What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS San Francisco Bay Area, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale warning went out at Jul 15, 11:10 PM PDT, 3 hours 42 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jul 15, 11:10 PM PDT, 3 hours 42 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area
1110 PM PDT Fri Jul 15 2022

.SYNOPSIS...Expect additional warming on Saturday with a drying
trend, especially for higher terrain. A weak cold front approaches
on Sunday to start the next gradual cooling trend for the Bay
Area and the Central Coast. No significant swings in temperatures
expected next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 10:00 PM PDT Friday...As is typical of July
there was a sharp contrast in temperatures from coastside/bayside
to inland today; average temperatures were near to slightly below
the 30 year normals. July's high sun angle produces a maximum
warming that is strongest inland far from maritime influence of
the afternoon and evening sea breezes. Temperatures were coolest
at the coast and the bays with highs in the 60s/70s/lower 80s to
the 90s interior North Bay, East Bay and South Bay, interior
Monterey and San Benito Counties reached the 90s to 100F to 105F.

An amplifying 500 mb ridge will remain located over the cwa tonight
and Saturday, the ridge extends from a large high pressure system
centered near the Four Corners. Large scale sinking air (subsidence)
coupled to diurnal surface warming will propel daytime temperatures
upward again Saturday with a few degrees Fahrenheit of warming over
far inland locations compared to today, hottest spots again approaching
105F. Simultaneously entrenched also is the onshore pressure
gradient and wind, offering refreshing sea breezes closest to the
coast and bays. The SFO-SAC pressure gradient will approach 4 mb
again late Saturday afternoon. Monsoon moisture over the Desert
Southwest will overlap the Sierra Nevada through the weekend. Mid-
high level clouds may sweep across our cwa from the south over the
weekend, with the NAM a bit of an outlier model showing some mid
level instability reaching southern Monterey and San Benito
Counties late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Otherwise global
model forecasts are not showing as much mid level instability as
the NAM, something to watch, but for now it does not appear very
favorable for convection. The marine layer remains compressed
during the weekend with night and morning coastal stratus and fog.

Only update this evening was to adjust forecast high temperatures for
Saturday downward a couple to a few degrees in the Salinas Valley with
the expectation that the afternoon and evening sea breeze will redevelop.

&&

.AVIATION...as of 11:10 PM PDT Friday...For the 06Z TAFs. Marine
stratus blankets the coastal waters and has penetrated through the
Golden Gate, bringing MVFR Cig to KOAK, while the rest of SF Bay
Area terminals remain VFR. Stratus also covers the Monterey
Peninsula and southern parts of the bay coast. The marine layer
remains compressed at just over 1000 ft deep, which will limit
inland penetration of stratus overnight. Models still projecting
stratus impacts for much of northern SF Bay into the Delta, and
around Monterey Bay with IFR/LIFR level Cigs likely - lowest for
coastal terminals. There will also be the potential for mist and
patchy fog overnight. Widespread VFR returns in the mid to late
morning with breezy to locally gusty afternoon winds.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR at the terminal with FEW low clouds
reported. Stratus is filling in through the Golden Gate but not
wrapping around the bay at this moment. Cigs not expected in the
near term but will be possible towards the early morning hours.
Tempo IFR Cig included in TAF in this time frame, with only low
confidence. Clouds clear towards mid-morning with VFR prevailing
through the day. Another round of fairly gusty westerly winds
in the afternoon/evening with gusts reaching up to 30 kt. Another
stratus intrusion through the Golden Gate at night, with potential
impacts to the terminal.

KSFO Bridge Approach...Clear over the approach through the night
with possible FEW/SCT in the early to mid- morning hours.

Monterey Bay...IFR/LIFR Cigs around southern coastal bay terminals
and over KSNS, expanding in coverage tonight. Patchy fog and mist
also impacting the terminals into the early morning. Expect a
return to VFR in the late morning with westerly winds becoming
moderate to breezy into Saturday afternoon.

&&

.BEACHES...as of 8:20 PM PDT Friday...The San Francisco Golden
Gate tidal prediction is still expected around high tide around
6.66 feet at 1:25 AM PDT Saturday morning. Despite the fact that
the tides heights are diminishing, coastal flooding is still a
risk. This potential is greatest for vulnerable, low-lying,
portions of the San Francisco bayshore which typically experience
King Tide flooding. Another Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued
for areas along the San Francisco Bay Shoreline for early
Saturday morning. While it is expected that this advisory could
potentially be the last of the advisories for this round of King
Tides, it will be re-evaluated Saturday morning. Lastly, keep in
mind that these high tides will occur overnight in the early
morning hours. Drive with caution on any bayshore roads as it may
be difficult to see if low-lying areas have water on them in the
dark.

&&

.MARINE...as of 8:39 PM PDT Friday...Expect the hazardous, wind-
driven seas to continue generating steep waves up to 8 to 10 feet
in the outer waters. Gale force gusts continue along the Big Sur
coast south of Point Sur until the early morning. These breezy NW
winds and steep hazardous seas will likely continue into the next
work week, along with a pair of weak, longer period S to SW swell.
