.SYNOPSIS...An upper level trough on Monday will return
temperatures to seasonal normals and provide breezier onshore
winds. By Tuesday, winds return to the north as the next warming
trend begins, gradually stepping temperatures up leading into next
weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:02 PM PST Sunday...This afternoon was the
last in the trend of record-breaking warmth. Another 3 daily
record maximum temperatures were broken. SJC, Gilroy, and King
City were the record-breakers, while SFO tied its daily record.
The evening began to show the first signs of the pattern change. Low
clouds and fog have begun to move inland as onshore flow is starting
to take hold. This will lead to a cloudy night for most areas with
patchy fog forming in several areas. Because of this, overnight
temperatures will be slow decrease into the night. Expect the cloudy
and foggy conditions to last into the mid to late morning.
Monday will be quite the change of pace with scattered higher
clouds, breezy to gusty winds, and much cooler temperatures.
Afternoon highs will be 10-15 degrees cooler than today.

Today and Tonight:
Ridging aloft will persist for one more day before flattening
equatorward in response to shortwave troughing moving onshore later
tonight. With subsequent weakening of surface high pressure to our
north look for the pressure gradient to relax. Weaker synoptic flow
will bring light breezes this afternoon, with an onshore wind
component developing along the coast. This should allow low stratus
lurking offshore to ooze into coastal areas by evening, before
reaching favorable valley locations overnight. Given the
compressed saturation within the surface layer fog development is
possible, particularly along the coastal bays tonight. This will
be our last warm day, with readings again climbing into the 70s
and 80s in the warmer inland valleys. Reading along the coast
should be more tempered given the calm to light onshore winds, but
places like MRY may have a shot at climbing decently before the
winds turn onshore. Lows tonight should be warmest along the coast
given cloud cover (~50 degrees) and cooler for the inland valleys
(~40-45).
Monday and Tuesday:
A strong shortwave trough will drop southeast from the Pacific
Northwest through the western Great Basin. The accompanying surface
low and better moisture should remain to our east, keeping rain
chances away from our area. Onshore flow should ensue bringing
cool and cloudy conditions to most of the area on Monday, with
clouds decreasing away from the coast by Tuesday. Given the near-
saturated boundary layer on Monday can't rule out drizzle or
sprinkles, but no real impact regardless of whether this does or
doesn't occur. Much cooler daytime temperatures are expected with
Highs on Monday mostly in the 60s (some 70s remain possible for
the inland valleys of southern Monterey and San Benito Counties),
with upper 50s to lower 60s area-wide by Tuesday. Overnight lows
will remain seasonal in the mid to upper 30s (inland valleys) to
lower/mid 40s (coast and bayside). Breezy conditions are
anticipated through the period, with initially onshore (N-NW)
winds arriving on Monday before turning more offshore (N-NE) on
Tuesday behind the upper level system. So while humidity will
remain high on Monday it should decline by Tuesday given the
return of drier continental flow. The windier conditions during
this time are expected for the North and East Bay Mountains where
gusts in the 35-45 mph range are possible. Gusts in this range are
also possible at peak-level elsewhere across the area above ~3,000
ft or so. This will bring elevated fire concerns yet again on
Tuesday and continuing through the remainder of the forecast
period.
Wednesday through Saturday:
A light northwesterly flow pattern will evolve aloft as our area
remains along the outer fringe of an amplified ridge over the
eastern Pacific. Winds should gradually ease with time, but
humidity values should remain low with a light offshore component
persisting. Temperatures will slowly moderate with highs creeping
into the mid 60s to lower 70s by late week.
Sunday and Beyond:
A shortwave trough should progress from the northeast Pacific
towards the western Great Basin and CA. There is still a decent
amount of run-to-run variability within the deterministic guidance
regarding the strength and placement of this feature, with only
sporadic ensemble support for precipitation locally. This leads to
low confidence in the forecast details and a continued dry
forecast for now. Otherwise expect slightly cooler temperatures as
cloud cover increases across the area.

.AVIATION...as of 9:38 PM PST Sunday...For the 06Z TAFs. Presently
it's VFR along with coastal stratus and fog /VLIFR-IFR/ under a
gradually deepening marine layer. Lower to mid level thermal and
height ridging continues to weaken tonight and becoming replaced
by a 500 mb trough and rapidly southeastward moving cold front
sweeping across the cwa Monday and Monday night. Post frontal cold
air advection continuing Monday night and Tuesday morning. Based
on surface theta-e the cold front will move through quickly,
upwards to 40-45 mph, and the cold front may indeed sweep up
enough boundary layer moisture and produce a few areas of light
measurable precipitation per recent WRF-ARW, NAM and ECMWF output.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR, light and variable wind this evening. An
increasing chance of IFR ceiling developing tonight and Monday
morning since coastal stratus and fog will move inland in a pre-
cold frontal environment. Steady deep layered cold air advection
will continue to erode the marine temperature inversion Monday and
the inversion will be fully eroded Monday evening. Robust cold air
advection on west to northwest winds Monday evening, night and
Tuesday morning.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...VLIFR-IFR in coastal stratus and fog tonight and
Monday morning lifting to VFR by late morning and afternoon. IFR-
MVFR possible in low clouds Monday evening.

.MARINE...as of 9:22 PM PST Sunday...Northwest winds are forecast
to strengthen rapidly through the day on Monday then remain
strong, with gusts at or near gale force, through midweek. These
strong winds will be accompanied by large, very steep seas in
excess of 10 feet. Additionally, a very long period northwest
swell will arrive between Wednesday and Friday, as the strong
winds and large seas gradually subside.
