Colder air is continuing to advect across Lake Superior into Upper
Michigan this morning as LES remains ongoing in the WNW wind snow
belts. Otherwise, outside of these belts, skies are generally clear
with light winds continuing thanks to CAA keeping the boundary layer
mixed. Temps across Upper Michigan remain in the single digits above
zero across the west with low double digits above zero across the
east. As a weak ridge of high pressure moves over northern MN, winds
are backing more to the SW and becoming lighter, current temps there
are in the single digits blo zero. As the night goes on, expecting
some of those cooler temps to impact the western portions of Upper
Michigan, with temps falling into the single digits blo zero.

For today, a weak sfc ridge will move across the UP as winds
decrease and back to the SW. As this ridge moves over, weak WAA will
start to move in across the UP in the evening, as a weak shrtwv
passes over in the late aftn. With the colder air that moved in
overnight, deeper mixing should allow aftn clouds and even a few
flurries across the western half of Upper Michigan...otherwise it
looks generally benign with temps in the upper teens to low 20s.

Another shrtwv and approaching cold front is then expected late
tonight. Ahead of that cold front, winds will increase from the S,
with blustery conditions developing by Friday morning across the
west and north central. Winds downsloping into Superior across
Marquette County could see some gusts in the mid 20mph range by
sunrise. With the increase in winds, lows tonight will most likely
occur earlier on in the night, especially across the west half where
temps will start to increase after midnight.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Models advertise a fairly active pattern for late this week into
next week with at least two more Clipper systems moving through the
Upper Great Lakes Friday and Sunday and possibly a couple more
Pacific-based systems impacting the area for the early to middle
part of next week as flow deamplifies and becomes quasi-zonal.
The Clipper systems will bring shots of mainly light system snow
to the area, followed by generally light nw-flow LES behind them.
As the amplified ridge over the west coast of North America
deamplifies by early next week and slowly translates east toward
the central CONUS and Great Lakes region this will result in temps
rebounding from well blo normal readings late this week to near
or above normal readings by the early to middle part of next week.

Friday, models still consistent showing a lobe of the polar vortex
tracking overhead mainly in the afternoon and evening when x-
sections show the tropopause falling below 500 mb. Models indicate a
band of light system snow along the system's cold front with nw flow
LES behind the front Fri afternoon into Saturday morning as 850 mb
temps fall to around -24C by 12Z Sat. Fcst soundings suggest the
potential for some briefly moderate LES over east half portions of
the U.P. Fri night as moisture within the CBL reaches as high as 7
kft and deeper mixing could allow for blustery NNW winds to gust as
high as 30-35 mph, so bumped up PoPs accordingly and have a mention
of lowered visibility in snow and blowing snow in the HWO.

NW flow LES should taper off fairly quickly Sat afternoon as ridging
moves in from the west and a period of generally drier conditions
follows into Sat evening. This brief drier period will be followed
by another weak Clipper system moving through on Sunday bringing
another shot of light system snow into the area late Sat night into
Sunday and some light nw flow LES behind the Clipper into Sun night.
Not expecting much more than an inch or two of snow accumulation
from this system.

Model uncertainty increases into the Monday-Thursday time frame as
operational models continue to waver on timing/track of Pacific-
rooted shortwaves moving across the region. Consensus of 00Z
deterministic models and ensemble means would seem to support a
better chance of pcpn on Monday (mainly in the form of snow) with
drier conditions for Tuesday into Thursday. Temps should be trending
above normal especially by the middle of next week in a developing
WAA regime as broad mid-upper level ridging over the western CONUS
builds east into the western Great Lakes region. NBM guidance is
generally forecasting high temps in the upper 30s north to lower to
mid 40s south for Wednesday and Thursday.

VFR will be the prevailing flight category at KIWD and KSAW for
duration of TAF period with drier air in place.  Some lingering snow
showers in the westerly flow will linger at KCMX.  So, will carry a
TEMPO into this morning to account for MVFR visibility restrictions.
  Winds have tapered off at all TAF sites, but they will remain
strong at KCMX out of the west, eventually backing to the
southwest. Sustained wind speeds will hold in the 12 to 15 kt
range through mid morning with gusts up to 24 kts.

CAA is bringing WNW winds to around 30 knots this morning, but will
begin to back further to the W and then SW today, decreasing into
the mid 20 knots range. Ahead of an approaching cold front tonight,
SW winds will increase to 30 knots, with some increasing stability
due to warmer air aloft. With 40 to 45 knot winds remaining roughly
2kft above the water surface, a gale force gusts are expected at
time, especially at the higher observation platforms. The strong
cold front will pass over the lake Friday, with W to NW gales to 40
knots expected Friday aftn and evening. Friday night into Saturday,
a ridge of high pressure will move across the western half of the
lake as winds decrease into the mid 20 knot range across the west
and up to 30 knots across the east. Winds remain generally light,
around 20 knots or so on Sunday.

With the stronger winds and colder air, heavy freezing spray is
