.SYNOPSIS...The region will experience dry weather with near to a
a bit above seasonable temperatures through the weekend. By
mid/late next week, models are indicating a strong ridge building
over California which will cause a more pronounced warming trend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:00 PM PDT Thursday...
Quiet weather prevails across the area this evening. The forecast
is in good shape with no changes anticipated.
&&
.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 03:10 PM PDT Thursday...A look at satellite
imagery shows that our low clouds from this morning are now gone
allowing for more sunshine to hit the surface. There remains a
thin layer of high clouds over parts of CA, but that shouldn't
impede our afternoon highs which are forecast to range in the 60s
to low 70s today.
In short, the forecast through Monday shows somewhat seasonable
temperatures with dry weather. Daytime highs will be near
seasonal or up to 10 degrees above average which keeps much of
our area in the realm of the 60s and 70s. For overnight lows, our
region will generally stay in the 40s. Over the weekend, we will
have some ridging over our region which is what will cause some
places to be above average for daytime highs. By Sunday evening, a
weak trough will move through that will nudge down temps and could
bring some breezy conditions our way, but not expecting gusts much
higher than 20-30 mph.
As we get into Tuesday through Thursday, that's when our focus is
on a ridge that will build over California and could cause a
significant warming trend. The ECMWF and GFS deterministic models
are forecasting 850 mb temperatures peaking 16 to 18 degrees C.
When you compare that to sounding climatology provided by SPC, we
see that 18-19 degrees C for that week in April is the maximum
value of 850 mb temps. In further exploration, the ECMWF ensemble
mean for the past 5 runs has indicated that SFO could see peak
temperatures in the upper 60s to mid 70s for next Wednesday and
Thursday. The GFS ensemble mean has shown a similar trend for the
past 5 model runs, although it shows a range in the upper 60s to
low 70s for SFO. In addition the ECMWF EFI (extreme forecast
index) is giving us a heads up that next week could see
anomalously warm temperatures around the Bay Area into Central CA.
If you look at the WPC Cluster Analysis for next week, Clusters 2
and 3 show ridging while Clusters 1 and 4 are either zonal or
have the ridge farther east. Thus the Cluster Total Mean looks
zonal as well. Since not all 4 clusters have a ridge, I did some
tweaking to the daytime highs for Tuesday into Thursday blending
the regular NBM with either the NBM 75 percentile or the NBM 90
percentile to nudge up our forecast, but not completely going with
those higher values. This has resulted in our HeatRisk being in
the yellow (low risk) for next Tues-Thurs which means those
sensitive to heat should take precaution as our highs are forecast
to range in the 80s to low 90s mid/late next week. One thing that
will help us is that overnight lows will help us cool down as
temperatures drop into the mid 40s to low 50s.

.AVIATION...as of 11:06 PM PDT Thursday...For the 06Z TAFs. A mix
of VFR/MVFR as some localized patchy Cigs begin to develop over
coastal and valley terminals. These patchy Cigs are observed on
satellite, as high clouds have mostly cleared out. Some drier air
at the surface has prevented more widespread Cigs from developing,
but will likely see greater low cloud coverage overnight, as
radiational cooling takes effect. General model consensus is for
MVFR/IFR Cigs around Monterey Bay and along the San Mateo coast,
and into the valleys. The picture is less clear around SF Bay
shoreline, with perhaps FEW/SCT clouds and tempo BKN.
Clearing forecast by mid-morning for most terminals, but low
clouds linger into late morning around Monterey Bay and the
immediate coast. Afternoon seabreeze returns Friday. Low clouds
returns Friday night, likely patchy again.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with light onshore winds and mostly clear
skies. Models hint at some low clouds developing over the bay
in 12z-16z time frame, but no strong consensus about Cigs, so TAF
carries SCT012 through the morning. VFR expected Friday with onshore
winds approaching 20 knots.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...VFR/MVFR around the bay, as patchy low clouds
develop around the peninsula and on the windward side of the
coastal mountains. Increasing coverage of Cigs and lowering
overnight to IFR for most area terminals. Clearing should be
earlier on Friday, but still linger between 16Z to 18Z. VFR Friday
afternoon with onshore breezy winds.

.MARINE...as of 8:37 PM PDT Thursday...Winds out of the northwest
remain very strong and continuing to generate very large, steep
wind waves. These waves have combined with a WNW swell to make for
hazardous seas. They range from roughly 9 to 14 feet at every 10
to 13 seconds. Seas will diminish slightly through the end of the
week but will remain hazardous.
