Key Messages:

- Arctic high pressure to bring gusty northwest winds tonight through
  Wednesday, resulting in localized areas of blowing snow across
  western and southern Minnesota.

- Dangerously cold wind chills expected tonight through Thursday

- A pair of weak clipper-type systems may bring minor snow
  accumulations Friday-Saturday and again Sunday-Monday.

A potent cold front is sweeping its way eastward over central MN at
the start of this period, evident on satellite imagery by a swath of
low stratus from northeast MN into west-central MN and also being
shown in the obs as the strong NW winds moving from the Dakotas into
western MN. As the front moves through, much chillier air will spread
across the region, with H85 temps dropping to around -20C. This will
translate to the surface to lows tonight between 0 and -10F.
Combining with NW winds in the 20-30mph range, wind chills over much
of the MN portion of the WFO MPX coverage area will easily reach wind
chill advisory criteria (-25F) late tonight through the first half
of Wednesday. There is also the added concern of blowing snow in
western and southern MN where higher accumulations were recorded from
the recent snow event. With warmer temperatures yesterday and today,
much of the snowpack is expected to have crusted over, resulting in
much less available snow to be blown. While not expecting this issue
to be widespread, the strong winds may be able to overcome some of
it in a localized fashion so have maintained "Patchy Blowing Snow"
wording for much of central-southern MN.

Arctic high pressure will build in from the northwest Wednesday and
slowly move atop the region through Thursday night. Despite ample
sunshine both Wednesday into Thursday, highs will only run several
degrees above and below 0F. Adding in even the slightest of winds of
5mph or greater will push wind chills into advisory criteria.
Confidence is high that additional wind chill advisories will be
needed from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning, it's just a
matter of where, so to avoid confusion with this evening's advisory,
will let tonight's play out then let later shifts tackle the upcoming
necessary advisories. No precipitation is expected throughout the
short-term portion of the forecast, making it just a temperature/wind
forecast.

High pressure will bring a sunny but cold Thursday with highs
ranging from a few degrees below zero in the west to a few degrees
above zero in the east. Winds will be light as the high pressure
slides southeast through the area, but with the arctic air in place
we will still have wind chills as low as -10 to -20 during the
afternoon.

Thursday night lows will bottom out around -10 to -15, but as the
high pressure moves off to the southeast and winds go around to the
south and increase in speed from west to east temperatures will
begin to rise. But, with the increasing winds, a wind chill advisory
will probably be needed for at least the western parts of the
forecast area with wind chills in the -25 to -30 degree range. A
short wave and associated cold front will bring the chance for some
light snow to move from west to east across the area later on Friday
through Friday night. This looks like a high PoP, low QPF type of
event. The NBM shows a good chance of at least a tenth of an inch of
accumulation, but the chance for one inch or more drops to the 20 to
50 percent range, with the best chance of seeing an inch or more in
the northeastern county warning area. The probability of 2 inches or
more drops to zero across most of the area. So while some snow looks
likely, it does not appear to be too significant at this time. Highs
on Friday will range from the lower teens in the east to the lower
20s in the west.

Any snow should be out of the forecast area by Saturday morning with
high pressure moving in behind the cold front for the weekend. There
is considerable spread in the guidance beyond Friday night, but it
looks like high temperatures over the weekend will be mainly in the
teens across the area with lows Sunday morning in the single digits
below zero. Another short wave looks to come at us from the
northwest on Monday, but at this point it does not look very
impactful. However, it looks like another shot of arctic air follows
the passage of this wave.

This is one of those frustrating arctic environments where you have a
moist, but very cold top to the boundary layer. Models tend to
overproduce clouds in this setup, so have kept things a bit more
optimistic than what the LAV has, for instance. Hard to say how
persistent and long lasting stratus over western/central MN will be
tonight, but have it impacting AXN/RWF/STC for much of the night at
the very least. Wind gusts have backed off some, but we will keep
gusty northwest winds through the day on Wednesday.

KMSP...MSP will likely see some brief periods of MVFR cigs as clouds
from central MN drop southeast, but not enough confidence one when
that may occur for a long enough period of time to even drop in a
tempo.
