.SYNOPSIS...Much Colder Next Week, a chance of showers with snow
showers higher elevations Tuesday; a Special Weather Statement was
issued earlier today for the upcoming cooling trend. Cooling trend
starts Sunday in advance of a dry cold frontal passage. Much colder
by Monday with breezy northwest winds as the front moves through.
A chance of showers by Tuesday with snow levels around 2000 feet
but locally down to 1000 feet in heavier showers with small hail
possible. Clearing Tuesday night leads to a cold start Wednesday
morning with the coldest temperatures likely Thursday morning.
High pressure rebuilds Thursday afternoon into Friday with a
modest warming and drying trend.

mainly mild February day, average temperatures varied from zero
to 6 degrees above today's 30 year normal temperatures. Oakland's
high temperature 72 tied today's record high last set on this day

the 50s to lower 60s elsewhere, warmest in the hills due to a
temperature inversion; compression under lingering high pressure
resulting in a temperature inversion. On satellite stratus can be
seen moving southeastward along coastal Sonoma and Marin counties
and reaching/forming along coastal San Mateo county.

500 mb height ridging and anticyclonic flow will move southward
late tonight through Sunday, the leading edge of troughing will
edge in from the north replacing anticyclonic wind flow with
cyclonic flow (west to northwest winds aloft) beginning Sunday.
This along with the arrival of a surface cold front will open the
door to colder temperatures, especially night-time temperatures,
for the week ahead. The surface cold front is currently near the
Pacific Northwest and will sweep southward across the Bay Area and
north Central Coast late Sunday afternoon and evening.

The synoptic pattern for the week ahead is a classic set up for
minimal over water trajectory of arctic air from western Canada
coupled to (somewhat already modified) arctic air over the Gulf of
Alaska. A sharp 500 mb ridge located over Alaska becomes an
unstable ridge, jet stream winds can't stay aligned to the sharp
curvature of the ridge ultimately re-curving and carving out and
deepening the trough located immediately downstream in the
westerlies over the western states. This synoptic pattern drives
cold air southward, with a great amount of continental influence
reaching our cwa, retaining the cold air structure in the vertical
with only the air mass over the Pacific gradually becoming
modified (warmed) by heat transfer from the milder (much higher
heat capacity) ocean. Evaporation from the ocean's surface adds to
an otherwise dynamically cooling column of air within the trough
through upward vertical motion and expansion. Air mass instability
increases as the cold core of the low settles in from the north
and northeast furthering convective potential with showers and
lowering snow levels, including small hail steepening instability
i.e. convection. Overall, look for a cooling trend set to begin
Sunday with additional cold air arriving especially through
Tuesday. Highs Tuesday will struggle to get to the lower 50s since
the door to cold air by then will have swung wide open, temperatures
in the hills/mtns likely not much higher than 40s/30s. Bundle up,
expect cold nights ahead especially mid to late next week; possibly
nearing a few record lows mid to late week.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 2:57 PM PST Saturday...Its been a sunny and
pleasant Saturday afternoon across the Bay Area but change is
literally on the horizon. Low clouds offshore will likely
reorganize and deepen overnight into Sunday morning in advance of
the incoming cold front. Breezy and cooler Sunday with more clouds
and persistent nw winds off the ocean keeping clammy highs in the
upper 50s near the coast with only lower 60s inland.

Monday will feel dramatically cooler all locations, especially in
the hills and inland areas as a dry cold front passes through the
region. There could be some localized drizzle/sprinkles along the
coast as the initial boundary squeezes out some moisture but the
main frontal passage will be dry and usher in a much colder
airmass. Daytime highs in the 50s all locations on Monday, even
inland with only 40s in the hills as strong cold advection kicks
in with this shortwave with origins from the Gulf of Alaska and
western Canada.

Things get interesting on Tuesday as a secondary shortwave pivots
over the region and rotates just far enough westward to briefly
get an over-water trajectory. The limiting factor will be moisture
but steep lapse rates will allow for showers to develop. 850 mb
temps easily fall from -4 to almost -6 celsius on Tuesday in
highly convective/unstable environment. Up at 700 mb, temps will
be -14 to -16 celsius, ideal for dendritic ice crystal growth.

925 mb temps somewhere at or just above zero suggests snow levels
easily down to around 2000 feet and in this steep lapse rate
environment likely down to around 1000 feet in heavier showers.
Small hail or graupel reports will likely occur on Tuesday and
high spots along Highway 35 and 9 in the Santa Cruz mountains
could see snow, even possibly the summit of Highway 17. High 29 in
northern Napa will be cold enough but not sure about shower
potential up there in this pattern. Rainfall amounts to be on the
light side in the moisture starved system with amounts 0.10 or
less on average but locally 0.25 in heavier convective showers,
especially Santa Cruz mtns and Santa Lucia range. Locally the
higher terrain of Los Padres NF in Monterey county could see a few
inches of snow, especially if northwest flow-Monterey Bay feeder
effect stays in place through Weds am.

Weds morning will be a cold morning for the Bay Area as skies
clear out. Breezy winds in the boundary layer and lingering
clouds will keep temps from really falling off a cliff. Continued
unseasonably cool on Weds with highs only low to mid 50s with mid
40s in the hills.

Weds night into Thursday morning should be the coldest morning
under clear skies and light winds. Upper 20s possible for the
North Bay valleys with 30s most elsewhere. A long enough stretch
of cool days and cold nights to stress those without adequate
shelter. In addition now is the time to plan for pets, plants and
pipes.

Warming trend starts Thursday afternoon into Friday with dry and
mild weather.

Looks like ridging for next weekend but still some signs pointing
to better rain chances as we get into early March.

.AVIATION...As of 3:35 PM PST Saturday...For the 00z TAFs. VFR
for the remainder of the day today. Around 5-10 kt onshore winds
before they diminish overnight. Winds are breezier near coastal
terminals and in the Salinas Valley. Chance for patchy low clouds
tonight with guidance showing stratus intrusion inland. Confidence
on exact location and intensity (i.e. flight category) is low to
moderate at this time, with higher confidence for coastal
terminals to see patchy low clouds. On Sunday afternoon, NW winds
will increase to around 10 to 20 kts (breezier near the coast).

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR today. Breezy onshore winds around 10-12
kts this afternoon/evening. Moderate confidence of patchy low
clouds overnight Saturday into Sunday morning. Cloudy and windy
conditions with gusts of 25 to 30 kts possible Sunday afternoon
into evening.

KSFO Bridge Approach...Depending if fog develops in the Bay, could
impact visuals for approach.

Monterey Bay...VFR today. Generally light winds except through the
Salinas Valley with breezy NW winds around 10-15 kts. Patchy low
clouds near KSNS/KMRY tonight through Sunday morning, bringing
intermittent periods of VFR to IFR/LIFR cigs. Breezy NW winds
Sunday afternoon.

.MARINE...as of 02:10 PM PST Saturday...Light northerly winds will
continue through this morning, but  will strengthen to become
breezy across the waters this afternoon  and gusty overnight into
Sunday. Gale force wind gusts and very  steep wind waves at 10 to
11 seconds are expected in the waters  between late Sunday and
Monday. Otherwise, a long period northwest swell will gradually
diminish through the weekend as the steep  wind waves build.
