.DISCUSSION...as of 09:08 PM PDT Thursday...
Currently seeing increasing high clouds come through as a trough
moves into the area. Cooling trend continues as temperatures across
the region are again 10 to 15 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. The
00z Oakland sounding depicts a backing wind profile, indicating that
cold air is indeed settling into the area. West/southwest surface
winds have been breezy across the area this evening with reports of
gusts around 20 to 30 mph. With the trough axis entering our area
tomorrow afternoon, expect Friday to be cool again with highs on
track to be in the low to mid 70s in the interior and upper 60s near
the coast. Once the trough exits the area by Sunday, a warming trend
is forecast to begin early next with higher pressure building in.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 12:49 PM PDT Thursday...Skies are mostly
sunny but advertised cooling trend is underway this afternoon with
continued breezy onshore winds across the region. So far gusts in
the 20-30 mph range across the North and East Bay hills as well
as around SF Bay with gusts in excess of 40 mph over the Altamont
Pass. Temps running cooler mainly upper 60s to upper 70s with 80s
confined to the far East Bay and interior Central Coast.
Unusually deep and cold upper trough will make a beeline towards
the North Bay by Friday afternoon. The main impact will be
continued cooling with highs only upper 60s to low/mid 70s even
for the interior valleys. The steep lapse rates suggest there will
be plenty of instability but moisture looks to be the limiting
factor for any convection across our region. Some instability
clouds over the higher terrain of the North Bay looks to be the
best bet at this time with any convection over interior Mendocino
and western Glenn/Tehama counties.
Looking ahead to Saturday the upper low will still be over the
region with continued below normal temperatures, though Saturday
looks to be a few degrees warmer than Friday with highs at least
it the mid 70s Saturday afternoon. As the trough axis begins to
shift eastward and cold advection eases, onshore winds will be
lighter Saturday afternoon.
Behind the trough ridging takes hold as another round of dry
northerly flow will bring favorable downslope warming and drying.
Temperatures near normal Sunday will warm to well above normal by
Tuesday with mid 90s likely once again for the interior valleys
as 595 dm ridge over the East Pac ridges eastward with favorable
pressure gradient for continued northerly flow. The overall active
pattern will keep seasonal coastal stratus production in check
even with the cold SST in place. Fuels will continue to dry out
and without the nighttime marine layer the afternoon onshore
winds will be conducive for fast moving grass fires.

.AVIATION...as of 11:24 PM PDT Thursday...For the 06Z TAFs. Breezy
to gusty conditions linger into the late night with particularly
strong winds around the SF Bay. LLWS is a concern into the late
night around the SF Bay and Monterey Bay as winds aloft stay
strong. Cloud cover will offer inconsistent moments of MVFR around
the Monterey Bay and LVK into the late night, before VFR returns
at LVK and MVFR becomes prevailing around the Monterey Bay. High
clouds will slowly pass through the area through the night.
Widespread VFR is expect to return in the mid morning with a
breezy afternoon to follow.
Vicinity of KSFO... VFR through the TAF period. Gusty westerly winds
linger into the late night, before seeing some reduction. Winds
become light to moderate in the early morning, but increase in the
late morning, leading to a breezy to gusty afternoon.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay...Becoming MVFR as CIGs develop through the night.
Expect moderate to breezy winds through much of the night and some
LLWS concerns over SNS as winds aloft continue to be strong. Expect
winds aloft and at the surface to weaken into the mid morning as VFR
returns. Breezy winds are expected to return around noon.

.MARINE...as of 09:08 PM PDT Thursday...Breezy to locally gusty
northwest winds persisting across the waters tonight, with the
strongest winds expected along the immediate coast, especially
from Point Sur southward where gale force winds are expected.
Near gale-force gusts are also possible south of Pigeon Point and
into the northwestern Monterey Bay this evening. Steep wind driven
seas at 7 to 9 seconds will persist across the waters today but
ease with the winds Friday.
