoon
ranging from 8-15 kts at various TAF sites,especially near coastal
gaps. Then winds lower to 4-6 kts by Tuesday night into the early
Wednesday morning.
Vicinity of SFO... Satellite shows clouds linger a bit but models
still show clearing near 18Z with VFR conditions. Winds are breezy
and are expected to become gusty between 17 to 24 kts starting this
afternoon. Cigs are forecasted to remain VFR for the TAF period.
KSFO Bridge Approach... Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay... IFR conditions over KMRY and VFR conditions over
KSNS. Low confidence on fog and visibility for KMRY for Tuesday
night into early morning. Some models show low cigs tonight, but
there was lack of model agreement but higher confidence of cloud
cover over KMRY from the marine layer. Breezy to moderate onshore
winds this afternoon then lowers to 4-5 kts into the night.

.MARINE...as of 08:31 AM PDT Tuesday...Northwest winds across
most of the waters through Wednesday. Stronger and gustier winds
will develop along the coast south of Pigeon Point and south of
Point Sur. Increasing northwest winds late Wednesday and Thursday
combining with a stronger northwest swell, will result in steep,
hazardous seas, as wave heights may exceed ten feet. A series of
moderate period northwest swells continues through the week along
with a longer period southerly swell.
