Latest satellite imagery shows mostly cloudy skies across much of the area, with an area of clearing across south-central MN. Cloud cover will fill in this evening ahead of an approaching system that will impact the area on Tuesday. Temperatures are in the mid 20s to lower 30s with southerly winds that are expected to go light and variable overnight. The primary forecast concern continues to be Tuesday's clipper system and Arctic cold frontal passage. A few light snow showers or flurries are possible across the northeast portion of the MPX CWA. Any accumulations will be light, generally less than an inch. This clipper system drags the Arctic cold front southeast across the area late Tuesday afternoon/evening, with quickly dropping temperatures and gusty northwest winds. There is some potential for blowing snow as winds gust near 40 mph from west central into south central Minnesota Tuesday night, especially around the Alexandria to Morris area. However, much of that area saw above freezing temperatures yesterday/today and again on Tuesday. Without a fresh snowpack, we're left with a partially crusted snowpack which may be difficult for much blowing snow to occur as long as winds stay below 35 mph or so. Neighbors were not thrilled with the potential for widespread, impactful blowing snow event and decided to defer any potential headlines for now. However, during the windiest period Tuesday night it seems at least some patchy drifting and blowing snow will occur so I've left a mention in the forecast for much of the area. Temperatures plummet into the single digits and below zero Tuesday night and wind chill temperatures drop into the -20s to -30F near Alexandria MN. This will likely require a wind chill advisory headline, but opted to defer until there is higher forecast confidence with respect to wind speeds/temps and placement. By Wednesday morning, most of the Upper Midwest will have cleared out, short of some lingering cloud cover over far northern MN and the Great Lakes in the wake of the departing low pressure system. However, cold air advection will be in earnest as the well- advertised arctic intrusion commences for the midweek period. Deep high pressure, to the tune of over 1040mb, over southwestern Canada will drop through the Dakotas and southern MN for Thursday, then shift to the windward edge of the Appalachians by Friday morning. However, despite the clearing skies expected with the high pressure, H85 temps being dragged into the area will drop to the -18C to -22C range across the WFO MPX coverage area Wednesday through Thursday night. Even with plenty of sunshine, will only range several degrees either side of 0F. Lows Wed and Thu night will generally run -10F to -20F. Adding in breezy winds in advance of the incoming high, wind chills will plummet to wind chill advisory criteria for much of the area Wednesday morning through Thursday night. Confidence is high in these cold temps as there is very little variance in the model ensemble spread for both low and high temperatures during the Wednesday thru Thursday night period. Once the high pressure system shifts off to the east, this will be followed by one, possibly two, quick-moving clipper systems for late Friday into early Saturday and possibly also Sunday into Sunday night. At this point, model consensus continues to focus on the Friday-Saturday system with slight-low chance PoPs. With that being the inherited forecast, there's no reason to deviate from that thinking with this forecast. It just becomes a matter of how much moisture is associated with this clipper and where the best dynamics are focused for snowfall with it.
