.SYNOPSIS...Only minor fluctuations through the weekend and into
next week with near normal temperatures. Weather pattern remains
summer-like with morning low clouds and fog followed by afternoon
sunshine.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:35 PM PDT Friday...Temperatures were
similar to a few degrees warmer today compared to yesterday.
Hottest spots across the CWA were once again in interior Monterey
and San Benito Counties, where triple digits were reached. 90s
were common in the interior valleys, and 60s/70s/80s along the
coast and the Bay Shoreline.
A fairly mild evening, with our warmest spots in the far interior
valleys and at elevations above 1000 feet, which is the
approximate depth of the marine layer. Satellite imagery shows
minimal stratus over land and over the coastal waters, but some
development is observed over Pt Reyes and along the San Mateo
coast. Coastal stratus will expand overnight into the bays and
near coastal valleys. Made some adjustments to the near term cloud
cover forecast to better reflect current obs, but otherwise no
major changes. Forecast retains slight chance of drizzle in areas
of clouds and some patchy fog. Clearing of any clouds and fog in
the morning, leading to a pleasant mid-summer day with seasonable
temperatures.
Only other item of note is the rapidly expanding Oak Fire, which
ignited this afternoon and is spreading rapidly in Mariposa
County, reaching the Sierra National Forest this evening. This is
the third wildfire in that county in the last two weeks,
including the Washburn and Agua Fires. A stark reminder of the
ongoing drought and extremely dry fuels, particularly in the
interior valleys and mountains.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 12:55 PM PDT Friday...
Today and Tonight:
A mid to upper level anticyclone will remain centered over the Four
Corners region with upstream troughing from the northeast Pacific
through the Northwest. A dampening perturbation will cross far
NorCal this afternoon causing a subsequent deepening of the marine
layer into this evening. This will bring a slight cooling to
temperatures for this afternoon with highs near the coast in the 60s
and 70s. Away from the marine influence look for the interior
valleys and areas bordering the Sacramento Valley to climb into the
80s and 90s with a few lower 100s in the "usual spots". Otherwise
look for clearing towards the coast by early afternoon with a quick
onset of clouds, fog, and perhaps some drizzle into the early to mid
evening hours. Lows tonight will be a bit cooler as well, with lower
to mid 50s across much of the lower elevations with some lower to
mid 60s in the hills.
Saturday through Monday:
Some erosion will occur along the northern and western periphery of
the expansive mid-upper ridge as weak troughing envelops the eastern
Pacific. Meanwhile somewhat breezier onshore flow will occur as
surface high pressure strengthens over the eastern Pacific and the
pressure gradient tightens. This will promote a continuation of
cooler temperatures along the coast with decent overnight humidity
recoveries. Some drizzle is possible within the marine layer at
times as well. Coastal highs in the 60s to 70s are expected, with
70s and 80s farther inland. Once again some of our warmer spots in
southern Monterey and San Benito Counties will rise well into the
90s each afternoon. Lows will remain seasonal in the 50s and 60s.
Tuesday through Friday:
The upper flow pattern will become more amplified as the strong /
596 dm / mid-level ridge flexes into the northern Great Basin and
Pacific Northwest. This will force the storm track poleward towards
British Columbia with surface high pressure persisting over the
northeast Pacific. A heat dome across the interior west will push
towards northeast portions of our area with a subsequent increase in
afternoon high temperatures. However it still appears that onshore
flow should remain sufficient to keep readings from warming
substantially over the remainder of the area. Looking forward, it's
worth mentioning that the Climate Prediction Center has outlooked
far inland portions of our area with a slight risk for excessive
heat in the day 8-14 outlook (which starts around the end of our
extended forecast period). So keep up with those temperature
forecasts as we head into early August. Some uptick in mid to upper
moisture may also occur towards late week a residual monsoonal
moisture impinges on the area. That said, at this point it appears
the most likely forecast outcome will mainly be an increase in mid
to high level clouds. However we'll keep an eye out for any
potential changes going forward.

.AVIATION...as of 10:45 PM PDT Friday...For the 06Z TAFs. VFR but
satellite shows stratus is redeveloping near the coast as
forecasted. Stratus will reach KOAK/KMRY/KSNS by 08-09z tonight.
KOAK likely will see borderline MVFR/IFR cigs whereas IFR/LIFR
expected for Monterey Bay terminals. Stratus will likely not
reach North Bay terminals, but patchy fog development possible
again in the early morning, reducing visibility. Less confident to
see cigs at KSFO, but stratus lurks on the periphery. Northwest
winds increase by Saturday afternoon with winds around 10 to 15
kts across the region, but locally gusty around 20 kts. Models are
hinting at an earlier return of stratus Saturday evening (around
03-04z for Monterey Bay terminals).
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR until ~08z at KOAK with stratus expected to
fill into the SF Bay shortly. Marine layer is around 1000 feet
and onshore gradient is at +4 mb, so it is a similar setup tonight
compared to last night. With that, thinking is that SFO will
remain VFR, but TEMPO for IFR cigs included in the early morning
to account for chance of stratus intrusion via the San Bruno gap.
VFR expected Saturday with the return of breezy NW winds. Stratus
will return in a similar fashion Saturday night.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Likely remaining clear through the period
with FEW low clouds possible in the early morning hours.
Monterey Bay...VFR until 08z. To the north on the San Mateo
coastline, stratus has redeveloped and is currently trekking
southward and will fill into the Monterey Bay. IFR/LIFR/VLIFR
cigs and reduced visibility in the late night through the early
morning. Conditions will improve by 17-18z Saturday morning.
Moderate onshore flow around 10-15 kts expected tomorrow. Stratus
returns earlier Saturday evening around 03-04z.

.MARINE...as of 08:31 PM PDT Friday...Strong northwesterly winds
continue to generate steep fresh swell and hazardous conditions
for small craft. The strongest winds will persist near coastal
jets, particularly south of Point Sur and Pigeon Point where gale
force gusts are likely through much of the weekend. A long period
southerly swell will gradually diminish through the end of the
week. Lighter winds likely by Sunday afternoon.
