Forecast mostly on track today with no big changes. Only minor
change was to add in more cloud cover from I-40 and southward over
the next few hours due to recent satellite trends. These clouds
should thin out during the afternoon hours. If they don't however,
then forecast max temps will end up being a few degrees too high
for those areas.

.SHORT TERM...
(Today and tonight)

Key Messages:

1. Today will remain dry with chances for rain returning later
tonight. Brief periods of freezing rain are possible along the ridge
tops of far eastern portions of the region with no impacts expected
in our area.

2. Temperatures will remain near normal with rain chances continuing
through Thursday before the extreme cold arrives.

Today and Tonight

Currently early this morning, quasi-zonal flow is in place aloft
with a weak shortwave moving off to the east. This comes ahead of a
strong 150+ kt jet and extreme cold air via Siberian high pressure
behind a surface frontal boundary. This setup will continue through
the day, leading to a continuation of dry and seasonal conditions.
Heading into tonight, a downstream jet streak of 120+ kts will
traverse to our north, leading to increased upper divergence and
southerly flow via direct ageostrophic circulation. The upward
vertical motion and MSLP falls towards our southeast will all be
sufficient for a return of PoPs focused on eastern portions of the
region. Overall, moisture will be fairly shallow with surface
temperatures close to the freezing mark along the eastern periphery.
With the expectation of 30 to 40+ kts of southeasterly 850mb flow,
downsloping in our region and upsloping to the east will likely keep
the concern for icing in those areas on early Thursday morning. A
light glaze definitely can't be ruled out along those highest ridge
tops up against the North Carolina border and further into Virginia.
However, the notable downsloping and synoptic WAA will likely keep
icing potential at bay in our region. With the fairly weak MSLP
gradient along the mountains, mountain wave enhancement is not
anticipated with isolated gusts to advisory criteria possible.

Thursday

Heading into Thursday, the aforementioned upstream jet will
strengthen to near 200 kts with longwave troughing digging far south
into the central U.S. This will also be accompanied by cyclogenesis
over the Southern Plains with the resulting surface low intensely
deepening as it moves towards the Great Lakes. These features will
be the main focus in the extended period with continued ascent via
isentropic lift, MSLP falls, and upper divergence keeping PoPs in
the forecast through the day. The overall trend will be an increase
of PoPs from the west ahead of the strong cold front separating the
seasonal air mass from the long-anticipated arctic air mass.

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday through Tuesday)

Key Messages:

1. Extreme cold that has not been seen in this area for decades
will build into the area on Thursday night and continue through
Saturday.

2. Expected impacts from this extreme event will be gusty winds
that may cause power outages, potentially hazardous road
conditions from snow/ice, and dangerous wind chills.

The arrival of an extremely cold air mass continues to be the big
story for this period. From 00Z Fri to 12Z Fri, most of the area
will see around a 30-40 degree drop in temperatures. The cold
front will move through quickly, from around midnight to 4 AM, and
dry air aloft builds in a few hours after surface fropa. So there
will only be a small window when there will be potential for snow
accumulation, which appears to be from 06Z to 12Z. For the most
part, the SREF and NBM members have mostly settled on snow
amounts from about a quarter inch to one inch for the Valley, with
up to 2 inches in the higher elevations and SW VA, and the
forecast amounts will fall in this range. Outside of some light
snow showers or flurries adding a tenth or so in the mountains and
SW VA, accumulating snowfall will mostly end by 12Z. As we have
been emphasizing the past few days, despite the light snow
amounts, travel in the area may be impacted by the rapid drop in
temperatures causing any moisture on roads to quickly freeze. Icy
road conditions may persist through Friday and potentially through
Saturday as well, since max temperatures will be in the teens and
20s.

With the frontal passage will come a sharp increase in winds, with
sustained winds expected to be in the 15-30 mph range with gusts
in the 40s, and near 50 mph in the mountains. A concern with these
winds will be the potential for downed trees and power lines
leading to power outages when temperatures will be getting
extremely cold. Wind chill values on Friday will be below zero
for the entire area through Friday and Friday night, and -15 to
-25 in the mountains, Cumberland Plateau, and SW VA. Therefore, a
Wind Chill Watch will be issued for the entire area from 09Z Fri
through 18Z Sat. The TN Valley may end up in a Wind Chill
Advisory, but at this point, will have a blanket Watch and let
later shifts divide it by topography for an Advisory/Warning.

Bottom line, this will be an impactful, extreme cold event that
has not been seen in this area for decades.

The rest of the forecast period will be dry with a gradual warming
trend.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of southwest North
Carolina...east Tennessee and southwest Virginia.

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Extreme cold that has not been seen in this area for decades will
build into the area on Thursday night. As the temperature drops
rapidly after midnight, rain will change to snow, with light
accumulations expected before sunrise on Friday. Although snow
amounts may be light, the quick drop in temperatures may lead to
rapid freezing of any moisture on roads.

Winds will be strong and gusty behind the cold front, and
dangerous wind chill values are expected in the mountains early
Friday morning through Saturday morning. The strong winds may
cause downed trees and power lines, leading to power outages when
temperatures will be getting extremely cold. Wind chills as low as
15 below zero are possible in lower elevations, and as low as 25
below zero in higher elevations. A Wind Chill Watch has been
issued for the entire area from 4 AM EST Friday through 1 PM EST
Saturday.
