Upper air pattern consists of a deep 500 mb trough over the northern
central U.S. and a trough in the Pacific NW. The Pacific NW trough
moves east into the Northern Plains by 00z Sat. Lake effect will
continue to slowly wind down as the wind backs to the southwest and
pushes the bands back offshore by this evening. This is covered in
the going forecast. One big question for tonight is wind chill
values and if an advisory or warning is needed. The cold
temperatures will certainly be there, but the wind might not be.
Thinking is right now, if the wind is not there, the cold
temperatures will make it hit advisory criteria at least. If the
wind stays up, the temperatures will be warmer, but would still hit
criteria. Will go with a wind chill advisory for now for most of the
western half of upper Michigan and have it from 02z-16z Fri.

Ridging aloft will continue to strengthen over the Upper Midwest on
Friday with surface high pressure covering much of the Great Lakes
Region and northeast U.S. This synoptic pattern will result in
continued southwest flow at the surface after several days in a
north/northwest flow. So, expect a brief break from both the
synoptic and LES on Friday. After a bitter cold morning Friday with
temperatures as low as -20 to -25 over the interior west, 850 mb
temperatures will start to rebound a bit. Look for daytime highs to
slowly climb back into the teens on Friday with some sunshine and
even into the low 20s across much of the UP by Saturday. The
exception will be the interior west where highs will top off in
the upper teens.
Along with the weak warmup though will come more snow chances
starting Friday night with the next Clipper system and associated
cold front. Best upper forcing is progged to enter the western
counties early Friday night, tracking across the UP through the
night and exiting the eastern counties by daybreak Saturday.
Previous operational models/ensemble means were trending toward
minimal snow amounts, but latest runs have now trended upward a bit
with some 1 to 2 inch totals along the lakeshore and over eastern
counties. Plus, the NW wind LES belts could pick up an additional
quick 1 to 3 inches on the backside through Saturday night.
Further out, temperatures will quickly drop to below zero again
Satuday night in the colder airmass behind the aforementioned
cold front where they'll mostly stay through the end of the
extended period. Interior west portions could even plummet as far
