Initial upper trough with surface low reflection will move across
the U.P. today into eastern Lake Superior before digging primary
upper low winds up a strong low pressure system over eastern Lake
huron later tonight and Friday. General warm advection ahead of the
trough will yield general 1-3 inch snowfall amounts per 6 hour time
period for most. Southerly winds off Lake Michigan should provide a
little additional enhancement into parts of eastern Menominee,
Delta, and eastern Marquette counties. As winds turn northwesterly
behind the trough through the afternoon across the west...while
upper forcing will begin to wane, 85H temperatures around -15 C over
the western Lake should begin to increase the lake effect component.
Overall snow totals during the day today should general fall in the
2-5 inch range for most with an additional 1-3 inches this evening
through midnight. Based on these amounts and winds not increasing
until after 06Z will extend Winter Weather Advisory for entire area
through then.
With the surface through bisecting the forecast area
today...continued low level warm advection over the east should
boost surface temperatures close to freezing for a time. As
northwesterly cold advection flow kick in on the back side of the
trough over the west...highs will primarily be in the teens.

The advertised winter storm will be at particularly impactful
intensity starting Thursday night into Friday as a deep 500 mb
trough negatively tilts as it swings around the southern basin of
Lake Michigan. This will support a surface low pressure passing
through the Michigan Lower Peninsula into southern Ontario, though
models disagree exactly how this passage will occur. The 06Z GEFS
pressure centers mainly take a path through the Great Lakes Bay
Region and over Lake Huron before reaching Ontario while the 00Z EPS
pressure centers prefer a route that skirts the southern Michigan
state line and over Lake Erie before making it to Ontario. Either
way, virtually all model solutions have the mid latitude cyclone
rapidly deepening around 30mb/24hr. This will provide the forcing
for moderate to heavy snowfall over the Upper Peninsula and the
pressure gradient for strong north to northwesterly winds. The winds
are particularly notable as depsite the detail differences noted
above, both the NAEFS and ENS forecast climo-max winds over and
along Lake Superior this weekend.
The snow will be no slouch either, with NBM weekend totals over a
foot for areas along Lake Superior and 8 inches to a foot for the
southern and interior UP. These snow totals are reflective of lake
enhancement of system snow to start the event transitioning to pure
lake effect further into the weekend. Strong cold advection from N
and NW winds aloft will drive 850mb temps into the negative teens
and 20s C while the lake surface is still in the single digits C.
Whether the winds are more Nerly or NWerly will have a significant
impact on any given area's snow totals especially thanks to the
differing lake fetch. Snow totals could also be highly variable
dependent on the observed snow/liquid ratios, which are going to be
a tug-of-war between a deep dendritic growth zone depicted in
soundings and the fracturing of dendrites as they fall from extreme
winds. Will likely stick with a happy medium of the lower teens:1
ratio but observations of the ratio might be key to the
nowcasts/live messaging as the event unfolds.
Regardless of snow total, the biggest concern is going to be
blizzard conditions, which are expected as persistently strong winds
are expected to drive visibilities very low, making travel difficult
to impossible this holiday weekend. Partners with lakeshore flooding
concerns will also have to be alert from the Keweenaw Peninsula and
east this weekend as waves peak overnight from 15-20 feet with
occasional waves up to 25 feet possible along Alger County.
Conditions begin to improve on Christmas as most snow chances in the
west diminish by Sunday morning and in the east by the evening, with
winds gradually reducing in that same time period. Beyond Christmas,
model solutions differ, however they mostly agree on the pattern
remaining active with various shortwaves passing through the Upper
Great Lakes region next week. A few NBM members and ensemble
clusters show a notable low pressure passing through late in the
week, but details on that will have to wait until after the models
properly resolve the low pressure that's affecting the region this
weekend.

While all three TAF sites experienced a brief period of VFR and MVFR
conditions late in the evening and early this morning at KSAW and
KCMX, conditions will continue to gradually degrade with the
approaching storm system. All three sites should hold at or fall
into IFR conditions this morning, with occasional periods of LIFR at
KIWD and KCMX. Winds stay light at less than 10 knots until the
afternoon, when winds pick up out west. Late afternoon gusts to
around 25 knots and developing lake effect snow showers will produce
LIFR conditions at KIWD and KCMX, with the effects delayed at KSAW
until mid to late evening. Winds only get stronger beyond the
forecast period as a major winter storm settles over the region.

A brief lull in the winds is expected today, though winds over Lake
Superior exceed 20 knots from the south and southwest tonight. A low
pressure passage will rotate the winds to be out of the north and
northwest for the west half of the lake Thursday morning and for all
the lake by Thursday night. Northerly gales will first be observed
in the north central portions of the lake early Friday morning, with
the rest of the lake joining in gales by the late morning hours.
Friday afternoon, the central and eastern portions of the lake
increase to storm force gusts as high as 60 knots starting Friday
night and peaking Saturday morning. Storm conditions persist through
Saturday and decrease back to northwesterly gales Sunday morning,
falling below gales Sunday night, and falling below 20 knots Monday
afternoon. In addition to the winds, strong northerly winds will
usher in cold air and a heavy freezing spray hazard and wind-driven
waves in the eastern half could exceed 20 feet Saturday.
Marine interests with passage plans through Lake Superior Thursday-
Monday should make the appropriate plans now to avoid these
conditions.
