Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Missoula MT 954 AM MST Tue Nov 8 2022 .UPDATE...Wind Chill and Winter Weather Advisories have been cancelled. && .AVIATION...Northerly and easterly winds remain in many of the valleys of northwest Montana, due to a lingering pressure gradient, which will remain through today. Satellite loops are showing stratus in much of western Montana with lowered ceilings and obscured terrain. Model soundings show the stratus remaining for most of the day. An area of snow from Lemhi County through southwest Montana is also causing lowered visibility. The HREF shows snow decreasing from south to north today with snow around Butte and along the Divide to linger at least into the afternoon. A low pressure system tonight will expand snow south to north through Wednesday morning. Widespread snow is expected south of I-90. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 344 AM MST Tue Nov 8 2022/ DISCUSSION...An area of snow remains from southern Lemhi County Idaho through southwest Montana. Gilmore Summit and Homestake Pass have had consistent snow with accumulations on the roadway. Butte is also experiencing periods of accumulating snow. Radar projections show the snow ending from south to north during this morning, but disagree on how long snow will linger in the Butte/Blackfoot Region. Most of the radar projections have snow ending during the afternoon, but low level moisture is forecast to remain so snow may linger even longer. Wind chill readings are cold and below zero along the Divide and in portions of northwest Montana. Please make sure to be prepared for the cold if needing to be outdoors or traveling over mountain passes. Model guidance agrees that a low pressure center will approach the region tonight. While there is good agreement on the path of the surface low, the mid-level low, that will be a bigger influence on the snow in central Idaho through west-central Montana, has more uncertainty. Despite the uncertainty in the mid level low track, confidence is high that a broad area of snow will associate with the low, and the HREF ensemble mean shows Lake County and southern Flathead County being the northern extent of the snow. The southern half of the Bitterroot Valley continues to be a focus area for snow with the NBM 4.0 showing a 40-50 percent probability of greater than 4 inches of snow by 5 pm Wednesday. Impacts from higher snow rates of 1 inch per hour are also possible (20-30 percent probability) from Grangeville, northeast through the Bitterroot Valley, and I-90/Highway 200 east of Missoula. Our current forecast shows show quickly ending this evening, but it is common for snow to linger longer with these types of lows. Deterministic models are starting to show lingering snow, so we may need to increase precipitation chances for Wednesday night. Model clusters show the trough moving off to the east during Thursday. A light northerly flow during the end of the week is a weather pattern notorious for causing lowered cloud cover in the valleys, so depending on the timing of the clouds, either the low temperatures won't be as cold in some valleys or high temperatures will struggle to warm.
