Bumped temps up 2 to 3 degrees in most places for the overnight
period. Some clearing is still expected after midnight but some
clouds are now expected to linger throughout the night. Confidence
on fog is low with drier air moving in from the north overnight.
The best chance for fog will be near Tri-Cities in the early
morning hours.

Key Messages:

1. Potential for fog tonight, possibly dense in some locations.

2. Mild temperatures continue for Saturday.

Discussion:

A weak front is pushing into our area from the north, identified
mainly by a wind shift and a weak dewpoint gradient. As the front
pushes south, we should see decreasing cloud cover from north to
south through the evening hours. The partial clearing and building
high pressure behind the front should create conditions favorable
for fog development tonight, especially in areas that had
measurable rainfall today. It could be dense in some spots, but
since there is some uncertainty about how quickly and how much
clouds clear out. Will not issue an Advisory at this time.

Tomorrow, a ridge axis will be building overhead, and a surface
high will be over the central Appalachians. This will keep mild
temperatures in place, with highs in the 60s for the Valley. Late
in the day, clouds will increase as the ridge axis moves east and
isentropic lift develops ahead of the approaching low pressure
system. Any rain chance should hold off until after 00Z Sunday.

Key Messages:

1. Incoming system late Saturday night into Sunday could produce a
mountain wave wind event. Gusty winds expected in the TN Valley.

2. Storm system slated for Tue night and Wed next week as it could
produce some strong storms and heavy rain.

Discussion:

The closed low over east Texas will begin lifting northeast at the
start of the period. The associated surface low progged to deepen
across Arkansas/Missouri. As a consequence the surface pressure
gradient across the Smoky Mountains will really tighten. This will
likely set up strong wind gusts in excess of 55 mph in the mountains
and adjacent foothills. Some lower elevation wind gusts near mid-day
could surpass 30 mph at times. The windy conditions will coincide
with the heavier rainfall. A few rumbles of thunder will also be
possible generally south of I-40. Rainfall totals will be highest
across the southern portions of the forecast area near Chattanooga
near three quarters of an inch to the lowest across southwest
Virginia where they should see a little over three tenths.

Rainfall is expected to end fairly quickly on Sunday however another
trailing shortwave could produce some light rain mainly across the
northern areas of the forecast area early Monday.

Another broad upper trough will approach the region Tuesday. Ahead
of a cold front stretching from the Great Lakes to southern
Oklahoma, abundant moisture along with showers and thunderstorms
will develop well ahead of it. Instability looks like it will be
confined farther west and south on Tuesday night into Wednesday.
However, locally heavy rainfall will be possible. The frontal
boundary will push through the area late Wednesday and take the
majority of precipitation with it. Daytime temperatures on Thursday
will be about 10-15 degrees cooler than Wednesday. Rainfall totals
from this system will range from just over 2 inches across the south
to near one inch across parts of southwest Virginia. Surface high
pressure builds in and mostly dry conditions persist through at
least Friday. Longer range models diverge on what exactly late next
week looks like. The NBM is generating some lower end precipitation
chances. We will be watching for upcoming changes toward the end of
the week in coming forecasts.

tonight. Low clouds have dissipated, but high level clouds look
like they'll remain FEW/SCT most of the night... Making fog

there is a possibility of them dropping a bit lower before
sunrise.
